As the season, for planting TruU fthd ornamental trees and vines is near, the renders of your paper may be reminded jt I n i . . . 1 mat to De successiui in growing trees re quires reflection and judgmont. Many of those who plant trees know better than they practice, A -few rules rigidly observed will nearly always secure satis factory results. Ilulo 1st. Prepare the ground by till ing it, kyin it out, and digging the holes to receive the trees early in the season. Ilulo 2d. If the ground is dry enough to be mellow, and it' tho weather is favor able, as soon as tho frost has taken off the leaves, got good trees diroctly from tho nursery without allowing the roots to become dry, and plant immediately. Note. A good tree is young, smooth in tho bark, the stem much, thicker at the ground thau at the top, the top is low and spreading, with many limbs equal ly distributed on all sides of tho stem. A straight stem is desirable, but a crook od stein is one of the least objections to a treo for fruit. ' ; llule 3d. If you are not well enough acquainted with the varieties of fruit to make a Bolection yourself, do not trust to transient " troo agents" to doit for you very few of them know as much about fruit as you do yourself. Consult some trustworthy and intelligent nurseryman, or, better, study some good promological work, and then decido what will suit you. Rule 4th. Never plant a tree that comes to you in a package, which has been opened during its transit. Noto. Trees can' bo shipped from Maine to Texas in a good condition, if properly packed ; but a half a day's hand ling may injure the roots of a tree to such an extent as to make it unlit for planting. A bucket of water thrown over a wagon load of trees packed (?) in a little straw, a short time before the agent arrives nt tho placo of delivery, is not conclusive, evidence that the roots have been moist during the two or threo weeks that they have been on the route. Winter planting ' is tho worst. Early Spring planting does very well. My experience leads me to prefer early Fall us the best time to plant fruit trees and vines. Ilulo 6th. Plant your trees carefully. Burying the roots in a hole is not enough. ;-: , .' "i . Aubor Vitae. The Teeth of a Horse. At five years of ago a horse has forty tenth. There are twenty-four molar or jaw-teeth, twelve incisor or front teeth, and four tusks or canine teeth, between tho uiolur and incisorusaally wanting in the mare.. At birth only the two nippers or middle incisor appear.- At a year old, tho incisors are all visible on theurst or milk set. Before three the permanent nippers have oomo through.. At v four years old, tho permanent dividers n6xt to the' nippers are out. - At five the mouth is perfect, tho second set of teeth having been completed. At six, tho hollow under tho nippers, called the mark, has disappeared from the nipper.), and dimin ished in tho dividers. At seven, the mark has disappeared from the dividers, and tho next teeth, or corners, are level, though showing no murk. .At eight, the mark has gone from the' corners, and the horse is said to be aged. After this time indeed, good authorities say after fivo years the ago of a horse can only be con jectured. But the teeth gradually change their form, the incisors becoming round, oval, and then triangular. Dealers some times bishop the teeth of old horses ; that is, scoop them out to imitate the mark ; but this can be known by tho absence of the white edge of enamel which always surrounds the real murk, by the shape of the teeth, and other marks of age about the animal. . 1 ' i Spoiling Horses' Feet. . ' It in olmobt impossible to get a horso shod without having tho frog cut oway. All veterinary Burgeons, all horseman, all loadittg blacksmiths, agree that tho frog Bhould not be pared one particle, not even trimmed. No waller how pliable uud soft tho frog is, cut it away smooth on all Hides and in two days it will bo dry and hard as a chip. You might as well cut off the leaves of trees and expect thorn to flourish as to pure away tho irog and have a healthy foot. ' The rough spongy part of tho frog is to the foot what leaves are to the tree -the lungs. Never hav a red-hot shoo put upon tho foot to burn it level. , If you pan find a blacksmith that U mechanic enough to level the foot without a red-hot iron, employ him. ' The burning process dead ens ths hoof and tends to contract it, If you do not think so, try the red-hot poker on your finger niil.i tod sea how it will affect the growth of that. There are ninny other Important points in shoeing horses, but these two are of more importance than all the rest, even to the apprehension of men not skilled iu horses, and the two most disregarded.
