The increase of popula tion is about 85 per cent.; so we have allowed a large margin for more favorable crops. Look ing to the consumption of Indian corn btes.d, the consumption of wheat for flour and seed in these States will not exceed 46,000,000 bushels, so that there will be, assuming an average crop, twenty-eight millions of bushels for exporta tion. This is probably double the amount which went out of the north-west to the Atlantic coast. Core Crop of IB4il. Corn Crop 0f1857. Of this great cereal crop fully one-half goes' into surplus. partly in bulk, partly in pork, lard, whiskey. cattle. There will be a greater surplus in 1857 than in 1850, by fully 60,000,000 bushels, which is equivalent to an increase of thirty millions of dollars. There will be half the same increase on wheat, and one-fourth as much on oats. The advance in hay, which is already much of it gathered, will be full fifteen millions more,'whiali chiefly appears in the weight. of tattle, horses, dm. In addition to all these considerations, we must remember that the crop of 1856 fellbelow that of 1849 very much. If our hypothesis ooa full average crop should turn out true, withink. the surplusses of the' West wino from eighty to a hundred millions of dollars better then ;in 185t5. There is a full demand for these, and our railroads furnish a ready and cheap outlet to all markets. A FIRE-EATER'S ANICIDOT6 Or Gov. WALSEIL —One of Maas "Operations."—For ourselves we acknowledge en inability to discriminate be tween the public and private character of an in dividual, in so far as to agree that he may be a scoundrel in one capacity and a patriot in an other. That be, Walker is sot a man of the highest principles of personal honor, will suffi ciently appear from the following narrative of one among many similar financial exploits : When Robert J. Walker was Senator from los ascertained that an old gentle man in Middlesex county in this State was dis-. 'posed to sell a large estate in negroes. Accord ingly, in company with a colleague in the House of Representatives, Walker made the old gen tleman a visit, and, after a protracted negotia, tion, succeeded in purchasing the slaves. And he got them on good terms, for the old gentle man—a devoted Democrat—was charmed by the graceful condescension of the distinguished Sen ator. The aggregate price of the negroes was something more than forty thousand dollars, for which Walker gave a note or draft payable in New Orleans. But the old gentleman would not sell his slaves except on condition that- they were to be kept together on a plantation in the South. Well, the slaves were taken to New Orleans, were put upon the block and dispersed to the four winds—the purchaser realizing a consider able profit by the ..transaction.” - The note or draft matured, was presented for payment, was protested, and from that day to the present time not a cent has been received, either by the old gentleman or his heirs, for fifty thousand dollar's worth of negroes 1 Meanwhile Walker has lived in affluence, and is believed now to be a Ind- Bemire.
