Entirely satisfied as I am with the course adopted, up to this time, by the people of Eansae—convinced that it has been dictated by a desire to preserve the peace, the reputation and the glory of our emu:dry—knowing that it bag, at every stage, been characterized ty the most conservative moderation and laudable re• gard for the tights of others—having scan . at every step the plainest manifestation of an anx ious desire to avoid even • the eromblance of en croachment or aggremion, I should he false to every manly impulse and every reuse of duty, if ,I allowed the aspersions of the Meemige to pass Unnoticed. Unless the Message shall Waite and stimulate new invasion of oar Territory and fresh. ontrage upon our citizens, it will produce to us no regret to it has caused no trurprise. After having seen OUT people trampled oil, oppreesed and robbed, on the one band by the invaders of their Mil, and on the other by the influence, the autionty, and the officers of the present Administration; after having -witnessed the cold-blooded murder of an unarmed and unoffendiug citizen by an offi cer of the Administration who is not only unmo lasted by the laws, and unrebuked by the Presi ' dent who appointed him, but who has, perhaps, strengthened hie official tenure andenhanced hi alls chances of promotion by the ad; it is not it ' surprising that we should, by the howl Of that 'Administration, be misrepresented and pervert ed. After having seen the Chief Magistrate, ',. during five organized invasions of our Territory, I emmoved by a single sympathy in favor of an 1 1 ipoffending people, innocent of all wrong, and laboring only to carry out faithfully for *em otive! the doctrine of self-government, and to Conn build up sad extend the greatness of ourming try,--after having seen our h avaders co upon us armed (without reproof if not with offi cial permission.) from the contents of.the Arse- Lusts of the United States, co system of martial law over life and property regulated only by the uncontrolled will of vindictive and irresponsible men, a . system under which life was taken and property destroyed; the highways obetrnoted; travelers seized, searnhed and de-. taimd; all the pursed* of life paralyzed and the _destidotion and extermination of whole , settle manta threatened and evidently intended—bsoked up by the sanction and , authority of the Federal Offitiere, who pledged Publicly the mi-operation of the president, and all based upon the fact that a man encouraged, perhaps aided, by his friends, bad made bis escape from an arrest on a Cons en ta ble's peace warrant—efter having thus s our natural and legal protectors joining In the most atrocious measures of oppression and wrong, it is no matter of surprise to Imo misrepresenta tions of our position and our objects emanating from the same source. This is not the mode nor the time in which to discuss the themes of this message. Expecting. as I have a right to expeot from the clearness t ef the exclusive title I am prepared to show, tha I shall enjoy a seat and a voice on the floor of the House, I am willingly patiently "to bide my time." If it .is illegality and incipient treason for a new State to be forthed without an enabling act of Congress, I will show that four teen Senators of the United States hold their eeate, and seven States stand in this Union by vir,tue olillegel and treasonable proceedings— that Congress hag sanctioned revolution, illegal e - ity and treason , again and again; and that th rank andnoxioto weed has even flourished in the White Rouse and the Executive D I partment; and, having vindicated my people, will also, with the utmost confidence ask of em of es, vindicating proceed to the min., and secondary t myself in such a manner, I met, as to show the attack to have been ill-advised and unfortunate. They started on foot with their charge, to the, Hammond street Station house, whioh they reached in safety, and sea cured their prisoners for the night, although followed by a very large crowd of whites and bisoks. The slaves claim that they have all been on this side of the river frequently by the consent of their masters. • About S o'clock, application was made to Judge Burgoyne for a writ of HaVeas Corpus, to bring the slaves before him. This was put in the hands of Deputy Sheriff Buckingham to serve, „who, accompanied by several assistants, pro ceeded to Hammond Street Station House, where the slaves were lodged. Some time was spent In waiting for the arrival of Mr. Bennett, Deputy U. S. Marshal. When he arrived he woo un willing to give them up, and a long time wee spent parleying between the Marshal and the Sheriff's officers. The Sheriff being determined that the writ should be executed, Mr. Bennett went out to take counsel with his' frieede. Fi nally, through the advice of Mayor Fir e . Mr. Bennett agreed to lodge the staves in the jail, ready to be taken cut at the order of Judge Burgoyne. Judge Burgoyne, having to be ab sent from the city to-day, will out hear the case until Wednesday next. At the Station house, Lieutenant Hazen show ed his disposition to favor the elaveholder, by driving out of the room the gentleman who had sworn out the affidavit before Judge Burgoyne, and who had accompanied the Sheriff to point out the persona named. in the writ, although he let Mr. Gaines, the slave claimant, come in at pleasure.
