DESTRUCTION or run STEAMER. MAT QUEF.N. —The steamer May Queen was burned to the water's edge yesterday afternoon, at about six! o'clock, while returning from an excursion, and when off Cedar Grove, on the ocean side of Sta- ; ten Island. She had been to Eeyport with two barges in tow, having passengers on board to the number - of thirteen hundred, members of the Brooklyn and Staten Island Young Men's Catho- 1 olic Association rod their friends. Everything passed off delightfully during the day, up to the ! moment of the casualty. When they were op- i posite Cedar Grove the steamer took fire in the ! engine-room, and the cry of .. , Fire" rang through the boot with terror, and echoed from blanched lips. A fearful panic seized dose on board, and indescribable confusion ensued. The memory of some of the fearful catastrophies of the past two or three years caused the courage of many to fail, while it nerved those who were composed to greater efforts. The officers of the May Queen ! exerted themselves nobly. All on board the steamer were hurried on to the barges, and the barges were cut loose at a point where th.y were driven ashore - in four feet of water, which enabled them to land on Staten Island. All of the small boats on Staten Island in the vicinity of the burning vessel immediately put out to the rescue of those on board. The steamers Nor walk and Sylph also went to. her aid, but their assistance was not required. The Norwalk sent her small boats to their aid. At the time the Norwalk reached her there were no less than 400 of the passengers of the May Queen in the water making their way to the shore. Fortu nately all of them were saved and safely landed on Staten Island, whence they reached this city by the boats of Staten Wand ferries. The May Queen has been .built about three yearn, and has in her the same engine which was in the Trojan, which was burned about three years ago.—.Y. Y. Tribune.
