R. was coming North early yesterday morning, and when nearing Earlville, Remy Tink, a brakesman on the train, who was standing up afterlputting down his brake, 'was struck in the beet of his head by a bridge under which the train was passing. The unfortunate_ man fell from his position, breaking his leg in the fall, and on the stoppage of the train was picked up dead. The body was brought to this city', and an inquest held on it, when a verdict was rendered in accordance with the above facts. That bridge is a nuisance, and should at once be abated. We understand this is not the first victim to the lowness of its arch. The deceased was a native of Prussia, and for several years was in the employ of Bolt & Maltby, of this place, which position he left only a few months since to take his late occu pation. WASIIINGTON. July 17.—The sum appropriated for prosecuting the land surveys in California for the year ending the 30th of June last, have been exceeded by about $175,000. In conse quence of the deficiency the accounts of the Deputy Surveyors have been suspended. The liabilities will lie over till Congress provides means for their liquidation. The Secretary of the Interior has decided that these surveys must be continued, and that the hundred thousand Hams for the fiscal year ending June, 1858, can be used only for that period, and not to dis charge previous liabilities. Robert Cross, another of the election rioters, was to-day found guilty of an attempt to kill a policeman who was engaged in arresting him. He was sentenced to eight.years in the l'eniten tia, the utmost extent of the law. WASHINGTON Cu,, July 17.—The Grand Jury found true bills against a number of alleged par- ticipanta in the election riots, embracing several cases of assault and battery with intent to kill. Fourteen of the n cused were arrested on a !tench warrant and officers are in pursuit of the others. The' Ora id Jury in their report say that the exciting ca se of tae riot and subsequent bloodshed in the Fourth'ard may be ascribed mainly to the presence of certain Baltimorians joined by a large number of disorderly persons of Washington at or near the polls. The City Councils this afternoon accepted the invitation of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Co. to join the Western excursionists in Balti more next Monday, and appointed a committOe to extend to them hospitalities at Washington. Resolutions were adopted tustnining the Buchanan administra tion approving of the Dred Scott, decision land course of Governor Walker in Kansas, advocat ing the repeal of the prohibitory law, and direct ing that an address to the people of Vermont be prepared.
