MONDAY MORNINU:
Ah Expert Thief in Custody.—We noticed
o few days ago, tho arrest of a fellow named
William Smith, oharged with stealing a watoh
and other artioles from Mr. Bean, the proprietor
of the Pavillion Hotel, Roohoster. At tho time
of his arrest, he had in his possession a sailJlo
and a largo quantity of clothing, which Mayor
Volz supposed at tho timo to have beon Btolen,
but whioh Smith said ho had received from a ro
. latlon in Cinoinnati. Sinoo bis committal the
following foots have come to light, which show
him to be a first class thiof. Some three gr
four weeks ago, it appears, he was in tho em
ploy of Mr. Bean, who discharged him from fur
ther service, on account of bad oonduot. Sub
sequently to his discharge, bo purloined from
Mr. 8., a silver lever watoh, manufactured by
M. I. Tobias & Co., Liverpool, England, No.
38,731, a quantity of clothing and some fifteen
or twenty dollars in money, after whioh ho
made off to Washington oounty, where ho be
havod well for a timo. In tho oarly part of iaßt
woek, however ho entered the storoof A. Strauss
* Co., at West Alexandria, and Btolo therefrom,
eight vosta, two pair of pants, one ooat, a pair
of bootß and Beveral pairs of Bnspendcrs, alter
Whioh he attempted to leave, but was taken and
the goods found in his possession afowdays after
wards. On on examination beforo Justioo MoCor
mtok, ho was committed to tho Washington jail for
trial. His stay in that institution however, was
Of short duration, for a few nights r.ftor, ho
managed to esoapo, and on tho day following
with unparalled impudouco, repaired to the res
idence of Squire McUormink, tho magistrate
who had committed him to prison, and informed
Mrs. MoC., that bo had been honorably dischar
ged from custody, and desired tho return to his
possession of tho goods whioh ho had beon ohar
ged with stealing. Mrs. MoCormiok beliovod
his story and’ handed over tho property, on
whioh Smith walked oil. His intention was to
leavo tho place, and started on foot for Whee
ling. But after walking a short distanco his
bundle being heavy and he being rather tired,
ooncoived tho idea that it would bo as oheap to
rido as walk. There being no public mode of
oonvoyanceat hand however, ho found it acces
sary to Bupply himself with one, whioh ho did
by stealing a horso from Dr. Thomas Marohand,
a physioian residing a few miles west of New
Alexandria. When in sight of Whooling, ho
dismounted and tied the animal to a treo, and
after taking off tho saddle and bridle, repaired
to the steamer EolipEc, on whioh ho started for
this oily. When tho boat roaohed Rochester,
Mr. Bean observing Smith on board repaired to
this city, by railroad, and on Iho steamer's arri
ving here, had him arreotod and oommitted lo
prison as stated. He was haudod over to tho
authorities of Washington oounty on Saturday
morning, who started with him back to Lis old
quarters. None of tho property belonging to
Mr. Bean, has boon recovered, (ho thief deny
ing any knowledge, whatover, of tho theft.

on Saturday, mndo information before Aldermau
Steele, against Bernard MsAners, for having
deprived her of that choicest gem of woman—her
virtue. Her etory as related before the magis
trate, illustrated very strongly the confidence a
woman plaoes in a man. when she once litea her
affections open him Rachel, it appears, resi
ded in Allegheny, a short time ago, where she
mads the acquaintance of McAnccs. lie being
a good iookiDg Irishman, with more than a usu
al Share of that talcot, love-making, for th t the
Datives of Iho Green Isle are proverbial for,
was not a great whilo in gaming tho niiections
of tho lady, who although no longer youDg,
still had a sufficient share of person',! attrac'
tions. Tho result was, that an intimacy tf tbc
very closest character soon c-iiatej between
the two, and for a considerable time they lived
together as man and wife. The Indy was tho
owner of a conplo of houses and iota, tho ti
ties to which McAnees induced her lo convey
over to him. No sooner had ho obtained poses

him also $l4O belonging to Rachel Consider
ing this, treatment neither grateful nor affec
tionate, she made information again?! him, as |
above atatc.l, and also instituted suit in the lHs
trict Court for breach of promise .Saturday
afternoon, he was taken before 'Squire Steel,
but being unable to give bail in either case, (the
security demanded for tho breneh of promise
was $4,U00,) he was committed to jail, where he |
will probably remain until Court meets, nest i

A Guild Attached by a Hog—On Friday
afternoon, a son of Mr. Hebert Fattcrson, cf
Soott street, while playing in the street, won
attacked by a large and ferocious hog. which
injured the child very acvoroly. Tbo brute
pushed him down, bit him severely on the book
and eido, find would doubtless have tom him in
pieces, had not a lady ran to his resouc. k was
with difficulty the animal was forced to relin
quish his attack, and whoo driven oti, made
after a larger child.

Malicious Puohecution. —Jarocs Gatamole,
on Saturday instituted suit in the District
Coart against Patriot Dolany, for malioious
prosecutiou. Catamolc, it will bo recollected,
was arrested a few days ago, at tho instigation of
Dolany, for having in bis possession a quantify
of iron taken from tho Good Intent Engine
House. A capias was issued for Dolany and bail
required in $3OO.

New York and Erie Uallroads for the month of July, com
pared with July, 1864 : Pennsylvania, for 1856, $307,610 34 ;
New York and Krh\ $376,206 07. For 1854. Pennsylvania,
$200,200 S 7 ; New York and Erie, $407,260 03. Thus it will
be seen that tho Pennsylvania Railroad Increases $08,216 47,
while the New York and Erie Railroad decreases $32,062 90.

the death of Captain Barron's daughter. The reports are

on Thursday. Contributions in aid of tho sufferers are
cpuiiug in frxin nil quarters. The fund in this city now
amounts to over $6,000.
