A Strange Debaneh. A singular orgie took place in EnglShd last month at New Brighton, a town on the Mersey; A brig laden with' rum went to pieces, and the casks floated toward shore. The populace crowded down to share the plunder, and the account says: - “Servants and married women : werh of the number. The, crowd, got hold of daak after cask, which they speedily broached; and : then .they began to drinkthe. raw-rum, some of it above proof, .with fierce gusto.' Several of the puncheons washed ashore were ; turned on end, the heads knocked out, and the contents drunk to the dregs; others Were pierced and sucked at in turns by the mad-, dened' savages. The consequences', of' the furious debauch soon appeared‘in _ stagger; ing of helpless groups, blind with intoxica tion.yellingandcursingtiUtheyfellappa- rehtiy.deadnpon the sand, or wer,e dragged by the heels out of the surf into places of, safety. . One young man guzzled the fiery liquid till he fell down and died, without ; any return of consciousness; another,: after a maniacal draught of it, tumbled' head foremost into a pool among the rocks, and was Well nigh drowned before he was taken out,. A. painter-; poured • the paint from his pot, wiped it with grass and drank the raw rum till he wal lowed insensible on the sea beach. A number of servant girls and married wo men who went down to the beach to seethe wreck, whieh had been and was washing ashore, were prevailed upon to taste the rum. The consequences can be conjectured. Numbers of the females sunk into a stateof. insensibility, .'and- were to the: greatest indignities. One yonhg woman, very well connected, in company with a more elderly female, was' prevailedupbn to take some of the raw spirits, -and she, like' many others, was treated with the greatest violence, having been attacked: by three ruffians. She was discovered at a late hour last night, lying in the sand-bills, quite un conscious, and taken to her home by the po lipe.”; : V-;■ ;• ; :, J . ■' : : - - riNAHVIAh S-SO’s, 7 S-l O’s, 1881 } s, 10-40»s, COMPOUND HJTEBEST NOTES. * BOUGHT AND SOLD.
