TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1858 About People.—No. 2. Wo have been requested to make a series of the personal notices' tinder this head. Our" Presant hatch includes GEOUGE COSIDE, Tumacuiter and cc Young gruh-street," and that multominded man, Baoututem, tho octogenarian. Is there variety enough A few days ago, from personal knowledge and recollection, and before any, satisfying obituary notices of him had reached us in .the English journals,' we gave a sketch of Gaoling Comic, the Phrenologist, who died on Au gust 14th." Since then, we have seen, in the London Daily News, some interesting juirtien lars of the manner in which ho was converted into belief in Phrenology. As early as 1816, Dr. GORDON, a physician in Edinburgh, supplied JEFFREY with materials for "a slashing article,". in the Edinburgh Re-, view, against GALL and Sanaznatiti in which GALL was described as cthitter,". SpeainEnt as .ccaplenetie;" and both , as c , quacks." Edinburgh became anti-craniolo gical, from, that article, and the Comm (GEORGE and ANDREW) were loud-among the, scoffers. By and by, Dr. SPORZHEIIf visited Edinburgh, on a lecturing tour, and his good temper, as well as his intellect, drew a small but sagacious circle of clever ,young men around him. , Neither of the COMBES belonged to that coterie; neither of them would attend his lectures. But, one day, a brother-lawyer invited GEORGE COMBE to go to his house. and see SIIURZEIEIM ditisect a human brain. He went, and received enough of informition to make him-wish for more. He went a second time, and came,' from that visit, a decided Phrenologist. Afterwards he almost built up the system, (we can scarcely call it "science,") and became.iiii acknowledged exponent and champion. THAOKERAY AND YOUNG "GRUB-STREET." The great dispute between Mr. Tffs.ortraiai and Mr. EDMUND YATES, which culminated with discussion, at the Garrick Club, into the propriety of YATES resigning, to avoid being' tuned out of the Club, has not terminated, as was reported. The - cause of offence, as given by YATES and taken by TtIiCKEILdY, was that the former, in a pen-and.ink sketch' of the latter, said his _mmuser was supercilious, and that the bridge at his nose had been; broken. Here was opinion and fact;—the opinion that THAOKERAY'S manner was supercilious, the fact of the nasal break-down. This last is not concealed even by spectacles, and thane) Si...swim LAURENCE, the artist, when paint ing the author of "Panay Fair," repre sented him with Upturned face, as if be were snuffing up the morning air, after a late sir per, he was unable wholly to conceal the effects of the accident. Allusions,to personal deformities are what public men are usually very tetchy about. So, not content with sticking YATES into "The 'Virginians," 'as young Grub-street, Mr. THAOFERAT complain ed of him to the managing committee of the I Garrick Club, of which both are member's.' Here, rather unexpectedly, CHARLES DICE-' ENS and Sir JAMES Wants, (the Judge,) sided with YATES, declaring that the complaint was frivolous. But a majority decided, as we have said, that, to avoid expulsion, Mr. YsrzS' _should apologize or resign. He declines do'. Mg so :—he had been duly elected a :member of,The Club; he bad as duly paid his en trance=: fe4-tiiid..ZahlMUCtielMiptiez; the OcMiinittea had :no , right, he - say4"V enter into the, morits of a private misunder standing between two members; be would not retire; and .he could not legally be ex. pelted. This last'pobit was' submitted, by the Olub:managenient; to s , Oottnielleareed in the law,"' and their , opinion favors YATza's view. So it is proposed to dissolve the Club; i to dispose of its, property (including that un. I rivalled gallery of -theatrical portraits, once the property of the elder CHARLES MATHEIVS), and then to remodel the Club, re-electing each and every of its present members except MT. EDMOND YATES. Rather than cause so lamitch trouble; some very matter-of-fact pee- I pie have gone to the length of suggesting that peace would be restored by the vohm tary retirement of Mr. THACEERAY himself) Perhaps he has been -" supercilious" to them also 7 -- LORD BRIM:NIHAU ON THE RAIL. At the ago of 80—he wdl actually complete I I that age on the 19th of this month—Lord BROUG nem is ono of the most active men, in mind and body, of the present time. Except thathisbair is as white as snow, just like the Duke of WEL LINGTON'S for a dozen years before his death, Lord BROUGHAM might . readily be taken or mistaken for a man of '5O. His voiem retains its force and harshness his move ments are agile and quick; his body is erect; his complexion fresh and clear; his intellect subtle, grasping, and expansive as it ever was. A fortnight ago, as we learn from the last English journals, his Lordship. as a Westmoreland man by property, (he is Scotch by birth,) performed_ the honorary and honorable duty 'of turning the first sod of a now railway which is to traverse the county t in which his landed estates are situated. In England, the commencement of a new rail road is commemorated with considerable eclat, and the first sod is cut by some distin &shed person.. Thus, the commencement of the Trent Valley Railroad was personally made, in this manner, by tile late Sir RotIERT PEEL. I -- 8a.u.11A3c9 commencement of the Eden , Valley Railway was in this wise: A brawny 1 „ h •ovvie" banded him a new spade, with 1 which he cut the sod and throw it into a ma hogany b arrow, provided for the occasion. 1 1 He then whe: form for a dozen led the barrow along tho plat yards' emptied its contents mad then wheeling round ;by throwing it over, . .4 us. place. Ills work rolled it back to the'start. , tiSfaction to all, manlike proceeding gave si. „ 2 e vigator" or except a solitary grumbling d line ' f° ' i! navvie," (the men who dig out ti,. ; : 1 ithe railway,) who shrugged his shoulde:4: and 1 icorophained that Lord BROUGHAM did not kn,)W i i '' how to handle a spade, as he put tho wrong n the Rao,. foot upon it when he dug the sod. Every- 1 Wog in England commences or concludes ' wi dth a public dinner. DODOLAR JERROLD use,4 to say that if London were to bo de etroy,ed by an earthquake, the desolated inliabittuta Would assemble on the ruins, the next (Joy) to commemorate the ca tastrophe b' a public dinner! In honor, therefore, 0. 4 ' the commencement 'of Eden Valley Railway, there was a public dinner Ica the evening, witit Lord l3rtotiouAm as a guest. Ile was expected to make a speech, and did not baulk expectatiOn. Ono passage of his speech ran thus, and Is BROUGHASI all over: "My love of this railxv,ty is of the most per fectly disinterested kind; for I myself dislike travelling by railway beyond almost any other kind of conveyance. I used to consider a journey as an agreeable relaxation. I used to be treated, not like a parcel, as I now am, but like a Christian. Never theless, I must fairly confess that is a very selfish view of the subject; and that, to .the public at large, to the community, the intro duction of railways has been of the greatest possible advantage-has been the prime bless fug .s a of the agneja.::, Lord linonGrrait forgot that I his favorite slow-coach travelling, et the rate I of 8 or 10 miles an hour, stopping and sleep ing at Mae on the way, made fearful havoc PHILADELPHIA.'
