From thetbuinnstiOszetta Corn, Crow-rlts. DtpAisuitloss, itad Probable It is now the 10th of August; and three-fourths of the cornfields in the country are drooping under the effects of the continued drought ; the tope in many cases driedpp, and the ear'net properly (tiled; There is; in fact, for the first time in many years, . a prospect of a . large dimi nution in the corn crap. Many persons think not half a crop will be raised; others that there will be a loss of one-fourth ; 1a any erent, after incasing allowance for forthcoming rain, and a late season; there must be a short crop of corn. What will. be 'the effect of this on the general Commerce in grain and antin t sl food? We know both the production and export of the United States; and from these may draw some concha stop, as-to'the probable effect of a giren diminu tion of tbo crop. Let us examine the question, as to the On great - corn Slates of the.Ohle Val ley. .We will suppose the loss is _only 20 per cent. of an average crop, which is below the es timate of most farmers. The crop of. 1849 was just about an avenge crop ; and that we hi 4 7o bethe census of 1850' Thus Ohio.. 59,078,695 bush. Indiana. 52,964,3113 Illinois_ " KentsiEky.l - 58,672,591 " Tennessee 52,276,223 D. DlC;il.lri a Cu Aggregate.... .......... —280,630,857 Now, 20 per cent on this amount is fifty-sir million/1y busnels; which is to be deducted from the average amount fed to animals, or made into IVhiske.y. Now this fifty-nix millions of bushels, is to bo Wean off from one or all, of the follow ing mode:icor consumption, ♦in from tho export of corn and meal, or the amount fed to angle or bogs, or made into Whisky. l'he average exports of Indian corn and meal do not exceed 15,000,000 bushels, and seldom in deed make that. If we suppose the Whole of this cut off by a short crop, we will still have forly, one millions, to be taken from other sources of consumption. Now, it we tempose this to De equally divided between thefattingef cattle, and togs, and the making of whiskey, we haie this falling off ; estimating at the ordinary rates of consumption of corn, in these processes: Cattle 300,000 Bogs 700,000 {Vhimhy 500,000 bbke. At fin: eight, this is an enormous amount to be eubducted from these articles of commerce. But a little examination will show that each re. multi moat 'follow from a Ecrioas falling off In the cora crop. It will be observed -that the great mass of corn is fed to winter stack, not for fat tening, but to preserve them. There are horses, mules. cattle, hogs, to the amount of many mil lions, to be sustained. When, therefore, a hea vy deduction is made from the corn crop, it falls almost entirely on the amount to be sent to mar ket, in one Dann or soother. It is the sarplus, only, after supplying all dommtio wants, which goes into the manufacture of liquor, or the fat tening of swine, or foreign export. . When a crop venially falls, therefore, the deduction falls first an these marketable articles.' But the diatribe ' don of the reduction will probably ho a little flit ! Terence from that above. The manufazture, of whiskey seldom ceases; and the largest part of - the reduction will be found in tattle and bogs. If the failure of the torn crop.be no large as we suppose, there will be a redaction of 1,000,000 in the numberof fat tened hogs in the United States; and of enttle in proportion. The number ur hop fattened in the eat, aocording_to 'the Carrell:, (allowing • small quantities ~net returned,) nearly or .quite 2,500,W. in the United States at large, the number must exceed 2,000,000. A reduction of 1,000,000 is therefore equiva lent to a reduction of one-lAird, in the total com ber of fattened hopn'end there will bee proper tlenal reduction in fatted cattle. • One effect of this will be, that there will be lit tle or no export. There cannot be an export, without at once raising the price, beyond srhat meat can be exported at. Whetherpires at hoine will be much higher, depends upon various mr cumstanees. At present, the price of stock hog. la low. There is therefore, a margin for a high er price of corn, without raising the price of fat hogs: Monty is aim scarce; no that the scarci ty of corn, will be counteracted as to the price of hop, by two other material circumstances. Of one thing, however, there Is a certainty; that the reduction in the quantity of corn, will reduce, In the ensuing year, my materially, the Nasality of plekleimeate In the country. When corn and money are both abundant, the number. of fatted animals brought to market, may be in, creased almost Indefinitely. But when torn and money are bOth scarce, the reverse is the case; and fatted animals are scarce also. Let is eeehow Many hogs there are In the Valley of the Ohio, and how many might be fat ted. The number hue rapidly increased since 1858; but,let us take the number for tent year: In Tennessee, 3,104,800 InNentucky, ' • 2,891;163 In Indians, ' ' 2,208,7:6 In Ohio, . 1 1 {964;770 In: Illinois 910,807:. Aggregate, .. .. .. . .... Now an hogs multiply with great rapidity, and come fo maturity in two years, it would-be quite polable to fat anitillsmghter-em• millions of hogs in the Talley of Ohio in. one year. If the mar ket were kept up, and corn enough:in the coon - - try, It would be done, for there would be both the temptation and the means. - •But,•the fatten• . ing of eat millions of begs , ' would require one Amaral , and twenty millions of bushels of corn, , and there Serer Is that amount to spare for that 'object.
