Thoughts on the Word' Watch's.Mark 13, 37 . - There is a word—a Scripture call So brief and plain few words outmatch; It comes to you, to me, to all, With force and power—the word is "Watch." Christians, as soldiers of the arose Are oall'd to watch the, insidious foe, A crowugo gain or heaven to lose, Eternal bless or endless woe. --,Watch all our actions with suspense.; We scarce can tell how slight a cause Might bring reproach or give offence To God our Maker, or his laws. Witch all our words; the tongue, we know, Portrays each feeling nod desire, And yet it 1.9 that coerce of woe — Whose "babbling sets a world on fire." Watch our affections where they're plied ; . The pride of life or wealth or fame, Perhaps the mind has these embrao'd, For these indtfiged an toward flame. 0 who can watch the wandering heart • Where thoughla chase thought beyond control, 'Till grace divine doth aid impart To 'laminate the darken'd soul. Watch lest some call his been refue'd; Watch judgments in the world abroad; And watch teat mercies are abused Sent daily from the hand of God . Watch all the favors Ile bestows To meet our wants from day to day, And watch that gratitude for diose Inspires the heart to watch and pray. Who can describe that, worti aright ! In meaning who can find its match! In youth, In age, by day, by night, Reader remember you must watch! Tamanarr, Jan. 26, 1858. H. They should beware, betrayer, of purchasing them, for they are no more tit to eat than so mai; poison. The biri/ knot only out of amen but the recent snow storm has deprived it of its ordinary food, and it now has to resort to any thing it can procure, generally live leaves of ever green treee and buahes, some of them rank poi son. An individual will eats pheasant for sup per, and congestion of the brain will ensue, or he will soddenly fall dead, and the coroner's, ver dict will be apoplesy. A whole family will be taken sick, 'and, unless the peculiar habits of the pheasant are known, they will seek In vain for the. the cause. Death frequently happens in this way. Daring the British occupation of Phil. adelphis, when the officers indulged themselves in pheasant shooting on Wissahickon heights, seven persona were poieeme4 at the clipper sea ceeding the sport. The bird, unable on account of the depth of the snow to find hie natural food, was compelled to teed on the Ws and leaves of the laurel, (saimio Latifotia.) • Death ensued. A scientific friend has just exhibited to us the crop and inteetinee, with the bodyof pheasant, wheighing lib. 14t oz. The crop and stomach were crammed with half decomposed laurel. They offer to give all information gratuitously, at their office, or by letter, and to famish tickets at the lowest prices, with letters commending the be rent to the friendly attention of • the Company's itgents on the way. The League is raid to have been conducted with very gratifying siteeens, although tinder difficulties wholly unexpected. Those on whom the business has been thrown have had to per form their duties with little notice and less sup port from the public. This state of things has, h owever, been accounted favorable to united and harmonious effort in conformity with the princi ples and objects of the enterprise. It is meat:tined as worthy of note that not a dollar has been paid to hire, support or assist any settler going to Kansas; that - the League, by giving information and by providing tickets at low rates, seeming safe, comfortable and speeds transportation, have rent to Kansas, by their direct ageney, about three thotticind persons, and by indirect influence, a very large number more; and that they have a prospect of doing much more this year than the last, New York being proved to be the meat important point in the country for this operation. t These recta present a marked contrast to the projects proposed at the South, where .a plan has been seriously considered, for enlisting the legislatures of several states to levy a tax on ne gross, to be expended in hireing two or three hundred mon in each state to go to Kansas, in order to vote and fight for slavery, paying also their subsistence and expenses. If ten states should` rend three hundred men eaoh, they would accomplish only a small part of what the Kansas League performed last year by the ef forte of two gentlemen in this 'city. —N. Y. COM.
