Adjourned. Slavery In Knnsns It Is known to everybody that Slavery exists in Missouri, but it may not be known to every body that it is most prosperous, powerful and active in precisely that part of Missouri from which itninfluenee over Kansas can be exerted most directly and effectively. The population, dtstinguishing free from slave, of the the six contiguous counties on- the Missouri, three north and throe south of that river, commencing on the line of Kansas where the Missouri makes its great bend and enters the State of Missouri, as returned in the census of 1850, was as follows : Counties. Free. Slave. Platte 4,047 2,793 Clay 7,580 2,742 Ray .1 R 59 1,514 Jackson Lafayette Saline . In these six counties, therefore, the slaves constitute nearly twenty-three end one-halt per cent. of the population; whereas, they do not constitute quite thirteen per cent of the popula tion of the whole State of M11,40111i. Slavery, then, following the Missouri River, the natural, and until lately, the only channel of tianspor tation; has traveled westward, partly under the attraction of the fertile lands bordering upon Kansas, and partly to avoid the tendency of the. .alaves to escape into Illinois when left in the Eastern counties. in no part of the Union is shivery more profit able, and fa no part of the Union do slaves bring mo in the market, either to sell or hire, than in the six counties whose population is given above. The schedule of rates at which slaves are hired out there, by the letter recently pub lished by Gen. Soingfellow, must make the mouths of the Virginia slaveholders absolutely water. Men from $lBO to $250 Women from $OO to $lOO per annum. Girls from ten to thirteen years of age, from $4O to SCO per annutn--"the hirer paying all expenses, and losing all time of sickness." Such are the ordinary rates, as testified to by Gen Stringfel low. Be himself is actually paying still higher, viri $96 per annum fora slave girl of ten years of age. Ten millions of dollars are a low estimate for the value of the slave property in these eix coun ties. That such an interest, so powerful, sepa rated from Kansas only by an imaginary line, and always so acutely sensitive to the instinct of self-preservation, most act upon the new Terri tory witkprodigioas Como, was inevitable.—N. Y. Traune. Foni WAYNE AND 0111:A150 RAILROAD.—We give in another column, the report of thy Chief Engineer of this road, .1. L. Williams, Esq., who states very lucidly, and we think very Correctly, the route, objects, connections, and prospective value of the above work. We believe his state ments may be implicitly relied on. Ho has, for more than twenty years, been a resident of In dians, and for many years Chief Engineer of the Wanash and Erie Canal, a position which he still bolds, and in which he has earned the reputa tion of a skillful engineer, R man of Sound judg ment, and of accomplishing work in the most ju dicious and , scmiomical manner. The total length of the Food Is` 147 miles. The total cost, covering a full equipment, is esti mated at $3,143,448, or 21,384 per mile. The stooks subscription obtained amounts to $1,625,- 893,0 f which $1,'205,788 have been paid. Fur ther subscriptions to the extent of about $400,- 000, are expected from Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and from parties on the lino of the road. The total amount expended on the work up to the let of November, 1854. eras $1,100,000. The company have made an issue of mortgage bonds to the amount of $4,250,000,- about one half of which have been sold. The lino of the road is a very important one, as has been shown in the report referred to. We can assure all interested that the , road will be built in a most faithful anti economical manner, and we can see no reason why it should not prove an excellent investment. It must form the great artery between Central Ohio and the roads . en tering it from the East, (among which are the great Philadelphia and Baltimore lines,) anti Chi cago. For the greater part of the distance, it traverses an excellent agricultural section, which must supply the usual amount - of local business. Theliork Is In competent and efficient hands, and will he vigorously_pushed forward, even in these times, to completion.—Amrrican Railroad 'Journal. • _ A Ray Sronr.—ln a paragtropn concerning the high tide of Thursday, the Boston Telegraph re cords the following : "A; the wharves, owing to the high water, a large number of rats were. killed by unemployed laborers. The vermin were obliged to leave their holes, or remain and - Vel drowned, and as they appeared, parties of Irishmen waiting for jobs chased them about the docks with clubs and stones. In one instance the men had driven two large rats into an empty building on Commercial street, where there was no mode of ogress, ex cept through the door. This the two men fasten ed, and forming a circle, drove the animals into a corner and prepared to despatch them. The rats rendereddesperate, sprang at the throat of, the nearest Irishman, and one eucceded in fee - toning his long sharp teeth in the man's hand kerchief, and held his jaws firmly clasped un- . til killed- Luckily the handkerchief was thick, so that the animal's teeth did not touch the man's throat. The rat's companion sprang at his intended victim, missed hint, and was knocked over by a club. They were enormous large fel lows, and would have made a dinner for half a dosen Chinamen." Ileehaulenl I design writing several communications on the subject of the various mechanical appliances now used in the cure of numerous diseases de- Pending on a relaxed and weakened condition of the human body; and a consequent weakness of many of its organs, and an impaired action of many of the functions, necessary to health and longevity. It is well known to every one that the mechanism of the great human machine was never designed to get out of order, as it is equally well known, that from accident, or oth er causes, it often is so; showing, as Dr. Ban ning has justly remarked in his "common sane," that -'it is not the steam but the disturbed and broken engine! that is at fault:". The use of medicines internally, or in other words, material for increasing the steam, in these kind of cases is only a waste of menus, so long as the weak ened power of the organ intended to be acted on exists. Let us state some of the most common diseases arising from weakened organs and see if the proper applications will not be benefiLal. These appliances are all outward, and are in tended to aid the weakened parts in the same way as a splint does a broken leg or arm; mere ly by sustaining it until it regains its fall pow ers. They consist of Body Braces or Support ers, Shoulder Braces, Elastic Stockings, and Trusses, the use of the latter is known to nearly every person, as the disease for which they are used, rupture, has become very rife, and it is computed to afflict one out of about every ten of the civilised world. It is a disease, however, much more common in men than women. .1 have lately brought_ from the eastern manufacto ries every variety of Truss, both for the relief and cure of rupture; among which is "Marsh's Radical Cure Truss," which will cure morit oases of reducable hernia or rupture in about six months. I have also a light French Truss that does not weigh over two and a half ounces.— These are a very comfortable Truss, but rarely if ever effect a radical cure.„ The body Grace, or supporter, is intended to relieve that dragging condition of the abdomen which allows a dis placement of nearly all the largo Internal or gans, the liver, - lungs, stomach and heart, are main ones, and in fact a real healthy condition cannot exist after such displacement takes place. These organs are important ones—the liver be ing the largest in the human body. They are held to their places by means of spinal attach ments, or ligaments auvended from within, and by the support of the broad muscles of the ab domen from without. Now it will be readily seen how important it is, when relaxation and debility ensues, from whatever cause, that these broad muscles be sustained in their places by lat eral or outward props, thereby hindering the sinking from their proper place the organs abriire named, and also preventing a vast train of diseases of debility, both nervous and mus cular, among which may be enumerated liver complaint, dyspepsia, costivness, prolapm ute— ri. and the various chronic, lung and bronchial affections, for which. all the expectorants, blue pills, and the most powerful astringents are use less without these outward supports. I have pursued this subject already further than I in tended, and will now conclude, and take up the. shoulder braces and other mechanical remedies at another time. Oho. lI KEyern, No. 740 Wood street., &MUM ON SUNDAY NIOUT.—The Atlantic coast was visited with a fearful storm on Sunday night. The Philadelphia Ledger myth "Tux GREAT Ittow.—,The storm on Sunday night was the most severe that has happened in this quarter for many a day. The wind blew a hurricane all night, and the damage has been extensive, the particulars of which will be found in another column. The gusts of Willa were par ticularly severe on the telegraph lines about the country." The News of the same city says: "Our city was visited, on Sunday night and early on Monday morning, by la most severe storm of wind, which did considerable damage in various parts of the city, and amour the smell craft on the Delaware. Daring the day, the the wind had been blowing from the northeast, and suddenly shifting eastwardly, it before mid night began to blow a hurricane. Fur some hours it continued to increase in violence, and at its height was perfectly terrific. Signs were blown down in all directions, awning posts were snapped off like pipe stems; trees were uprooted, and large buildings were levelled with the ground. During the ( greater portion of the time that the wind was at its height, the rain descended in floods, making the streets almostimpassible. Coming from the east, the eastern portion cf city suffered the most, the small v es sels in the Delaware being unable to live in the sea that woe made. No less than eleven oyster-boats were swamped, besides a large number of other vessels." A dispatch from Now York says "The most violent storm of wind and rain prevailed here during the night, doing much damage to the fences, awnings, Sc., but as yet we hear of nothing seriews. It is feared wo shall hear of disasters at sea. The brig General Marion, bound to Easton, with coal, is mthore at Fire Place Lick. Vessel and cargo will prove a total loss. Owing to the violentstorm, telegraph ing has been materially interrupted in all direc tions." The wind storm in the west was severe, and the boats on the Ohio experienced considerable trouble and peril. The Cincinnati Commercial of Tuesday sari "Thc wind blow a perfect tornado from the west. All the boats at the leve6 were blown stern up, parting everything in the shape of a cable save bow-lines. None of the regular pack ets had arrived up to noon of Monday. The Pennsylvania arrivrd from Pittsburgh about three P. M. Capt. iClinefolter says he has steam boated for over fourteen years, and never before 'laid to' when bound 'down stream' for wind." 01.110 AND INDIANA RAILROAD. -At a meeting of the stockholders, heldat Bucyrus on the 10th inst. the following wore elected directors for the ensuing year.—Wm.
