Some weeks since a slave escaped from Ken 'lucky, and was followed to one of the central counties of Ohio, Champagne county, we The 11. B. deputy -Marshals who were on histrack allege that they traced- him Ito the . loft of a house where he had taken Zreftige, but that being armed he fired upon them l and they, although four in number,. were unable to arrest him. They left the house and the negro made good his escape. The Marshals then nwie information against a number of individ uals, four we believe, who were in or about the house where the negro, had taken refuge, charg ing them with aiding the fugitive to escape; and, armed with warrants for their arrest, returned to the county from which the armed negro. had frightened them. They succeeded in making the. arrests; but while on their way to Cincin nati with the prisoners a writ of habeas corpus was issued to bring the prisoners before the Probate judge toinquire into the legality of their arrest and detention. The writ was not served . in the county, because the marshals had got out of it ahead of the officers charged with its ger ' vice; but the Sheriff of Clarke county was then : 'entrusted with it, and while undertaking to serve - it, was fLred upon by the Marshals and severely wounded, and he and his posse were successfully resisted .The Marshals, however, were arrested in Greene county, and were committed to jail ' - clutiged with assault and battery w ith intent to kill, 60 such othercriminal offences as naturally grew out of the resistance. If the democratic party can compass it they will all be severely punished for exercising allegiance upon their own soil to ' the laws of their own State. . The question arises whether Ohio is really posseised of the attributes of sovereignty. Ac cording to Judge Leavitt's decision any fool, bum_ or scoundrel who may get an appointment ma Li. 8. When in chase of a fugitive from the horrors of 6 degrading servitude on a southern plantation, or in a Southern workshop, they will palliate any cruelty which the pursuiL.may cause, even should the life of the victim be forfeited at the hands of the Marshal and his train of deputies, under the specious plea that they are acting under the authority of the law of the land, which, accord ing to their logic must be respected and impli citly obeyed at hazards and on all occasions.— The fugitive slave law may, even according to their hwn admissions, be repugnant to the moral and christian feelings of a large portion of the people of the union, and its absolute require ments in direct and manifest opposition to the dictates of the consciences of a large and influ ential class of citizens, yet, we are taught by these "democratic" politicians that any other position than that of "passive obedience," is treasonable, and calculated to destroy the union of the States. This is the position of southern democrats, and of their "doughtitce" allies of the north, who disguise their pro-slavery senti ments under the name of "National' feelings. But let a law be enacted, or en election be de cided In opposition to their views, and then observe with what facility they will change their tactics. Their case is the old story over again of the Bull and the Ox—they are only law abiding as long as the law suits their purposes, and no longer. We have had recently a striking evidence of their respect for the proper law making power, in the city of New Tort, Viers the streets were given up to riot and blemished, and where the private residences of citizens have been riddled with bullets as though an invading army had taken possession of the metropolis of this great country. And what caused this dreadful destruction of human life and property We answer that it originated solely from the refusal of Mayor Wood—one of the most influential of the "National democrats" of New York—to obey enact of Assembly, passed in the manner prescribed by the constitution of the State. This Mayor Wood, who urged upon the people of his owncity and State, acquiescence in a law of Congress, which constituted them, under fines and other penalties, slave-catchers, although they, from their very souls, abhored Slivery—this law-abiding Mayor cast aside his pacific sentiments andhispatient forbearence, when the supreme authority came into conflict with his distribution of offices and patronage. In defence of this prerogative—such was his rage and indignation at its withdrawal—he a the goo • treatedgovntem c a nt of n an a g c b i city t w h h e i ch p e c a o e n e t td a n n s d popula tion of three fourths of a million, and consigned it to the tender mercies of a cruel and blood thirsty mob, which has barricaded its streets and held possession of its public offices. The latest intelligence from Minnesota fur- nishes additional evidence of the respect for law and the legally expressed will of the people, en ' tertained by the branch of the sham-democratic famililecated in that. territory. It will De re membered that at the recent election held there for delegates to a convention to form a State Constitution, the republican party suc ceeded in carrying a fair and effective majority of the delegates—filly-nine out of the hundred who were elected. The democratic minority, who on other occasions, have claimed to feel such a holy reverence for the vox populi, not only refuse to meet the majority in convention, but actually propose to get up a separate and distinct organ ization, and thus expose their hypocrisy and double-dealing in its proper light. Their de precation of the "higher law" doctrine--their Aofessions of love for the Constitution—and their r4uch vaunted respect for the voice of the peoplOehereTer manifested, are as hollow and unsubstantial as tiny of the other high-sounding pretensions, by means of which they have been too long permitted to impose on the American people. How long will the people submit to-fB6 rule of this dangerous party Surely the day of deliverance is at hand. New York Correspondence. Nsw-Toss, July 16, 1857. Editors Gazette More riots, more killed, and more wounded. You will really bare to order these words stereotyped, as it has now got to be a weekly affair.- Your readers have doubtless already heard about the last—l mean that in the Seventeenth Ward on Sunday—one man killed and others wounded—was renewed on Monday afternoon, when the exasperated Germami pur sued some obnoxious policemen into a building. I saw it afterwards when the doors and windows were broken in—the mob shouting "Down with the Metropolitans!" at nightfall the military were ordered under arms at their different ar mories. I visited those in Broadway, belonging to 7th Regiment; they were most eager to be led to the "seat of war," believing that a few ball cartridges, rightly put, would soon stop these frequent riots. In sober truth, the right think ing portion of New York know that, to Wood and him alone, we are indebted directly and in directly for all our riots of the past month—in stance, his determined opposition .to the Police Law; his persistent efforts to retain his pet, Chas. Devlin, as Street Comminsioner; his stud ied delay in surrendering the station houses; and then his saying in a caucus that, "there's to be a d—d big fight in the matter yet," the bands of armed rowdies know that there are some high in authority who will back them up. "Wood," is their war-cry, though the Irish call him "Fernandy Wud." Yesterday' noon, the Mayor reluctantly signed the resolution as pass ed by the Common Council, surrendering Police Stations and Telegraph, though they still refuse to give up the Chief's office in the City Hall. You will remember in my last that I feared we would have further trouble—We have had it. However, the calm and conciliatory advice of the respectable Germans of the Seventeenth Ward, at the meeting on Tuesday night, quieted the fractious ones for the present, but a truce to the subject. The commencment exercises of grand old Harvard College began on yesterday. The principal feature will be an orationfrom Edward Everett, now acknowledged " as America's great est living orator." The classic grounds, the in telligent auditors, and the theme will prove in spiration enough for a splendid effort. Among the valuable new inventions that I have just seen here, is a "Folding Carriage Top." So simple in frame that it may be at tached in two minutes; so light andportable that it can be carried under the seat; and so cheap withal—price being less than a common top— box of which will answer for a buggy or sleigh, cart or carriage. The same patentees have also a " Storm Protector." Even in a driving rain it prevents a diop from entering. Can be at tached in ten seconds, then folded up and stow ed away under the fold of the dash. Really owners and drivers of vehicles will thank the inventors for this new comfort. . The excessive ha weather has already driven off crowds to the watering places, As usual Niagara gets a large share of the first run."-- I notice that Some five hudred arrived on Mon day at the grand old Cataract and InternationaL Newport too and Cape May with its magnificent beach and spacious hotels so invitingly near the Atlantic serf the bare recollection of which is refresing though years since I bathed there.— These latter also have their share of visitors.
