Tun KIPTIBLICAX Convernos no Otno.--We find le the Cincinnati papers of Saturday the full proceedings of the Republican State Convention held at Columbus on Friday, the 18th. It was the largest delegate convention ever held in Ohio, every county being represented. The convention was called to order-by Hon. J. B. Giddings, upon whose motion Hon. Benj. B. Cowan, of Belmont, was chosen chairentn. Com mittees g* mitte of one from each ten - t onal district ' were then appointed, on ereden to nominate officers, and to report resolutio ; and during their absence, Hon. Irseris D. Campbell enter tained the convention with a speech. He said : !The honor of being called upon to address such a Coriveitiden on inch an occasion, was not small or.inappreciated. This:day is illustrious in the aeons of our history. It is the second only to that one when the declaration was pro claimed to the world that all men were born free and equal. He referred to the early history of this slave question under our National Govern ment. The sentiments ofJeffersonand tho early Fathers were referred to. But now, hot, Mang ed. Look at the position of Georgia, and South Carolina to-day—taking steps to extend this in stitution into territories which by solemn com pact were declared to be dedicated to freedom, by the force of the revolver, and the bowie knife. He felt no desire to disturb slavery where D existed by State law, but beyond that, we could not ant ought not to go. The spirit if not the express terms of the Constitution contemplated the diminution and final eradication of slavery. How has it been in practice I We know it has been extending and increasing. Disregarding all agreements and crompremiees, however solemnly made, the South has broken over the barriers, and has extended slavery over new and vast tracts of our common country. - Will the North tamely submit to these things! Can It without dishonor! The political power of slavery is at . this time more than that of swim of the free states of the North. He refer red to the action of the Slave power, which ye toe&the bill to improve rivers and harbors, and at the' same time paid ten millions of dollars to purchase the Ideals valley. We roast put an m ilk end to these thin We must stop these en croachments u r equal rights. Be did not desiie make war upon the Booth, but he felt it rev Important to go into a war of extermination upon the dougA fates of the North. There is the field of our labor. -Here we can he felt. . . It is said by our opponents that they are about to witness a, grand burr up here to-bay. • He thought they 'were destined to be disappointed. There must be no faUture here to-day. There le no difference about principle. It will be st burning and lasting shame to the name of Ohio, if voter a moment permit any difference about men to divide us.. Better far that one thousand men sink into oblivion and their names be heard of minors in time, thin that Ohio fail to take her proud stand to-day at the he of the grand Ind mighty army of freedom." Board of PubLic Works—Alesander 4 l Conover, of BrutmL ,Supreme Court—Long Term, Jaoob Brinker hoff, of Richland; Short Term, C. C. Converse, of Muskingum. Of these nominees, Messrs. Baker, Gibson and Converse were formerly leading Whigs, and Messre.Srinkerhoff and Kimball prominent dem ocrats. When the nomination forldeutenant Governor was announced, Mr. Ford came forward and said : - His nomination was entirely unexpected. He would sttpport the ticket, not because he was on it, but because be had an interest in it. Ho had promised (in the Philadelphia Know Nothing Convention) that Ohio should speak far Freedom, and now he hoped she would. lie would not make a speech. He expected to go through the Beate and talk to all the people. Everybody should hear him as much as they wanted to. He had promised to expend a barrel of strew on this canvass, and he intended to sweat it ont. Mr Brinkerhoff was also called on for a speech, He responded elaborately, going in for the plat form and nothing else, saying that be was not in different to the favorable opinion of good men, and that the Convention had given him the place he wanted. - . The Convention after ettending-the session to ten o'clocia, P. M., adjourned amidst much en- thuslasm. Thus has the Republic= movement in Ohio been folly inaugurated and under the most favor =to:Auspices. The ticket presented is a strong one, the platform good, and the united action or its friends will secure its triumphant election. brotartsT—While the Republican Convention was in cession at Columbus, Ohio, another was gathered at Indianapolis, Indiana. The Cincin nati Commercial describes it as a most enthatins tin assemblage, and much larger than there had been any anticipation of. It says : yesterday morning early, the people began to come in from every direction; in squads, in sem panics, and in battalions; on foot on horseback, in wagons, cariages, and railroad cars; with banners waving and standards 'held high in the air, some having queer devices and other' queer mottos. The day was ushcrell in with the ftring of cannon, and each train of cars, upon its arrival at the de pot, was welcomed by a solute of tree guns. At an early hour the mass began to move tow ard the State House yard, where a stand was erec ted and seats made in the shade of the beautiful grove. The number was estimated, variously from eight to fifteen thousand, and thought by many to be at least double the number present there on a similar occasion a year ago. The whole state was represented, and all the leading Republicans were • present, including nesaly all the anti-Nebraska members of Con gress chosen last year. The platform adopted in 1854 was endorsed and re-adopted and a new State Committee appointed. There being no election in Indiana this year there were no nom inations to make, the only object of the conieu tion being to keep alive the Republican flame and show the Smith and its doughfaced allies that the free spirit of the people in emotive and de termined as ever. • __ _ _ The New York Tribune says that at the last meeting of. the Board of Overseers the Corpora- Mon of Cambridge University, as is usual sent in for confirmation the names of those on whom they proposed to confer degrees at the apPrOach ing Commencement. Among these were the-Hon. Robert C. Winthrop and the Hon. Samuel A. Eliot, on whom its was proposed to confer the degree of LL. U. Mr. E. is a moot r es pectable gentleman, and a zealous friend to the College, which he faithfully and gratuitously served as Treasurer for a long series of years; but while in Congress he voted for the odious Fugitive Slave Law. Mr. Winthrop was readily dubbed LL. IL, bat Mr. Eliot was rejected because that vote made him obnoxious to the people of Mas sachusetts. The McConnelsville (0.) Enquirer, a Demo cratic paper thus. speaks of Mr. Chase, the Re publican candidate for Governor of that Butte: Against Mr. Chase as a man no party in Ohio can have any objection. We believe him to be a man of Singular purity of life, of the most up right and irreproachable character as a citizen, possessed of the reedy business capacity and en dowed'with talents not only of a high order, but calculated to fit biro for any official station the people may see fit to bestow upon him. Many persons who would not have joined the Association before, will do to now that they have found out it can make legislators. Mr. Tite'e success points to aspiring men the road to Westminster. They will see the words tub hoe signo rivers written over he entrance of the Administrative Reform Association, and they will be inspired with new life and new energy. It must not be forgotten, however, that this movement is but the beginning of the end. It was started rather es a preventive to come dreaded popular movement, than by any earnest desire to reform the stagnation and routine that exist in the Governmental Departments. The Chairman at one of the late meetings of the Association stated that 'the was one of the few thoughtful and earnest men who believed that there well danger in the excitement of the public mind on the misgovernment of the country." Therefore, through the efforts of this Association t :we must not look for anything beyond the infusion of some fresh blood We the arteries of the-coun try's body. The rest will come hereafter.
