The white feather, instead of,being regarded as infamouit, is adop ted by them as an ornament, and they march _____ off', boated without a fight, as if such a retreat were something to be proud of. After purcha slug their victory hot fall, net by fair fighting, but by the vilest frauds, it isnot to be wondered that they think cowardice a virtue. Easels the slave that :fights whencheating will serve as well. When P:AOKrII was nominated we heard a great deal from his' - trumpeters about his ability on the stump; hie immense powers to: an orator, • and the certainty of his vanquishing the "Black Republicans . ' by his single might. After Wizarcrr was nominated, end it was given out that he would probably challenge PACKER, the democratic press was mightily tickled at the preposterousness of the idea. WILMOT challenge ' Nesse! Be would never think of such an act of assurance; as well put his head into the lion's ....,„ mouth at once! This was the state of affairs until PACKER. the great orator and statesman, ignominiously fled affrighted from WILMOT, and took refuge. behind the State Committee. The latter was thus compelled to stand up as a shield before him, and put forward a manifesto to the faithful explaining why the challenge was declined.— ' Alas for the expectant democracy! instead ot ' a fight, asunticipated, it was a flight—a base de section of the field to the enemy without strik ing a blow. But they hare got used to it very soon. .EVldently they were not as keen for an enconnteras they pretended, or they would not fall in so generally or so meekly in this inglori• one back down. They hare shouldered their arms promptly for the retreat, and the party presses, Which so lately were looking forward to, the annihilation of Mauer by PACKER on the stump, are now convinced that stump speaking is all wrong, and that the true way to conquer an enemy is to run away from him. Yet, after all, the poor creatures who are com pelled thee to vindicate their weak-kneed candi date are to be pitied. IVhateVer they have to do, no matter how distasteful it may be, they do it, and change their tone and their tactics as submis sively as if they were galley slaves; but ,it is plain that while they submitthey do not like the jibes and jeers to which they are subjected, and that they .march down the bill with much less spirit that they marched up.' Re calculates that the Free State men will be thrown off their guard, and that the Missourians can then come over in any numbers, approve the constitution, and elect another bogus legislature. It looks easy of accomplishment, and we see nu reason to doubt that it will be undertaken with the connivance' and assistance of the general - government. WALKER is undoubtedly co-operating in this arrangement. The dispatches from Kansas published' yesterday, showing that he has framed an infameas apportionment of the territorial legislature, giving the free state counties scarce ly any members and those on the Missoulri border et:tough to control that body, are evi dence that he is part and parcel of the conspira cy to subjnpto Kansas anew. The 11. S. troops, too, are to be stationed at the AIN, so that the Missoutiatis can vote unobstructed and the Free State men be kept back. While Mrs. Cunningham was confined in the T , ..mba on the charge of murdering Dr. Burdell, she sent for Dr. Uhl, her family physician, to attend her. Dr. Uhl, in reply, expressed his inability or unwillingness to attend without a written order from Mr. Ball, the District Attor ney. which he obtained. On waiting upon firs. Cunningham, he was asked to prescribe for symptoms similar to those a person might have who was in the family way: Upon the strength of this remark, Dr. Uhl asked her if she was enciente, to which she remarked, that was a mat ter in which she could not give any information at present; but on speaking with Mrs. Foster on the subject, the latter intimated to Dr. U. dial she understood that such was the case. . After lie discharge of Mrs. Cunningham from prison, she in:firmed fir. Uhl that she was preg nant, and wished him to attend her during her confinement. The doctor said he was willing to du so, on condition that other physicians might assist him, as so much had been said of her, that he thought ouch a precaution advisable. He further suggested the propriety of settling the fact of her pregnancy without delay. lie said that he would be willing to attend her profes sionally for that purpose, in conjunction with two other physicians, whose. names he men tioned. She readily acquiesced, but from that time to i) the present avoided all f ther allusion to the subject. This aroused the actor's suspicions. and he spoke of it to one oft e gentlemen whom be designed to call in to a.,. - t hll , l, and thought it important to' hasten the examinaticr., if the fact was as she 91414..1 The result was that Pr. Uhl placed himself under the direction of the District Attorney, and continued his resits to Mrs. Cunningham.— The District Attorney advised hint to go, and concealing his doubts and sl,picions, learn from Mrs. Cunningham h., full views and arrange ments. Upon another interview Mrs. C. admit ted to him that the approaching confinement was a itunkhg, and offered him $lOOO if he would undertake the job of finding a child and assist ing at the "aceoucAmrnt." Whereupon Dr. Uhl apparently assented, and returning to the Dis trict Attorney reported progress. The District Attorney then laid down the fol- lowing plan of action: Dr. Uhl should concoct a story of a "California widow" tone of his patients) whose husband being away had been indiscreet, and was ready to bring forth a 'ire sponsibility, - for which her husband was not responsible; that being sent for to go to Colifor sin, she was anxious to bestow it upon any of those kind ladies who are perpetually advertis ing "for infants to adopt," and was so anx ious to conceal her shame that there would be au probablity of her sprit, to reclaim her child. When the Doctor communicated the plan .to Mrs. Cunningham she expressed herself highly delighted with the arrangement. She was to feign all of the pains of child-birth, and the forum usual to such affairs were to be gone ..hrough. Dr. Uhl asked her when it would be must con venient for her to become a mother. Thursday, July 28, was the shortest time for the “ordinary gestation," and so the first week in August was agreed upon. The District Attorney then con sulted with Washington Smith, of the Altus douse Governors, and Mr. Kellock, one of the officers of that institution, and was promised a child at the proper time. He also found it necessary to find another phy sician who should take charge of the child and win. for its health, while it woe in waiting for Mrs. C., and accordingly sent for his most inti mate friend and his own personal physician, Dr. De La Montagne, of Fiskill. The-Doctor prom ised to lend his aid and came down to New fork for that purpose. Dr. Uhl and Dr. De La Montagnie were then brought together by Mr. Hull at his office, and, after a consultation, started out to find fitting apartments for the California widow and the un lawfully begotten child. No. 180 Elm street was eventually selected. To this place a marked child was taken yes terday afternoon from Bellevue. Mrs. Gunning nam being apprised that the infant was ready for called there about 0 o'clock, in the attire of a Sister of Mercy. Dr. Gilchrist was in bed, disguised as a wo man, its nightcap and gown, personating the newly-confined widow. The child „was ready packed in 'a basket, and she tookit without speaking, and left. Captain Speight, who had followed t iter from her own house, got into the same, car Ads her on her return, and saw her enter her house. On the outside were Copts. Speight, Hopkins, Dilks, District-Attorney Hall, and others. .12. r. Uhl was sent for by Mrs. Cunningham, and on [is at rival was ushered into a dark room, where Hrs. C. was in bed. • She feigned to ho very sick, and, groaned in tpparent agony. lie found a nurse ilrere, named lane Dell, washing the child. While he was there Dr. Catlin brought in a sail of blood and smeared the sheets, and other vise made it appear that hirth had actually Laken place. Mrs. Cunningham exclaimed soon after, , 'mice put my trust in God, and he has favored me; I shall now be revenged upon my prom zutors." Boon alter this, as Dr. Catlin was leaving the ootise, he was arrested. Dr. Montagnic got Dr. Chris hat and some of his clothes, and thus dis guised obtained admission as Dr. Uhl, saying he sad forgotten something. Capt. Dills went in with him, and up to the front room, second floor, where she was. Capt. Dilks said to her that having heard that he was confined, he thought it his limy to come and see her, and make himself acquainted with the fact. While saying this they were standing at the :oom door. She ordered the woman to clone the loor against them and put them out. They then entered, and 1/7. M. sac down by her side, while Bilks went down and let Mr. Hall and Captains Speight sod Hopkins in. 'They all then went up stairs to her room. She undertook to be very saucy and said the :hill was her legitimate child. They took it from her after a struggle. She screaming. "won't take my dear little innocent baby," "my tenting little daughter." They persisted, however, and sent it to Belle vue to its mother, who wan anxiously waiting for it. They then arrested Mrs. Cunningham, Ann Rural!, her sister, Jane Bell, the , nurse, and others. Alre. Cunningham ix now at No. 31 Bond ttreet, Ann Burns and {one Bell at the Station Trit. Tuaddy Err. Mr. N. Pomeroy, stopping at the Franklin House, having occasion to be up through the night, en gaged in forwarding cattle by railroad, discov :ring smoke issuing from the alley hastenvito the spot and found that a pile of shavings and finely split kindling wood had been piled in the Ingle of the building of Messrs. Baker & Thomp son, and ignited. Mr. Pomeroy succeeded in ex tinguishing the pile of kinffling, but the flames bad already caught high up the building, and in t few minutes lit up the roof of the adjacent hltick of Messrs. Gray & Thompson, at the cor oer•of St. Clair and Main streets. The flames immediately sprang across the alley to the south, taking Ghetto large storehouse and the dwell ing of Mrs. Board immediately South. Gillette store, upon the western side of St. Clair, was several times on .fire, but finally saved, with slight damage. "-The fire ran with great rapidity east, taking everything upon the alley and on the south side of Main street, to State Street, and south on State street, taking the residence of Mr. 11. C. Whitney. The fire spread south, on St. Clair street, as fai as the dwelling of Mrs. Beard, which was totally destroyed- Worth $2,000, and supposed to be insured $l,OOO at. Buffalo. The stores on the opposite sides of St. Clair, Main and State at. were frequently on fire, and all of them slightly injured, as were the goods, all of which were removed with all manner of rough usage. The firemen worked to their utmost ability, but with such combustible material, their efforts were nearly in vain. The loss falls generally upon the shoulders of young mechanics and mer chants, the most enterprising and industrious of our citizens—and in some instances it falls in deed heavily.
