At tho time of his arrest, he had in his possession a sailJlo and a largo quantity of clothing, which Mayor Volz supposed at tho timo to have beon Btolen, but whioh Smith said ho had received from a ro . latlon in Cinoinnati. Sinoo bis committal the following foots have come to light, which show him to be a first class thiof. Some three gr four weeks ago, it appears, he was in tho em ploy of Mr. Bean, who discharged him from fur ther service, on account of bad oonduot. Sub sequently to his discharge, bo purloined from Mr. 8., a silver lever watoh, manufactured by M. I. Tobias & Co., Liverpool, England, No. 38,731, a quantity of clothing and some fifteen or twenty dollars in money, after whioh ho made off to Washington oounty, where ho be havod well for a timo. In tho oarly part of iaßt woek, however ho entered the storoof A. Strauss * Co., at West Alexandria, and Btolo therefrom, eight vosta, two pair of pants, one ooat, a pair of bootß and Beveral pairs of Bnspendcrs, alter Whioh he attempted to leave, but was taken and the goods found in his possession afowdays after wards. On on examination beforo Justioo MoCor mtok, ho was committed to tho Washington jail for trial. His stay in that institution however, was Of short duration, for a few nights r.ftor, ho managed to esoapo, and on tho day following with unparalled impudouco, repaired to the res idence of Squire McUormink, tho magistrate who had committed him to prison, and informed Mrs. MoC., that bo had been honorably dischar ged from custody, and desired tho return to his possession of tho goods whioh ho had beon ohar ged with stealing. Mrs. MoCormiok beliovod his story and’ handed over tho property, on whioh Smith walked oil. His intention was to leavo tho place, and started on foot for Whee ling. But after walking a short distanco his bundle being heavy and he being rather tired, ooncoived tho idea that it would bo as oheap to rido as walk. There being no public mode of oonvoyanceat hand however, ho found it acces sary to Bupply himself with one, whioh ho did by stealing a horso from Dr. Thomas Marohand, a physioian residing a few miles west of New Alexandria. When in sight of Whooling, ho dismounted and tied the animal to a treo, and after taking off tho saddle and bridle, repaired to the steamer EolipEc, on whioh ho started for this oily. When tho boat roaohed Rochester, Mr. Bean observing Smith on board repaired to this city, by railroad, and on Iho steamer's arri ving here, had him arreotod and oommitted lo prison as stated. He was haudod over to tho authorities of Washington oounty on Saturday morning, who started with him back to Lis old quarters.
