THE MARSHAL OF Fit AXCE.—General Niel, created Marshal of France, for his brilliant ser vices on the Mind°, is, accordiag to a writer in one of the Paris papers, not more than fifty-seven years old, and looks muoh younger. He was a student of the polytechnic school, which he quit ted to study engineering at Metz. His early pro motii,n was not extremely rapid. We find him a lieutenant of engineers in 1827; he became a captain in 1535, and gained his chef de batal lion's epaulet on the held of battle of Constan tine (`1837). He was made a colonel in 1845, and with that rank he took part in the expedition to Home in 1819 as head of the engineer's staff. While at Itouae he was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general, and shortly afterwards was charged with the mission of carrying the keys of the city to the Pope a t it Rata. Oa his return to France he became a member of the Superior Committees of Engineering and For tifications, and was appointed director of the engi neering department in the Ministry of War, and Counsellor of State on extraordinary service. As a general of division he commanded the engineers in the Eiltio, and took parr in the siege of Bomar sand. Subsequently he commanded the engineers in the Crimea. His reputation as a scientific offi cer has always stood remarkably high. 11e is a tall, hardsome man, and very distingue in his appearance and manners. It will be remembered that he was cleated in January last to go to Turin to make the official demand of the Yrincen Clo tilde's hand for Prince Napoleon.
