Some few Counterfeit Post-Notes of the Bank, of Maryland, having been lately difco vrred in circulation, and on tracing the fame were found to come from the back parts of Virginia, where they probably firft iflued ; to avoid imposition it is thought necessary to give «he following description of them, by which they may readily be dete&ed. They have the letter D, for their alphabeti cal mark, at the left hand fide of the Note. The paper on which they are printed is more foftand tender, the strokes of the letters, ?n the engraving are in general ftrongcr", and have a darker appearance than in the bills. The signature William Patterlon, is badly done, the strokes of the letters, are ftiff and labored, and appear to be painted over with the pen, as well as the flour idling of the name. The value is left blank in the engraving, to be filled up in writing, so the sum may be more or lets at pleasure. No true Post-Notes of the alphabetical mark, above deferibed, have been lately \C sued, and very few arc nr»tv in circulation. The above reward of One Thousand dol lars will be paid to any person, or persons, who (ball discover, or prosecute to eonvi&ion, the several offenders, or any of them, of the following description, viz. Tht Firfl American Edition. ' I 'HEgrand principle of Equality, if A rightly underftpod, is the only basis on which universal justice, sacred order, and perfett freedom, can be firmly built, and permanently secured. The view of it exhibited in this eflay, at the fame time that it represses the insolence of office, the tyranny of pride, and the outrages of oppression ; confirms, in the mod forcible the neceflity of subordination, and the just demands of lawful authority. So far indeed, from loosening the bands of society, that it maintains inviolate, e very natural and every civil diftin&ion, draws more closely every social tie, unites in one harmonious and justly proportioned system, and brings men together on the even ground of the inherent rights of hu man naure, of reciprocal obligation, and of a common relation to the community.
