Merthyr and Maesteg. A typical Celt
in build and feature, he possesses also
In large measure the Celtic gifts of fire,
energy and eloquence and every de
partment of the work of his church Is
quickened by the earnest, almost pas
sionate, energy brought to bear by the
pastor. Mr. Jones appears to have as
his type of what a Christian minister
.should be that laid down succinctly by
the Apostle "to be all tilings tei all
men." In church matters and In secu
lar concerns he is the leader, friend,
and adviser of his people, possessing n
knowledge of men and things that have
rendered him popular in u circle far
wider thnn that of his church.
Ttev. Morris. V. It. G. S., pastor of
the Noddfa Baptist church, Tieorchy,
Houtti AVales, it In the lirst rank of
Wales' noted preachers. Ho was edu
cated at Ponty pool follrgc and was
orclnincd at Noddfa thirty-four years
ago. The church then was small, but
today Is one of the largest and most
Inlluentlnl churches of the principality
and modern In all its equipments. Mr.
Morris has been the secretary of the
Baptist union of Wales for twenty
years, and last year, when he resigned
the secretaryship, he was honored with
the presidency of that great body. He
has taken profound Interest In educa
tional matters for more than a quar
ter of a century. He is the president
of one of the largest and wealthiest
school boards In Wales, and nlso a
member of the Federation of School
Boards of England and Wales, and he
monies on this visit highly recom
mended by thnt body to all educators
in this country.
While In this country, he will thor
oughly eximlnc the public school sys
tem, academies, colleges and unlersl
tle.. Hp Intends to go as far West
as Chicago, and will return home about
the first of July.
A Doctor of Philosophy.
The Hew James Hughes, uustor of
the New York Street Presbyterian
church, has just hud conferred upon
him the degree or doctor of philosophy
by the Kansas Xormnl college. Dr.
Hughes has been more thnn thirty
years In the work of the Master. Dur
ing thut time he 1ms built three
churched, and while a missionary In
Africa secured from the Into Cecil
miotics nine thousand acres of hind for
his mission woik. He has delivered
many lectures on his tour's of the old
world and more especially his experi
ences in South Africa. Always Inter
.stlng as a lecturer or preacher, the
people are delighted to hear him.
Ho Is nu author of some nolo. Ills
ntest work, "The Land of Gold and
Diamonds, or Ten Years in South
Africa." Is a charming volume to read,
Ills work ns missionary, teacher and
lecturer received the endorsement of the
Into Hnn. W. C, Gladstone, the illustri
ous, BriUMi statesman. The honor Is
worthily bebtowed, and wo extend to
'Dr. Hughes congratulations.
