Paper The press of the country, generally, Is full o congrairffatioMs that our foreign imports haref fallen off, and the exports of gold ceased. They predicate on these facts a conviction that times will grow better, and attribute to the reck.ess importations of the past year the derangements which lone been experienced. This is the view of the Democratic as well as the Whig press; and our free trade cotemporarles are unanimous in the idea that if we restrain our foreign ruche aes within certain limits we shall be able to get along well enough. - So far so good. Our Democratic friends are undoubtedly' wise in taking this view of things. The facts clearly warrant such a conclusion. We have been importing too much—more than we are able to pay for, and the drain of gold to make up for our deficiences of produie exports, lies at thetOttom of our monetary troubles. 'And UDW, if it is a wise thing not to import too much, and an imprudent thing to buy too freely abroad, is if not the dictate of common sense ta,ereet a legal barrier again , t ,icr-int portatlons—to enact such . a tariff as will keep out a superabundance of foreign wares? It straw' us so. If It is right that the people should - . be s law onto themselves, and resolve not to ini .,;perrt beyond such and such is limit, why not make 'a -law for themselves, in their legislative capaci ty t ß that Will have that effect in its operations? *.Wit4emnot see why men should prate about free tet4 and revenue tariffs, and then rejoice when circumstances have compelled us to do what an incidentally protective tariff would have done for un Better to have the bulwark we need, against over-importations, in the form of a law, than de pend upon the chance one resulting from the ea , amnsted resources of the people. We want a revenue law that will operate as a check upon our importations. so that we may keep our re- . sources at home, and not that kind of check which is enacted by our empty pockets. We' commend this view to such of our Demo cratic friends as have been anti-tariff. Is it not better to bring our importations within the scope of ours means, systematically and through th workings of a tariff, bw,.than to leave the door open to the first wild impulse of speculation and excess that may seite__upon the commercial world? -- Commonos.—ln the communication publish ed yesterday of the exercises at the Elisabeth Female. Bury Day—Anti-Snow Nothing Caucus of Senators—Pacific-Railroad Lost—Anti-Nebras kaism—Frauds in the Indian Department—Se ' riots - Charges—Resolutions of Inquiry. . , This has been a highly interesting day in both Houses of Congreas. The regular opening of the Senate was preceeded by a secret Democrat ic linens, devoted to the task of crashing oat -the Know Nothings. it is said that from* twenty to twenty-five Senators took part in the secret movement: They bad a lively discussion, but .-._ came to no definite resolution. • The caucus was adjourned until another day. A want of Infos niation as to the real state of the party, in its relations to Know Nothingism, and a want of confidence in one. another operated upon the persons present to postpone decisive action. If they ascertain that the know Nothings are too Weak to require conciliation, a strong address, full of lovefor our adopted brethren and of do immolation for all the open and secret enemies of the same, will belsaned, and the foreigners will ,be assured of the distinguished and still amen, ted consideration of the Democracy. If, on the contrsui, the returns from the local committees shall prove that -hostility :to the political privi, leges now enjoyed by foreigners has obtained too deep a root among the masses to be eradicat ed, the address will advocate a compromise, and re ., commend great. mo but yet vigilance aco . . Reeves, deceased, which shows that the value of this property in Western Missouri is even greater than it is Virginia or Maryland. The average price of slaves, as indicated.by this sale, is s&..b, while, in the States to which we Teter, it scarcely amounts to $BOO. This fact is significant for more reasons than one. Ray I County, in which those sales have taken place, is but a short distance frow Kansas Territory—so short, indeed, that there can be no materialdif- Iprance either in the soil, the climate, or the pro ductions of.the two sections of country. Iv hat, therefore, applies to slave labor in Ray Connty, I applies in an equal degree to slave- labor in the Territory in Kansas." Ray County is on the north side of the Mis souri River, and the third County from the Terri- tory of Kansas. The logic of the "Sentinel" is invincible, and the conclusion to which it joyously arrives is ir resistible. If -Slavery, as indicated by the in fallible test of the market price of slaves, is, to a 'marked degree prosperous and profitable in the western counties of Miasouri,it must be equal ly so in Kansas, where the circumstances of soil and climate and productions are identical. Sla very, therefore, will go into Kansas, the legal barrier to its admission being removed, and- an enormous expansion be thereby given to an insti tution which insures pOlitical power to the South, and confines free labor to colder and compara tively sterile regions. Some of the Northern politicians, by whose direct encouragement, or equally effective acqui escence, Kansas has been opened to Slavery, profess to be surprised and disappointed by what is happening there. The poor, deluded inno cents, if we will be kind enough to believe them. really never apprehended that Slavery could ex ist in Kansas! They knew it existed in Mary land, Virginia and ;Missouri, in latitudes quite to the north of a large portion of Kansas. They knew it was in full vigor in Missouri, immedi ately on the borders of Kansas. They knew, as a matter of history, that it was kept out of Indi ana and Illinois, only by the positive and perso venng interdiction of Congress. Still, they be lieved that the South, in moving Heaven and- Earth to abrogate tire :Missouri Compromise, ex pected no practical benefits from the abrogation, I but was only contending for what has been call ed a principle.—N. N. Tribune. Tag STOEM ar Bat TIMORE.—ABout 12 o'clock last night, the wind suddenly changed to the southwest, and blew a perfect hurricane, accom panied by udeltro of rain, heavy peals of thun der, and vivid gashes of lightning, which contin , ned at intervals till near day-light. It was the most awful and destructive storm that has visi ted this latitude for a great number of years.— Four sthooners were capsized and sunk at' the I County wharf, at the foot of Broadway. Further down towards Canton, the destruction was still greater. At the vrilehouse wharf six schooners were sunk, and severalio badly in jarecl by being knocked against each other, that they have been rendered almost useless. A brig, name unknown, at anchor in the stream, parted her cables and went down. Between,Canton and the Fort four schooners at anchor upon the Middle 13rount were capsiz ed, and it is said that the crews of two of them, consisting of.nizie persona, were drowned. We fear the report is too true_ Individuals -were cu r gaged this morning in endeavoring to raise the vessel and 'recover the bodies,-but np-M92 clock, the names of the schooners were net even known. Further down Canton, towards the old race course, great destruction has takes place. The most of the wharves were swept entire ly of their contents. The destruction about town by the blowing down of chimnies, unroofing of houses, La.,has been great. The large ware house of Messrs. Hayward A; Barlett, on Light street, was completely unroofed, as was also new three story brick house on Ann street, near Baltimore street. Locust Point came in for its share of damage. Mr. Cooper's St. Charles Ho tel suffered Considerably, as well as several ware houses in the immediate neighborhood. At this time, no estimate can be made of the loss, but it will be immense. We shall doubtless hear of much damage to shipping in the bay, if not loss oT life.—Ball. Pat. Jan. 22. Bishop. Reza, it is well known, is a citizen of Michigan, and is in con finement in some dungeon in Rome. Although the United States Congress has called for his re lease, he is still imprisoned. The old settlers of Detroit, who knew the man, have petitioned in vain for his release. The Papal authorities at Rome have invariably turned a deaf ear to all such requests, whether- they came from the U: EL representative at Rome, or from our citizens. CRIMES AND CANDALITIES or 1854 —We find in our exchariges tabular statements of the crimes and casualities in the United States during the year which has just closed. The footings-up are as followi:—The total amount of property des troyed by fire is estimated, in round numbers at twenty five millions dollars. The number of per sons whose lives have been sacrificed by burntng buildings is put down at one hundredand seventy ; one. There have been one hundred and ninety throe Railroad accidents, killing one hundred and eighty-eix persons, •and wounding five hundred and eighty-nine. There have also been forty eight steamboat accidents, killing five hundred and eighty-seven persons, and wounding two hundred and twenty-five. During the year six hundred nod eighty-two murders were commit ted, and eighty-four persons were executed.
