When man ufactured the metal would io. worth more per n. ton tha the best brands of tone coal iron from other ore. . In expressing the opinion that no more iron would be made at the Mountains and Knob than the present works are capable of producing, I did not mean to convey the impression that the State of Missouri laeLs any of the elements ne cessary for the economical prodtiction of iron . On the contrary, ten years after Iron Mons- lain railroad is constructed to the South line of the State, more charcoal iron will be produced in the South-Eastern counties of Missouri than in any other part of the Union. The "Iron Mountain" is just on the edge of to region abound ing in the most valuable varieties of ore, and more heavily timbered in parts than any portion of Pennsyl, ania.l The specular oxides, the "pipe ore," the vitriety called "needle ore," n doyen 'oriel lee of llematites, exist in exhaustless quantities. These are in the midst of the tim ber region. The veins crop out on ridges, be tween which lie the richest valleys in the world for agricultural purposes. The ridges themselves are covered with pine timber, and when that valuable crop is taken on will he found to hav , the of all others the beat for the production of the grape, which is to he henceforth cue of Nlissoim's great staples. The State Geologist has not yet visited the South-Eastern counties, and that part of the State is a sort of '•terra in cognita" to most of the people, a pleas of sup posed sunken lane's, swamps, agues, and earth quakes—these notions being &make' from the mere margin of the land seen in ascending and descending the Missouri river. Vet South Past ern Missouri has more sources of wealth than any part of the United States I have yet seen. It has the richest.soil, the moat beautiful streams, the finest springs, the stateliest timber, and the greatest variety of mineral productions. if the people of St. Louis have the wisdom to push for ward their railroad to Memphis, all these will anon bo developed, and astonish with the now elements of wealth to be poured into the lap of the great city of the West: There is, however, but little prospect of the early extension of the road which can alone develop this wonderful re gion. Urged on by the specious pretext of be ing made the great Iron City of the West, and the more reasonable hope of becoming the depot of the whole Southern trade North and West of Memphis, and a main point on the direct line which would control nearly the entire travel from Non}, and South, originating to the West ward of Nashville and Louisville. The City of St. Louis and the State of Missouri have been led to the expeuilitui'e of $5,000,000 to construct the road to its present terminus. It will be the means of saving to the dozen individuals com prising the two iron companies et the'Monntain and Knob about $200,000 per annum in the item of transportation, but can be of little practical benefit to the State or the city. The iron seas brought to St. Louis before this expenditure. Most of it, to be sure, went first to l'ittsburgh, to be manufactured, but it is likely to do so still. Much of the means intended to be applied to the prosecution of the road to Memphis, has been consumed, and the energies of the gentlemen who have pushed the work thus far are in a fair way to flag until all their town lots aro sold. Whether the people of St. Louis will wake up and, accomplishing their original object, enjoy the benefits to accrue from a continuation of the road to Memphis; or whether they will suffer it to remain, as now, a grand commemoration of the success of speculators, who have procured for their private benefit this magnificent expend iture, is a question yet to he determined. "Pilot Knob City" is yet only on paper and in the woods at the terminus of the road. The sale is to take place on the 13th prox., and it is confi dently predicted that !legate of lots will amount to not less than a hundred thousand dollars! A few years ago, or even to-day, if the Iron Moun tain railroad were not constructed, this land would probably lie worth twenty dollars per acre. Whatever may bo the present interests of the Knob and Iron Mountain Mining Companies, it is clear that nothing but the extension of the Iron Mountain Railroad will render its stock of any value or enable it to pay the interest on the State and oily bonds. That such au extension would at once pour upon it more traffic than is possessed by any other railroad in the West must be evident to whoever becomes familiar with the country through which it passes, and the relative position of the road as a link on the lines from Mobile, New Orleans, Galveston, Memphis, and Nashville, to the North. Distant as it seems, rittsburgh has a deep interest in the extension of this road and the development of eouth-eastern Missouri Aside from the close relationship with St. Lotus, your very best cus tomer, whose prosperity must surely contribute to you:- own, there is a further consideration. The increased cost and scarcity of wood In Pennsylvania is causing the supply of charcoal Don which is necessary to enable us to retain our eupreuusLy ns the "Iron City," to become lessened every year--our furnaces ono after another are being blown in on Anthracite or bit uminous coal—and from this part of the world we may expect to procure our 'applies, at a fu ton day. In Missouri, charcoal blooms—flu. • railroad being completed to the proper region -. will be produced more cheaply than at.) , alkyl else in the United Staten _ _ In the vicinity of the Iron M0un1114,6 11,1, are many other curiosities to interest the ring or The whole country is a miracle to one accus tomed to the monotony of the geological forma tion el Western Penneylviuga. The pr ncipal one is as large as a good sized house,ay thirty feet in height, and is so poised in r Terence to its ap parent centre of gravity as t seem susceptible of being overturned by a man or two with the aid of a team rail. The Benton monument association should carry 1 .., it to St. Louis and construct f mit a monument to Old Bullion. Nothing coul be more inper sistable or more appropriate t the purpose.
