THE MARSHAL OF Fit AXCE.—General Niel,
created Marshal of France, for his brilliant ser
vices on the Mind°, is, accordiag to a writer in
one of the Paris papers, not more than fifty-seven
years old, and looks muoh younger. He was a
student of the polytechnic school, which he quit
ted to study engineering at Metz. His early pro
motii,n was not extremely rapid. We find him a
lieutenant of engineers in 1827; he became a
captain in 1535, and gained his chef de batal
lion's epaulet on the held of battle of Constan
tine (`1837). He was made a colonel in 1845, and
with that rank he took part in the expedition to
Home in 1819 as head of the engineer's staff.
While at Itouae he was promoted to the rank of
brigadier-general, and shortly afterwards was
charged with the mission of carrying the keys of
the city to the Pope a t it Rata.
Oa his return to France he became a member of
the Superior Committees of Engineering and For
tifications, and was appointed director of the engi
neering department in the Ministry of War, and
Counsellor of State on extraordinary service. As
a general of division he commanded the engineers
in the Eiltio, and took parr in the siege of Bomar
sand. Subsequently he commanded the engineers
in the Crimea. His reputation as a scientific offi
cer has always stood remarkably high. 11e is a
tall, hardsome man, and very distingue in his
appearance and manners. It will be remembered
that he was cleated in January last to go to Turin
to make the official demand of the Yrincen Clo
tilde's hand for Prince Napoleon.

PHILADRLPHU, July 14, 1869
The stock market remains without change of import
ance. Reading Railroad shares seem to be loiking up
a little, in anticipation of a fair statement on the first
of August. Pennsylvania Rail r oad shares are an eighth
of a dollar per share lower. State fives also declined

These commenced yesterday with boots and shoes, and

was all disposed of. The carpeting sale commences to.

matter in charge are a warranty that everythiog will

continuation of the enterprise, and the, in this wey,
Boston wil+ have taken a permanent step towinds re
covering and retaining the business to which she
would seem to be legitimately entitled.
" It will be seen that our city authorities have made
art aogementa to make the sojourn of merchants from
other cities pleasant; it is to be hoped that these will
prove agreeable to them, and that our friends front
abroad will leave not only with bargains as printable to
themselves as to sellers, but with impressions to the
advantage of Boston. and with the conviction that it
will be .or their interest to renew their visit in fu
ture."
One of our correspondents asks the old question, why
we do not prabli.le the list of arrivals at all the hgtele
Newspaper proprietors and reportsre, anxious to do
everything in their power to accommodate and asset
the business men of the city, have again and again en
deavored to persuade the proprietors of those hotels
whose arrivals do not appear amo - g the printed lists,
to furnish them to the reporters, but without success.
Their reasons for the re'usal it would be difficult to
tell. There are but three or four, yet these keep the
lists incomplete, and of much less use than they other
wise might bec9ne.
We respectfully submit this etilk.ct to the coneidera•
tioo or the Board or Trade. It may be that a imitable
committee from that body, waiting ureic' the hotel pro
prietors alluded to, would have better success In repro
alntitug to them the importance of reconsidering their
decision on this point, than the emissaries of the preen
have had. At all events, the subject is weighty enough
to warrant a trial. We have done our beet for the
merchants with but r.rtial mecum. Let them appoint
a GCAUCUittaa to Argo the propriety of arquieceencein the
