Cornepondeutee of the Plttebrugh Ostett*. &MAI. Comm . , July 14,1855.. Mr. Editor:—Since I last wrote you the cause. pf the Republican party goes bravely on. The Know Nothings have met and made their nomi nations—end such nominations ! For the legis lature they have nominated a man who, in days past, acted sometimes 'with the. Whig party; but at all times when the faction in Butler; who finally sold out the Whig party and who for years have been. acting on the Know Nothing platform, conhinot succeed in palming upon thp party their special favorites, this nominee inva riably played the finger to tar!) out the behests of the band which dictated his principles, and by ouch infinencee often succeeded in defea ting the Whig ticket. The Whig party . owes thismorai.. nee nothing and would disgrace•iteelf by eleva ting him to a post in which he would.be a literal know nothing representative: Time would fail me; nor would you willingly grant the room ne cessary to fully characterise the etherial pro clivities of this Know Nothing. The balance of the ticket has been selected from the considered nothings of the old Locofoco party, and are, indeek fit representatives of • Know Nothing Convention, The whole selection, manifests the-greatest vent. of material; nor can . a ticket of .more ordinary men 'be found in. the county. The party is evidently wanting in con fidence in itself—in its. ability to endure the hot sans between this and the second Tuesday—or they would have selected men of some capacity if they had not occupied very prominent pool •tions in 'their old party. The Locofooo ticket is compoeed of better men, but of equally objectionable principles. They en dome all the ontragesperpetrated by the slavery propagandists. They go in for the most reckless and. demoralising system of traffic in salient, spirits, end seek a repeal of all laws restraining that sale, and cover every species of abuse and deception under the much abused name of ps alm:racy. • - From this state of things, then, It is plain that no man who really loves bin country, and desires to see it by its institutions rise and shine forth, an. encouraging light to all mankind, to sea freedom of body as well as mind from the secret ly contracted dogmas of either religious or poli tical bigots, can be restrained by such conven tional forme. The day has gone by In which the abetters of secret, self constituted conclaves can impose upon the enlightened mind of the nap porters of common schools. It was a saying of Thomas Jefferson - that "error could be tolerated while reason was left free to combat it." But when reason and com mon sense are abandoned and resort is had to the expedient of the moment when emeriti shield ed by midnight darkness, bolts and ban imposed by irreligious end impious obligations, however specious the pretence, the rights of the people are amid' led and the perpetuity of our govern ment is endangered. The Republican party then is hailed as in ascending star, to guide our vessel to the haven of safety, when the storms of opposition may be hurled against us with impunity. 'Let every American, then, be aroused to a sense of his true position, and hurl from rim, as an unclean thing these- selfish dogmas, which demagogues alone concoct. Fearlessly step fqrth in defence of the freedom of mind and the free dom of scrim' as inalienable lights derived from the God who rules and governs the universe, and which we deny the power of man to abrdge an unit. Let the Republican party, then, be or prated, and the result, to my mind, Is as clear as a sunbeam--nch is the voice of Butler coun ty. Yours dcc. , Jarrell:sox. The ChaHeaton (8. C.) A/ovarytitus ticknowl, edges the unconstitutionality of the Fugitive Slave Law: "Of the action of Massachusetts in abrogation of the Fugitive Slave taw we hate no complaint to make. It was, from the first, • miserable illusion;. and worse, in fact—for it was an in fringement upon one of the most cherished peon. epples of the constitution. The constitution pro. vides that fugitives from labor, "upon demand, shall be delivered cp," but gives no power to Congress to act in the affair. Tho tenth amend ment to the constitution provides "that the pow ers not delegated to the United States are re. served to the States or to the people." The clause above confers no power, but is the naked declaration of a right, and the power not being conferred results to the States as one of the in c• Vents of sovereignty too dear to be trusted to the General Government. Our Southern mem bers strove for the passage of the law, ind strove honestly; but it shows the evils of our Unfortu. nate condition, that in the urgency °Tour con test with an aggressive adversary, we lose the landmarks of principle—to obtain an illusive triumph, we pressed the Government to assume a power not conferred by the instrument of its. creation, and to establish a precedent by. which; in all after times, it will be authorised to assume whatever right may have no constitutional organ of enforcement; and wearied with so many ef forts to confine the Government to the limits of its legitimate powers, wo are pleased to have-ser eintaree from another quarter, and if the ques tion shall be determined in her favor we will. sincerely rejoice in such a vindication of the constitution." A ID L.. . Us/4111'1 Weave led to understand from the above that the opinions of the editor of the Courier accord measurable with our own—viz: that the federal government has no right to have anything to do with slavery—that it la altogether a state lust'. tution. That the government had no right to enact the Fugitive Slave Law, and that it should be repealed, that it has no right to legislate or authorize slaveryln the territories, and there fore the Nebraska Kamm Bill should be repeal ed, yet we do not presume the Courier is an abolitionist eheet.—Wheetino Gazette. Tll.ll Attnlast MINISTiIt AT MADILID.—Mr. A. C.
