Uoth of the visiting clergy men are very promi nent In Wales and nro lnown personality to thousands of Welsh men throughout this region. Itcv. .lonea spent the early years of his life delving In the coal mines. Whllo li youth he was an ardent stu dent, and won renown as a reciter, afterward ns a writer of verse and prose In the '' REV. AVclsh and the de nominational periodicals. Possessed of a voice that Is powerful, resonant, and sweet, his own predilections and the advlco of his friends for some years di rected much of his energies In the di rection of vocal music. Aflor a time, Influenced by the desires of the Ttev. II. W. Hughes, one of his predecessors In the pastorate of Belhanla. he deter mined to devote himsplf to the work of the ministry and commenced lo preach at Dlnas, Ilhondda valley. He after wards held pastorates at Stayllttle, DyllfHU, Herthluyd, Glam; Troedyrhlw, Merthyr and Maesteg. A typical Celt in build and feature, he possesses also In large measure the Celtic gifts of fire, energy and eloquence and every de partment of the work of his church Is quickened by the earnest, almost pas sionate, energy brought to bear by the pastor. Mr. Jones appears to have as his type of what a Christian minister .should be that laid down succinctly by the Apostle "to be all tilings tei all men." In church matters and In secu lar concerns he is the leader, friend, and adviser of his people, possessing n knowledge of men and things that have rendered him popular in u circle far wider thnn that of his church.
