The clerk, immediately before thr . aermon, gave out the Psalm in broad Wiltshire dialect, namely : Let us zing to the prayze:and glawry of God, three vusses o' the hundred an' Vourtean zaam—a version specially 'dapted to the 'vision, by myself; "Wily hop ye en, ye little bill; Au' Phut ear de's skip? le it 'cm you'in proud to nen Ilia area Me Igird !WAIN "Wh.y .kip yr o, ye Little hill, An' whit ear de', hop? le it 'ewer to preach to wo le cnto`d the Lard Biseop! •"Esee;—he V cocoa to preach to se, Thee It us AO snick at, An' Lies . glavrlow wog of imp; Au' blew the Led Bigwig" AN UNCIt'AL WEDDING SCRNE.—Some time since six young gentlemen bid farewell to the lasses who had won their hearts and Scotia's blooming heather, and sought the allures of America, in hope of being enabled the better to prepare for wedded life. They located at Chi cago, where the remembrance of their "bonnie Annie Lauries" inspired them to unusual and persevering exertions, till fortune at last so fa vored them that they sent home to Scotland the information that they were now anxious to see their betrothed, and accompanied the messap with a goodly remittance to pay their pass% The girls, for mutual protection and society, came over the ocean in the same vessel, and ar rived in safety at Quebec. Thence they em harked with several hundred other emigran 8 0! a river steamer, to continue their journey c ow the St. Lawrence. That steamer was chi ii fated Montreal, and of the six betrothed mallet fire found, either fiery or watery graves. TI sixth, Miss Jeannette Pettigrew, was take t !!ir drowned, and only by faithful and petal oat attention was Ler life saved. Aiil he. worldly possessions were gone, but kind-hearted women at Montreal supplied her abundantly when they heard her affecting story. Evelitu ally she reached her destination, ohd in a into number of the Chicago Trilnme there is chroni cled the marriage of Mr. Adam Tate, of Chi cago, to Miss Jeannette Pettigrew. He alone reaped the reward of his long exertions; and at the wedding there were present two of yhe other five young men, whose feelings when they contrasted the happiness of their friend with their own bereaved condition must have been sad indeed. Nnw.l4lalL Antusozwzrr.—The great through mail from Chicago to Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, has been transferred from the route by which it has hitherto been Carried, to the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne, and Chicago and Pennsylvania Central railroads. Under this ar rangement the mail leaving Chicago at 7.15 A. M. arrives 'at Pittsburgh at 6 A. M. of the fol lowing day, Philadelphia at midnight, Baltimore at 7.30 A. M., and Washington, at 10.30 A. M. of the some day following. The mail leaving Chicago at 7.45 P. Si. arrives at Pittsburgh at 7.30 P. M., Philadelphia and Baltimore at 1 P. Si., and Washington at 4 30 P. M. of the follow ing day. Under the former arrangement these mails trek by the Indianapolis route, upon which changes were made at Michigan City, ' Lafayette, Indianapolis, Dayton, Xenia, Colum bus and Benwood and some nine hours more time was occupied in reaching Pittsburgh than by:the present arrangement.—National bar/. ItSILBOADS IN TOE FLEE AND. SLATS STATES. —The whole length of railroads in operation in the United States, is given in a recent publica tion at 24,290 miles, of which 6,605, or 27 per cent., are in the slave States, and 17,685 miles in the free states. A German geographer was employed to draw a map of the States, on a large scale, to exhibit the extent and the valhe of the railroad interest in the United States. A friend who was inspecting the map suggested that it would be. a good theme for a lecture, Il lustrating the financial and economical value of free labor. "I think," said the saran, "that the map itself is the best lecture. No man can look at this close net-work of roads on ono aide of the line , and then carry his eye to the broad blank space " ' ' without seeing the di& words." Tue ..—The tele graph .te sudden det.th of Captat.. Henry, ... the United States Navy, at York, Pa., on Sunday night last. His disease was hemorrhage of the bowels. The deceased entered the navy in 1812 as sailing master, and served during the war with Great Britain, when our infant navy won its brightest laurels. His last service was performed as cap tain of the sloop of war Plymouth, about ten years ago. He was placed upon the reserved list by the late "retiring board," and at the time of his death was about sixty-five years of age. He was a native of Maryland, but for many years a resident of Pennsylvania.—Balti more Nun. A NEW SOUTHERN STATE-8. Mr. Futeem is in favor of having the Indian Territory west of Arkansas, between the lied and the Arkansas rivers, and extending westward to the one hun dredth degree of west longitude, organized into a State and admitted Into the Union. After considerable effort and much rally ing through the newspapers, that vessel failed to secure a cargo. As she was fitted out for this trade, the only reason of her failure must have been a disinclination to the venture on the part:otour shippers." • IN Cinointtati, a fine looking Newfoundland dog dropped, his - muzzle, and instantly, as if fearing the dg slayer, thrust hie nose into it again and trotted along, with a very happy "rag of las tail. A Common Sass's Visa.:—The Provideace Journal bag the following sensible article in regard,to matters in Kansas: Taking the Democratic view of the nature and importanceof the disturbances at Lawrence, what do they amount? Simply to this—that in that half organized territory, where all author thority except the direct authority of the gen eral government, is disputed, where a majority of the people hold that the legislature was im posed upon them by foreign votes, anti not by foreign votes alone, but by foreign violence; where many of the laws are admitted to be in direct violation 'of the plainest provisions of the constitution of the United States, and the only defence offered for them is, that their enforce ' meat has never been attempted, the. people of Lawrence have gone through the form of organ izing a government for themselves, without ask ing the consent pt the Legislature - . Grant that all. this is technically wrong, that the government thus organized possesses ne le gal validity,' no power beyond the voluntary consent of those who adopt it and submit to it, that any attempt to enforce its ordinances would be an invasion of individual right, and would subject the otlanderhe penalties of the laws, the laws of the bogus Rgislature, if you please: what then' Is this a ease to call out on army? Is this one of those offences so dangerous 'and enormous, that only blood can wash thorn put? Urart—lt is said to be well understood at Washington that trouble in Utah is to be antici pated from causes entirely distinct from the peculiar institutions of the Mormons One of these tlffictilties and perhaps the principal one. as stated by the N. Y. Commernal, is that Brig ham Young claims title to all the lands in the territory, and never recognised the United States surveys. Neither have any of the Mor mons purchased lands in accordance with the laws of the United States, and of course all parts of the territory are at this day still open to prb-emption. Not an individual in Utah holds a valid title to the lands be occupies; and any one now purchasing lands there according to the laws of the United States would have a right to call upon the federal courts to enforce his right and put him in possession of his pur chase. This may either simplify or complicate the course to be pursued towards the Mormons by the Federal government, according to dream stances it constitutes the basin of a direct issue, should it ho deemed advisable to raise one without touching the question of religious belief or practice (always.one of great delicacy,) and as snob would carry with it an undivided popular sentiment. Gov. WALKER is sending dispatches to Wash ington, saying that the Topeka party have yielded and the people of Lawrence abandoned what he calls their treason Every body who knows anything of the character of the abok. tionists of Lawrence know better; but thFie dispatches indicate that somebody is bound ,to yield and that Walker (having become ashamed of his own folly) is now prepared to do it, but give the credit of the morewent to his oppo nents. Poor, indiscreet, theoretical Walker. When it is necessary for him to send misrepresenta tions to Washington in order to screen his own folly, his condition must be pitiable indeed, Kansas is a terrible ordeal for Governors—they all - pass regularly through the three first stages —first they came to be despised by the Border Ruffians—second by the free Slate men, and third by themselves. Wiilker seems to bo just now entering the third stage, and is re ported to be following Shannon's plan of drowning consciousness in whisky. The only termination of the career of the Governors of Kansas is to leavo the territory in ignominious Gee. HUNTING FUGITIVE SLAVES AT CAIII.G.--CAIED, ILL., July 27.—0 n Sunday morning, a party of Missourians, supposed to be near fifty in num ber, came over from the Missouri shore to search for fugitive slaves--some ten or fifteen chattels having recently escaped from that part of the StatekTheysuroundedand searched several ne we? caNns, but' at lqngt h the free negro residents, excited 'by their threats andinsulting language, determined to permit no further search, without a warranti. and offered determined resistance. I could not ascertain which party fired - first, but a number of shots were exchanged, and a Mis sourian by the naitue of Wilson, had his jaw blown off. Three of the Missourians have been arrested—among whom is the ferryman who brought.them over. They will be tried here this afternoon. There is great excitement in town about it—ft large number of citizens taking sides with the Missouri slave hunters. The slaves that they were after were not in Cairo at the ,time, but bad passed through there on their way n I Co:. - _ UsErn.srEss ur MISSIONARTES.—Tho North American Review, in noticing the death of the 8 e Rev. Dr. Smith, of Beirut, Syria, speaks of his pre-eminetly valuable contributions to Sacred t P_ Geography and Philology, and adds: "It is worthy of emphatic remark that these departments of knowledge-have received more aid from devoted and earnest missionaries than from all other classes of inquirers—their world renowned professors having derivellihe choicest materials for their master works of scholarly diligence, from the observations and researches of those self-denying philanthropists. Sisrvcr t 5 Minim/r. —A letter published in the Nile's Enquirer, says, that a man from Kentucky, named Wilkinson, had moved into Berrien county, Michigan, with his slaves, in tending to hold them there, while ho is engaged in some kind of work. The matter appears to excite much attention in Michigan, under the belief that this case is instigated by an inten tion to try the virtue of the Dred Scott decision. It is not stated that Wilkinson has expressed any such design. Tun Princeton, (lnd.,) Chaim tells a story of a scythe fight near Oakland, In that county.— Some of the hands in a wheat field got into a row and used their ugly weapons so effectually, that two men were wounded, if not more clan gorously, certainly more fearfully to look at, than any we have ever heart of who survived. One man received a wound in thathigh eighteen inches long by two inches deep, and another was wounded quite as badly in the chest. It is'the English system of conducting manufacturing business, thus to lessen the production of goods, and is thought to..bc the only successful mode of oper ating. Tun Ilanduras Oceanic Railroad, it is amid, has been completely organized in London, and will proceed at once to locate and "construct the road, which would open another communication between the Atlantic, and Pacific.
