TIIK COSVESTION We have seldom had so full a Convention in this county os that which assembled yesterday, nod have never seen one composed of better men. Middle-aged and old gentlemen composed n majority of the Convention. Men loDg attached to the Democratic turned out ibis time in earnest for the cause. It was certainly a good evidence that the Democracy is aroused and re solved to make a vigorous and harmonious effort to redoem Allegheny County. It can be done if nil oar friends will go to “work this fall in the right spirit. Oar opponents are divided. Wo are united, and now is our time to win. The foreign nows is of interest. The Allies, it seems, have resolved to do something in the Baltic. Helsingfors is to be bombarded. Oxner Pasha goes to Asia, to take command of tho Turkish army there. Tho bombardment of Sebastopol bad been recommenced. The assault to follow will be-a bloody one, but its success is moro than doubtful. Sebastopol is not yet taken. TUfi TICKET We had yesterday the best Democratic Coe mention that ever assembled in thi9 county ; and it has given ns the best ticket the Democracy has ever presented for the support of the people. Jadgo Wilkins' namo heads the ticket Tho old campaigner has come in to the rescue. For merly Member of Congress, Minister to Russia, and Secretary of War, he now consents to run for State Senate. Could a better man have been found io the State to head our ticket Rody Patterson for Sheriff. That will do, said every Democrat. I will vote for him said many a Whig. Wo are much mistaken if he Joes not make a sweeping ruu of it. There is hardly a man in the county that does notkaow him and respect him. He has served the Democracy we’i and faithfully for twenty-five years We can reward him now. Thomas Blockmore for Treasurer, lie, too, is well known, and we doubt whether he has an enemy in the world. We know he has hosts of friends in all parties. His name, too, give* strength to the ticket. Capt. John Birmingham for Trotbouotary. No party can present a bettor man He must be a good Demoorat to beat such competitors as ran against him. C&ft. B. is abundantly quali fied for the office, and is universally esteemed. William Alexander for Coroner None will doubt his Demooracy, or bis fitness for tho offioe. No Demoorat will fail to support him. Jaoob Tomer for Commissioner Don’t every body know him * It is a good nomination, and Will be well supported Ho is just the man for the place. ' ‘ We have not time to speak of tho balance of the ticket now ; but will speak of them-again We challenge even our opponents to say that a better tioket was ever presented in this county by any party. Tho Demooracy should respond cordially to this good work of tho Convention, and go to work vigorously for a triumph. TUB POST SUSTAINED. The question io regard to the “Test” was yesterday distinotly before the Democratic Con vention, and distinctly and most emphatically deoided in favor of the Pott. Tho words “ never, hat been a member of the secret order," wero strick en out of the Test by a voto of 80 to 20 four to one. The arguments used by tho majority were the same as we had employed to justify our course in the Committee, and in this paper. We welcome back to our party all who loft it, but are disposed to return. Any other course would have been proscriptive and impolitic, and would have driven off perhaps hundreds of votes. The Convention has deoided it right, and we arc re joiced at the result. Again: The Post has been much abhsed by a few bcoauso it was io favor of a straight-out Democratic tiokot. A motion of Mr. Donnelly, yesterday, put that question directly in issue before the Convention. Mr. Donacliy was op posed to the nomination of a ticket, and wanted fusion yet. After an earnest discussion, tho vote was taken by yeaß and nfajs, and resulted : For a fall Democratic tioket 79 For Fusion. i 8 Has the Post expressed the eentimentß of the party or not? Let that rote answer. Is the “old” Post sustained? Usmahlt Outrage.—J. L. Martzey, who re sides at Shelbyville, Indiana, being on bis way to Cincinnati, Btopped at Middletown all night. At the house was a little orphan girl, in whoso behalf he expressed mnch sympathy, and he kindly offered to take her down to Cincinnati, show her the oity, and restore her again to her guardians. Bhe was permitted to acoompaDy him, and on their arrival in Cincinnati, they Stopped at the Qalt House ; and in the afternoon the house was alarmed by pieroing shrieks from her room, on entering whioh the poor ohild was discovered most brutally and inhumanly out raged. She, it is feared, has been fatally inju red. He was arrested, and it is hoped may meet with just punishment. Pease. Leslie's Jouehal for September is received. It is the beßt number we have seen of it. The plates are excellent, and worth the whole prioe of the Journal for a year. The reading matter ia excellent, too. For sale by Miner & Co., and Qildenfenney &. Co. It will be seen that the ticket whioh the Post has published for aomo time past, has been pretty generally nominated by the Convention. Does the Post express the views of the party ? JOT The proceedings of the Convention crowd out a good deal of other matter to-day Sr tf y" . j-* Democratic County Convention. ] imiuatiun oi Members of the Legislature The Delegates elected at the late Primary Meetings to represent the Democracy of. To the President of the Allegheny County Demo cratic Convention Bin: —i address this noto to you, with tho request that you will do me tbo honor to submit it to tho gentlemen of the Democratio Conven tion of Allegheny county, when assembled in this city. I have been referred to, in conversation, by some of my fellow-ciiizons, and by paragraphs in the publio papors, as one likely to bo pre sented to the Convention for nomination as a candidate for the State Senate. I, therefore, very rospeotfally request that my name may not bo submitted to tbo Convention with a view to that nomination. The circumstances whioh induce me thus to withdraw myself from the notioo of kind fellow citizens, (who have already filled my heart with gratilade,) are so obvious and well-known to my friends and neighbors, that I feel relieved from the neoessity of particularising them. I am only anxious that the gentlemen of the Conven tion may not not draw tho inferenoe, that I am so vain as to suppose 1 should reoeive a vote placing me in nomination. I simply desire, by my present declaration, that all embarassment and useless casting of voteß may be avoided in making your selection of a candidate for the Senate ; which, 1 feel assured, will be a happy and successful one. The many j apparently insane excesses of those who Indulge In the use j of spirituous liquors, may be thus accounted tor. The true j cause of conduct, which is taken for Infatuation, Is Tory . frequently a diseased state of the Liver. No organ in the human system, when deraDged, produces a more frightful catalogue of diseases. And If, instead of applying remedies to tte manifestations of disease, as is too often the case, physicians would prescribe with a view to the original cause, fewur deaths would result from diseases Induced by a deraDged state of the Liver. Three-fourths of the diseases enumerated under the head of Consumption, have their seat in a diseased Liver.
