TROUBLES AHEAD. It is evident that this country is not long to enjoy the calm repose of peace, security and harmony. The Indian tribes along our whole western frontiers appear to be combining and arming for a general war ; and it is suspected, with some reason, that the Mormons are inciting them to hostilities. It has been a point of Mor mon polioy ever since they settled in Utah to secure the friendship of the Indian tribes along the routes of travel across the plains, and in the regions around the Mormon settlements. Indian an children are educated in their ehools. Food is freely furnished to the Indian tribes in times of scarcity ; and every means employed to gain their friendship. This policy was right in it self ; but it has given the Mormons an influence among the Indians that can be easily turned to evil purposes if the Mormon leaders are so disposed ; and certain it is that the whole In dian population is becoming unusually hostile ; and there are appearances of combination amongst them for a common and hostile purpose. They appear, too, pretty well supplied with arms Bud ammunition. The murderers of Gunnison and his party were helped by the Mormons to ecoape from punishment; and Brigham Young is becoming more bold and insolent towards our government than over. Col. Stoptoo has declin ed the governorship of Utah territory, and Brigham rules without a rivaL Should it be as certained upon investigation that the Mormons are Inciting the Indians to hostilities, or supply ing them with arms, our government should, take prompt means not only to subdue, the . savages, but to drive the Mormons from a position where they can give the country mush trouble. A general Indian war is no improbable event along our Western frontiers. Should some genius arise among the savages like Tecumseh of old, that war would be troublesome and expensive, but in the end most disastrous to the Indians. They seem destined to utter extermination ; and a war now, provoked by themselves, would has ten their ultimate fate. Then, the struggle on the soil of Kansas, be tween the friends and foes of slavery, bide fair to assume a dangerous aspect. Atchiscn and his band of marauders seem resolved to force slavery on the territory at the point of the bayonet; and the settlers from the north will not long submit to such an outrage. A civil war, and a bloody one, may yet determine the question of slavery or freedom in Kansas. We have no doubt as to the ultimate result, but in the meantime the country may be again agitated more furiously than ever before on the slavery question. To admit Kansas into the Union as a slave'State when the majority of the people are opposed to the Institution oan hardly be expect ed of the northern States. It should not be done, and will not be. To refuse its admission on that ground will revive all the animosity be tween the different portions of the Union which It was hoped had been finally put to_rest by the compromises of 1950. Scarcely less ominous of trouble and danger are the late acts of the legislature of Massa chusetts. Nullification in its rankest form has raised Its head in the old Bay State ; nod another attempt to capture a fugitive slave on its soil would probably result in more deter mined resistance than the last. The Federal government will be bound to execute the fugi tive slave law, and, if the action of the legisla ture is any indication of the determination of the people of Massachusetts, the government forces will be strenuously resisted. With the next attempt to capture a slave there we shall ' see whether the people of Massachusetts aro re solved on rebellion and civil war. It le now stated that the Spanish government hag declined ter the present to make any com pensation for the Black Warrior outrage, or any reparation or apology for the repeated insults and injuries to our flag and our commerce. Our difficulties with Spain, then, are in a worse po sition than ever, and must be met with more de cided action than heretofore. It is seen, then, that there are numerous ques tions arising that will demand all the wisdom and energy of Congress and the Administration for their settlement. We do not believe that this country can ever have permanent peace with Spain till her fleets and her power are ex pelled from American waters. The Spaniards have always been bad neighbors, and are becom ing constantly more troublesome and Insolent. There will be many serious matters to engage the attention of the next Congress. Shall Spain be brought to justice, and long delayed punish ment? Shall Kansas be - admitted into the Union with a slavery constitution foroed upon it by the Missourians ? Shall Utah become a State of the confederacy with Its hierarchical and not repub lican government? Shall Brigham Young re main Governor of the territory, and defy the power and authority of the government? Is a general Indian war to be provided for ? Shall the laws of the United States be executed in Massachusetts, or shall practical nullification and mob law triumph? Such are some of the questions that must engage the attention of the next Congress. Vraatsia.—The returns so far as received in dicate that "Sam" has been busy in the " Old Dominion." Monsieur Flournoy, whom we never heard of until a few months ago, is prob ably elected Governor of that State for the next two years. This result is not altogether unex pected. Mr. Wise had many enemies outside of the new party, and some of the staunchest Democrats refused to support him. But Virginia is a very large State, and it will take a good while to get the returns all in. Railroads and telegraphs are not as numerous there as in the northern States. It may yet turn oat that the middle and southern districts will tell a different story as to the final result. We oan wait with patience. It is astonishing bow many men there are who do not read the newspapers, and who are conse quently an easy prey to the sharpers. A very barefaced swindle by means of the .confidense game occurred in this city a abort time ego. Here is the latest diddle in New York by a slight ly different means: A Mr. Azariah Stout, an unsophisticated farmer, from Farmer's Creek, in the township of Elbe, Michigan, went over to Greenwood Cemetery, the other day, in com pany of a man named Wheeler. While wander• leg around, looking at the tomb stones, they were accosted by a third party, who turned out to be a confederate of Wheeler. By means of the "patent safe game," the two sharpers man aged to do the Michigan man out of $950. The police, however, succeeded in capturing Whiel er, but without the unfortunate countryman's money. Persons in America have not been accustomed to believe much in the existatioe of a feeling of regard for Louts NAPOLEON among the French people, but it must have been impressed upon every attentive reader of the foreign news by the Baltic, that the manifestations of rejuiciog Et hie escape from the pistol shots of an assassin , were very general and hearty. Hminon GREELEY who cannot ba suspected of loving the French Emperor mach, writes at Paris, May lht, as fvl lows, of his works and policy, giving, we pr:- some, a very correct view of the state of affairs: I was last before In France in July, 1851, when she was (at least in name) a Republic ; I return to mark the changes wrought by three years and over of imperial sway. I shall en deavor not to forget the modesty where with a stranger not acquainted even with the language should speak of the feelings and aspirations of a great people, and, collating all the testimony 1 have been able to collect, to set forth the good as well as the evil effects of the Napoleonic Auto cracy with frankness and candor. The Government of Russia has been defloed as "a despotism tempered by assassination." That of France I would rather characterise as a despotism tempered by a salutary consciousness of the instability or power in this country had an earnest desire to promote the material welfare of its subjects. Louis Napoleon, whatever his de• merits, is no blockhead. He knows that the mode in which he acquired power was most exception able, and impose on him a double necessity for circumspection in its use and benificence iu its influences. He knows that he rules by the might of bayonets, and that these are for the moment all-powerful in France; but he knows also that this is an age in which bayonets think. The ar my is hie scepter; he feeds it, flatters it, defers to it ; but he is aware that its ranks are constant ly rooruited from the cottages and firesides' of France, and that, were ho to become deoidediy odious, his bayonets would no longer be reliable and might soon prove dangerous. And besides since France has become his possession, his prop erty, his ox, his ass, he must be a fool or a de mon if ha did not aspire and labor to render her as prosperous and happy as may be without sub verting or endangering his throne. I cannot doubt, therefore, that he anxiously endeavors not only to reconcile his subjects to the Imperial regime, but to improve their material and social condition. I could not name another living mon arch who would be likely to wield such absolute power over thirty-five millions of people more beneficently than he does. giiir The May number of Blackwood has been received by Miner & Co. BEMS, Secretary. - - '.• ~ •° • • 4. _ 1, • _ Fame Valuable 11Irde In looking over the second part of the Patent Office Report for 1853, I see that several cor respondents advocate the importation of useful birds, such as the red-breast, black cap, song thrush, blackbird, skylark, quail, &e. There is no doubt that if an addition were made to our already beautiful varieties posterity would reap some benefit ; but to insure that benefit a suita ble protection should be given to them, as well as those we now have. We have many birdo that are beautiful, and of almost incalculable value to the farmer, to say nothing of their cheer• tog songs and complete innocence in every re spect. There are two varieties of sparrows that win tar with us, and one other that spends his sum• mer only with us. Then there is the bluebird, the first to greet us in the early spring, but soon followed by the robin. Next there is the red winged blackbird, the wren, and several varie ties of awdlows, with some half dozen other kinds I have not learned. These invariably live on insects, or the seed of plants, except the ro bins, who by way of recompense for the thous midi of insects he has destroyed, makes an occa sional dessert on ripe cherries. There is also another sweet, monotonous-ton ed little creature with black wings, called the yellow-bird, otherwise the flax bird, because he likes the flax seed, and because it is not au un usual occurrence to ace them by huadreds in a field of flax when the seed begins to get ripe. When frightened off, they go twittering along at every bound on-their wings, as they see saw through the air. But they like seeds of many plants quite as well, if not better, than flax seed, among which are the seeds of the whole thistle family. And here he redeems hims.alf, for he will not allow a single se eJ to escape, if he can get it. Then there a great many that are not so par tieulai whether they get the insect or larTee ; and if neither is at hand, they can make a meal OD many kinds of fruit. The much•admired oriole, sometimes c illed the fiery hang bird, and gold finch, is not at all fastidious in this respect • nor is he careful about the number destroyed fora site le meal ; for lie trill thrust his bill firat into one nice plum and then another, until he has spoiled scares at a time.
