A (thrum CASTLE UNDER THE Elsxxxa.—Ths death of the late Earl of Browsbury has extin guished one of the oldest titles in England, which has been borne by the'.Talbot family un interruptedly since the time of leery VI. The founder of the family was the celebrated John Talbot, who figures so conspicuously in Shake peare's historical playa: and the name has been strongly indentified with the interest of the Roman Catholic party in England, of which the late Earl woe one of the leiders. The death of the Earl, without heirs, hue induced the neces sity of bringing under the hammer a vast col lection of furniture, paintings, armor, and all kinds of miscellaneous relies which have accu mulated for centuries in the Talbot family.— Among these are included the armor in which John Talbot, the first Earl, encountered Joan of Are, and died under the walls of Poictlers, and the banners which have survived the ware of the Roses, or the Commonwealth, to be sold at last at auction to the higlheat bidder. Alton Towers, the principal seat of the family, and which according to Loudon, "presents the finest combination of gardenbuilding with garden ecenery i anywhere existing in Europe," is now open for the purposes of the auction. Sous time since, a.farmer living near Easton, Penn. .sent his daughter to a neighboring town to get ' a hydrad dollar note changed-for smaller bills. Arriving too late for banking _hours, she endeavoreit to effect her object with some of the merchants, but failed, and started on her home ward journey, when, she was overtaken by a stranger on hotiebank who we. very . attentive until they coached a lonesoMe place in the woods, when he demanded the note from her, and enforced the demand- by presenting a pistol. She accordingly handed out the money, but in passing it to him the wind blew it away, and the robber got off his horse to get it, when she put whip to her horse, and started off at good epeed,.' the highwayman's horse following. A pistol discharged after her only made the horses go the faster.— The young lady arrived home safely with the horse of the robber, on which was a pair of saddlebags containing fifteen hun dred dollars in good money. Tho horse was worth the money, she lost. A FACT TO PONDLIL—The Richmond (Va.) VOLUME LXX----NVMI3.E'R 292 A Jon ton 86xviettLEMMattns.--Lord Ellen borough 'was once about. to go on the circuit, when Lady Ellin:borough smilk that she should. like to accompany him.• 'ILO replied that he bad no objection, provided she did 'not encumbei the carriage with bandboxes, which were his utter abhore.nee. During the first day's journey Lord Ellenborough happening to stretch his ; legs, struck his foot against soasethingbelow the seat. He discovered that it was a bandbox. Lrp went the window and out went the bandbox. The coachman Mopped, and the footman thinking. that, the bandbox had tumbled out of the window by some extraordinary/chance, were going to pick it up, when Lord Ellenborough furiously called out, "Drive on!" The bandbox was ne cordingly left by the ditch side. Having reached • the county town where he was to officiate as judge, Lord Ellenborough proceeded to array himself for his appearance in the Court Nouse. "Now," said he, "where's my wig—where is my wig?" "My Lord," replied his attendant, "it was thrown out of the carriage' window." Ifran.—Later advises from Utah show how the news tf the military expedition to that Territory is received by tho saints. The tone of Young's organ ie scurrilous and defiant of Eastern "intermeddlers," but there is evidently some considerable apprehension that, if tho Go vernment sends a sufficient foroc there, the•Church' will not have thinge all their own way. A great deal of indignation is expressed against the Gentiles for their intolerance, the Mormon expounder of public opinion affecting to believe that the President intends a religious crusade, and not to assert the authority of the civil laws. In denouncing intermeddling, the Mormons condemn themselves, and virtually admit their own interference with the operations of the Federal officers. They openly talk as if the pretence of the lattei to only tolerated.by them so long as it is convenient to do so. . Friday's Buffalo Republi c Buys: Last night, about 10 o'clock, the body of a lady, wife of Mr. J. C. Patten, was found in the area in front of the United States Hotel, in an awfully mangled condition. Her skull was crushed in on the left temple, the face terribly contused, both shoul ders and both legs broken. The fracture of the skull was sufficient to cause almost instant death. She was picked up by the barkeeper, and con veyed inside the house. She was breathing heavily at the time she was picked np, but died in lass than three-quarters of an hour. An in quest was held, when it was ascertained that Mrs. Patten was in the constant habit of intoxi cation, and that she led her husband a terrible life, which he bore patiently. —She appeared to, have been insane with drink when shojumped out. FASHIONABLE CALL, •ND ALL THEY,SAID.--= "How do you do, my dear?" "Puttywell, think you." (They kiss.) "How have you been this age?" "Putty well. How have you been?" "Very well, thank you." "Pleasant, to-day." "Yes, very bright; but we had a shower yester day " "Are all your people well!" 'Quite well, thank you. How are yours?" "Very well—l'm obliged to you." "Have you seen Mary B—, lately?" "No; but I've seen Susan "You don't say so: Is she well?" "Very well, I believe." (Rising.) "Must you go?". "Yes, indeed; I have seven calls to make." "Do call again, soon." "Thank you; but you don't call on me once in an age." "0, you should notatay so! I'm sure Pin very good." "Good bye." A Pacrrasr.—At the piritualists' Convention at Ravenna, Ohio, on the 4th and fith lusts, one Mrs, Lewis, of Cleveland, said she was in favor of universal freedom, and that loving whomso ever she chose was a part of that freedom, and to confine her love to one man was an abridge ment of her right. She said that "although else hadono husband in Cleveland, she considered herself married to tho whole human race. All men were her husbands, and she had an undy ing love for them." We„ ax ono of the whole human race, deny the soft impeachment of Mrs. Lewis.,. and pro test against her claims to husband us:—C'Ocogo Tourno/. INinoo „tan ran REVOLT.—It seems possible that the revolt in India may have some tempor ary effect on our Indigo supplies. A private letter from Agra, of the 2•2 d of May, after stat ing that the forts were being armed and provi sioned, and that there was a prospect of the British residents being shut up and besieged, if the outbreak should become general, adds. ^The indigo factories in this district, and indeed, throughout the Doab, are at a standstill. Con tracts and business of oenry are suspended and Europeans are flocking from all quarters , or rett ‘ tge." Astornia MINT3rEK DRIVEN OCT or TUE SOUTIT. —Rev. Henry Cherry, formerly a missionary of the American Board in India, and for several years pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Geor gia, has just returned to Rochester, where he formerly resided, having been forced to leave the South on account of his political sentiments, which were on the side of freedom, and not of slavery. We are informed that he intends to remove to Michigan. As his pulpit in Georgia is now vacant, we expect soon to hear a call for volunteers. Some minister who has only a small capital of the Gospel will here find an excellent chance to invest it. Tot &Loons DANCIZILOUL—The .New York Commercial ..I.drertiser warns the young people who use thorn novel playthings, that they may become dangerous articles, by the introduction, through the pores of the vulcanized rubber, of which the covering is made: of atmospheric air, which, uniting with the gas contained in the en- 'elope, produces an explosive mixture analogous to fire damp. if by chance ignited, the effects might be fearful. Another danger is the liability to inhale the poisonous gas, should a boy at tempt to reintlate his partly exhausted Moon with air from his lungs. Wannes Comm &vim—We understand that bills of the Warren County Bank to the amount of one hundred thousand doLlarawere destroyed by the Directors and officers last week. The purpose is to replace them with new bills, on . better paper, from new plates which have lately been procured. The paper of the old bills proves to be poor and many of them are badly mutilat ed. The new bills, fo'n and 10's only, are beau- Arany executed and harder to alter or counter feit than tine of the old issue.—Warren (Pa.) Mat!. HMI VOICC eon PEACE NOT WAlL—According to correspondents at Washington, information has reached the representative of the Spanish government; that the latter is mollified by the efforts of Mexico to conciliate Spain's offended honot, and the projected hostilities are suspen ded, if not entirely postponed. Thin is a wise determination on tho part of Spain, but it is a Bad disappointment to the filibusters who were whetting their appetites afresh for Cuba. Tan following is an extract from a despatch at Washington by the steamer Ashy "Mollified by earnest and repeated 'effort of Mexico to conciliate the offended honor and dignity of Spain, the Governnient of Isabella withholds the projected naval demonstration against Vera Cruz, a possible satisfactory adjustment of pending questions being-for the moment reasonably perceptible in the nature of the incomplete overtures already make to Spain by the Mexican Government."
