Here is a kind of disability under which women suffer, -with . - out, so far as we have. heard, the slightest pros pect of relief, or even any general disposition artcong — tbe - ' — sufferers --- -to—complaim amateur performances by gentlemen : at the London theatres are becoming common, but it always seems to be assumed that ladies can hive no concern with them otherwise ; than zts spectators. It is to be hoped that an-asso ciation will be formed under the presidency of * - 11-.11. , 5. Mill, for asserting the right. of ladies equal Share of the privilege's of the qunateur stage. Indeed, we should like to see lan' announcement of a performance for the -,benefit of-a charity .by ladies, In. which the. :male parts would be filled by profi;ssional !actors. That would only be a fair .return for ',the contemptuous exclusion of ladies from .erfermances which are arranged by gentlemen. it has beervbitherto assumed that an appear ance on a public stage was .an impropriety h ally woman who had not adopted actint as • a profession. This is one — of - the ccssumptions which have been made by men, and which women in the, course of modern] progress will abolish. The energetic ladies who hold public meetings t enterce the claiM of their sex to political and social rights will doubtless commence a re'so- I ate agitation against the existing mOtiopely by' men of the privileges of amateur acting. In act, we are not without hope of witnessing the formation of a society for this express object, which may include among its members all the leading agitators for women's rights. if wo men are to have votes for Members of Parlia ment, we suppose that they are to be themselves eligible for seats in Parliament, and of course they will take their full share in the business 'of public meetings. Indeed, they are beginning to do that already. There are certain well-known names which figure perpetually as chairwomeß. , -- if that be the proper expression—at public meet ings. if one lady proposes a resolution at the Dimmer Square Booms, it is difficult to sse why another lady- shOuld not perform a part at he Gaiety Theatre for the benefit of a hospi al. Speaking for putsches, we should prefer hat the ladies would neither move resolutions tor perform at theatres, but then it is probable hat our ideas upon these subjects are slightly utiiquated. But the women who demand the privileges of men will doubtless demand them o the full extent, and we expect that an early number of the Victoria .illagazine will an nounce that-a movement has. ueguu for placing men and women on a footing of theatrical conality. The great number of men who take to the amateur stage are .apparently influenced more by fashion -than by taste; The amusement is harmless and comparatively inexpensive, and therefore it ought to he matter of rejoicing to all, except their andtefices, that so many men desire to act who liav6, special capacity for acting.. We know that 'Eire are - tonateurs on - the stage; as Well as in ;the 'saddle, to whom the best professionals are-only in a trilling de gree, superior. But still it is surpriSing that the sort of men whom one finds in every company, of amateurs should think it worth while to act, and that people shoidd think it worth while to go to see them. The prices are nearly double of what is charged at the ordinary theatres, and the performance is not half as good. But: of'' course if our money goes to the benefit of Loudon Orphans, or to any other useful purpose., we do not grudge it, and we sit out the performance a~s . best we Wray. 'There good we do and suffer so nitwit 1 . ,w charity. But we cannot help Wondering, if this_sortorthing is done at all, ladies do nut lake part in doing it. They have long since overcome their modesty sufficiently to hold -tails at hazaars, where the proceeds are dedi cated to charity, and these bazaars are open to everybody who is willing to spend, money. 'Hale is nothing to prevent a bank clerk from buying a peu-wiper of a countess, and looking at her while lit completes the purchase. It Is ;perfectly understood that gentlemen attend bazaars, not because they want smoking-caps and slippers, bin for the sake of seeing and talking-to-the .fitir keepers of the .stalls.. But bazaars liaviz-naw ldecome an intolerable bore, ;y - .) perhaps by way of iiiivelty"We may see a countess upon the stage. The language of the -plity has only too . uich of that-adornment - which is supposed by - Oramatists and --novelists to be as indispensable to a proper representa tion of a mediseval period as the " Gothic" fors niture of the .hamber.of the wealthy citizen of Tours... When Gringoire is dragged by the archers into the King's presence, and sees cold Meat, and wine upon ,:v Gothic' table; he - ex claims, in language suited to the occasion, "liy'r Lady, 'twas to supper they were drag ging me ;" and again, when he is offered a wing ,of partridge, "-Marry -two -wings' and . a - leg withal." - . But we suppose!that, like the,long-pointed shoes which Gyingfi“. wears, it is the __correct,- medix, val or Gothic style. .. . But another character, the formidable Olivier' le-Daim, scarcely fulfils the. Gothic exigency Of the occasion- ---He treats Gringoire on the-prin ciple of no song no supper.: "Thinktr thou," says he. " 'tis honest to break your" fait' with oat paying scot_ and lot fot what you eat?" We do not object to this expression-"paying scot. and lot - -merely as au expression; buttecause we think its niectiaval character is, to say the .least, questionable. However, Olivier's mean ing plainly stated is, that Gringoire must pay - for'his supper by singing one of his own bal lads before eating it. . The ballad which he is thus prevailed upon to sing is specially-ciffensiV6 -- to the King, in whose preset' Gringoire-does not know until too late that he is standing. ,-• The: orchard of the,. The author and singer of such a song would be likely to find himself exemplifyintr, his own meaning, nor would i King Louis XI., or his minister, Olivier-le- Dann, be restrained from hanging such an au dacious offender by,,the circumstances that he As:peered to have alnalformation of his neck. ' Gringoire is sentenced to be huged, but - the King allows him to sup beforeis death, and admires the appetite he shows. Then-Grin goire, speaking to himself, reveals the love - lie bears to Loyse, the daughter of the merchant and god-daughter of the King.
