PITTSBURGH GAZETTE. FRIDAY MORNING,' APRIL 13. IBE6. The Nunnery Committee. Borrow , Tuesday, April 10, 1855. The Legislative Special Committee, appointed to investigate the charges against the Nunnery Committee, held an adjourned meeting at the State House this morning. At the opening of the meeting, the Chairman, Mr. Carpenter, of the Senate, stated that he was absent from the Sen ate Board at the time of his appointment on the Committee, and as he was a party directly inter ested in the investigation, he deemed it to be hie duty to decline Herring. which he should do on the opening of the Senate. He therefore called upon Mr. Griffin, of Charlestown, of the House, to take she chair. The Committee had summon ed the ladies connected with the School at Rox bury, one of whom, the Lady Superior, Mary AloYtlia, way present at the opening of the meet ing- The Lady Superior was accompanied by Samuel May, Esq., who stated that she had with her a statement of the transaction signed by live ladies who presided over the School. The Sergeant-at-Arms then -administered an oath to the Lady Superior, after which the statement was read by the Chairman of the Com mittee. - The statement is mainly the same as that pub lished in The Adnerriaer. The Committee then proceededhto w o u ndthtjy t est i fiedtia dinngdee as thatdthru°i examination fi e " : ° of the Lady Supe rior, hCommittee m m mi te t n t d e e c i nu th m e be nt re in d about their examination of the house; one of the Com mittee,. who gave his name am' Mr. Evans, tarried after the others had left, and told me he was once a Catholic in St. Mary's Church, Baltimore, and that he desired to return to the Church; he ailed me if I would'give him permission to visit me, saying he world like to have some pleasant coeversation with me; I declined giving him pekmission; he asked if the Bishop would object to his visiting me; I told him he would not, though we-received but few visitors; ho shook hands with me twice, and appeared very famil iar; I was much offended at his conduct then, and feel more indignant every time I think of it; I Lela the Committee when they entered the house that a lady was siolt; when the members of the Committee entered her chamber I was present; they bent so closely to her that she has since stated that she felt their bicattu I had previous ly desired the patient to remain quiet, as if asleep, if tht ommittee entered; while I was conducting, s p,„rt of the Committee, other mem hers of it were going about the house by them selves, examining the closets, sinks, &o.; I was not present when one of the gentlemen took hold of the rosary." Upon being asked if she could describe the gentleman who desired an interview with her, the. witness replied that she could not well de scribe, but that she could recognize him if she saw him. Mr. Evans, of the Senate. was then introduced; whereupon the witness said that he was not the gentleman who requested the interview, and who gave his name. Sabeequently Mr. Hiss of Boston, was introduced, when the witness said that was the gentleman who gave his name as Evans. The Lady Superior was then further questioned by Mr. Charted Hall, Jr., of the Advertiser, as to whether she had read the articles in the Adverti ser, and whether she regarded the statements therein as correct. The witness answered in the affirmative to those questions. Mr, Dawley, of the Senate Committee, then questioned the witness more particularly as to the conduct of the Committee on visiting the chapel. She stated the members of the Com mittee, to the number of ten, bad opened the door before she arrived. She had intended to have opened the door and admit the Committee, but the door was opened before she had time to do so, and there Were so many gentlemen about the door that she could not enter herself. While in the chapel the geutlemen were engaged in load conversation, which the considered very improper. The lady at her devodons in the chapel was startled when the gentlemen entered, and attempted to leave by a door which she found locked. One of the gentlemen asked her several questions which she declined answering in the chapel. The gentleman followed her without the chapel, when the conversation was resumed. Tan klibmosAitios or New Yona.—The New York correspondent of the Charleston Courier makes the followiug 121111ii01:1 of the millionaires of that city: Wm. B. Astor is our richest man; he inherited his wealth. Stephen Whitney, tivu MA110129: owes his fortune to speculations in cotton and the rise in real estate. W. H. Aspinwall, four million.; came of a rich family, and gained vast increase of wealth in the shipping business.— James Lenox, three millions, which he inherited. The late Peter Harmony, two millions; came to 'this city as a cabin boy, and grew rich by com merce. The Lorillards, two millions; came from Franco poor, and made their huge fortune in the tobacco and snuff business. The late Anson G. Phelps, two millions; learned the trade of a tip per, and made a fortune in iron and copper.— Alexander D. Stewart, two millions, now of the dry goods palace; began business in a little fan cy store. Of those who are put down for a mil lion and a half, Geo. Law began life as a farm laborer, CornelivalTimderbilt as a boatman, John Lafarge as etteard to-Joseph Bonaparte. Of tho millionaires, James Cliesterman began life as a journeyman tailor, and: Peter Cooper as a glue maker. George Bancroft, llenryJames, , Professor Anthem, Thomas MeElrath and Dr. Francis, are each stated to possess a hundred thousand dollars. Edwin Forrest is rated a quarter of a million; so is Sidney E. Morse, of the New York Observer. William Niblo, it ap.. petits, has four hundred thotuend dollars; and Dr. Mott two hundred thonsand. Barnum input down at eight hundred thousand; Bennett atone hundred and' fifty thousand. But perhaps the most remarkable statement of all is, that Mrs. Okill, of New York, has made a quarter of a million dollars by keeping school Tun RAID ON KANDAS.--Chizens of the Free States! Bead the following which we extract from the Missouri Daily Monocrat, (Benton,) of the 7th inst., published in St. Louts: ' Ma. a:renames famstris.—Events 'now devel oping authorise us te'speak of things well known before, b_t hardly ;erodible to the public until they arrive at that point when "feeling" is "knowing," and when "seeing" Is "Idiering." Atchison's desertion of his seat last winter was a derelictlov of du'y which surprised people on til it could be accounted for. ,o eocure his re election by trade with the Know Nothings was one of his well-known objects; but be had others, shrewdly suspected, but now proved.— The first was to stimulate a crusade of voters in Missouri to vote in the Territorial election in Kansas, and to this object be applied himself with so much zeal as to excite many thousands Of people to cross over into Kansas, inflaming all the time the greatest possible animosity against all settlers from the Free States. That was one of his objects, and hie success in it is shown by the numbers that crossed into Kansas, armed, and exasperated, and then cattle back from the Territorial election triumphing as if they bad gained a victory in a great Indian battle. The second of his objects la now known to be, to get ell the whip in the Inflamed counties to give in structions to their representatives to vote for him • for Senator when the Legislature meets next fall. The same four or five thousand who bare gone to Kansas to vote, and{ then returned to Missouri, are expected to give the instructions, thus exercising the political rights of citizens under two different gureniments at the same time. By these contrivances be expects to gov ern elections in Kansas and Missouri with the same set of men. OUR SLIM COISACIII.—Too silver contained in the gold from California is not included in the statement made bytbe United States Mint, of the amount of the gold deposites from the State. During the last year the sum purchased was $5 - 494,839.02, and the silver coins issued amounted to $8,619,270. The earn issued of silver coins at the reduced standard weight, authorized by the act, before mentioned, is es follows:—In 1859, $8,654,161;, in 1854, sB,6l9,27omaking a . total of $17;279,421 of tliehalf dollar and lower denominations struck, distributed and put into circulation, except 'the stun of $584,808.23 in the treasury of the mint and ready for . distribu• tion and cinulation. llotisry Lawn APPLICArrA.—There is no di minution in the number hi applications tinder the bowaty land act of 3larf ! 1, 11355, the mail Of Mondiy, being the largest last lass as yet been received in one day. We are at aberration prices in breadstutrs as well as in meat. We obeli have a famine if we do not look out— The nations of Europeare engaged in the amiable business of butchering one another, and if the half dozen gentlemen at Vienna and their back ers do not come to terms, this state of thingi will continue, and perhaps for half a dosen seasons. The fertile plains of that continent, instead of being used for producing what will feed ite popu lation, will be the scenes of havoc and bloodshed, l Death alone will reap a harveat•therefrom. lf, in addition, the crops in the island of Great Britain should be cut short, (and it must be , re membered they Were abundant last year,) it will be left to the valley cf the Mississippi, mainly, to supply the immense vacuum abroad. Under such circumstances, the drain upon no for foreign consumption is likely to be greater than it has ever been before. Our presentreserves of.bread stuffs must be very light, as the high prices of corn and flour plainly enough denote. Our corn crop last year was wonderfully small;:as - was wel estab'ished at harvest time,-Without aid from the: prices current. Enteringupon the year with exhausted grana ries at home, with a poor crop following, and an ImmenseEnropean demand, grave apprehension may well be excited as to our circumstances a year hence. We have hada hard winter and enormously high prices throughout But what is all we have seen to what we shall see, if we should chance to .have a bad summer, and the war goes on in Europe? We may then see suf fering and starvation in earnest. It is in view of this not merely possible, but too probable state of things, that we invoke the attention of farmers everywhere, in the East as ' well as the West, to omit no effort or opportuni ty to swell, in large and in small quantitida,, the product of the soil the coming year.—N. Y. Trib. Tue 861.1/ CIIIIATEB---Scratchlng hens are s nuisance which a Yankee proposes to abate by an invention, properly enough termed a "lien walker," of which the following account is given: It consists cf a email instrument somewhat resembling a very long spur, attached to the hind part of the hen's leg. The instrument ism arranged that when the hen is about to scratch the earth, the spur catches' in the ground before her foot has rarely descended, and obliges her to bring the foot down quietly and harmlessly a little in front of the place which she boa aimed at. The hen thereupon tries the other foot, with a like result. She keeps on trying, and ho fore she ix aware of it the machine bee walked her right out of the garden! W HAT Sons Fass Ear.—A keeper of a branch in the short market, New York, had a hearing before a instice, on the charge of selling "plated veal." the testimony showed what plated veal is. A witness said: " I mean by plated veal, patting a piece of fat pork where the kidney ought to be ; if the whole of these ninetinarters werefried out, after taking away the poik, enough fat could not be got out to grease a jack-knife; butchers call *this "bob veal;" .I have been a butcher for 40 years; I consider this meat very unwholesome; it was very young, and had been starved either hero, or while it was being brought here; there was not a particle — of fat about it, and but very little meat on the bones, and I consider what there was very unwholesome."
