TBB LOVED NOT LOST. BY JOHN G. WHITTIEB.' * How strange it Seems;- with so much pone Of life and lhve,' to still live on! i Ah, brother, only I and Jthou Are left of all that circle now. The. dear homefaceswbeyeupon That fitful firelight paled and shene, Henceforward, listen as we will, The voices of that hearth are still; Look where we may the wlde earth o’er Those lighted faces shine no more. We tread the paths their feet have worn, We sit fceneath their .orchard trees, We he jrilike .them the hum 'of bees’ And rustle of the bfaded oorn; We turn the pages that they read, Their written words we Unger o’er ' But in the sun they cast no shade; r Ho voice is heard, no signismade, Ho step is on the conscious floor! Yet love will dream, and faith will trust, Since he who knows ; our need is just, That somehow somewhere meat we must. Alas for him who never sees The stars-shine-through his cypress trees! BANQUET TO AMERICANS IN BERLIN. : • [Correspondence of theWorUL] Berlin, November 29, P. M.—At 6 o’clock this evening about a hundred persons were assembled in the drawing room' of the Hotel tie Borne and shortly after all adjourned to the spacious and elegant dining-hall of the establishment. Some one of the committee of arrange ments probably has a two-cent piece in his jgpesessipn; ;forTthe shield with;, the , legend “In God we trust, 1 ’ which sur . mounted the - bill of 'fare 1 is the same as that on-the reverse of the larger nickel. That not usually bashful bird, the Ame rican Eagle, didnotshow himself during the ; evening, though his loud but not unpleasant voice became distinctly audi ble after the wine had been well passed. But here is the carte: * THANKSGIVING ©INNER, NOV. 29, 1866. Consomme a la jardiniere. Soupe tortue. Sander aulbeurre, sauce Hollandaise. Boast beef a'l’Ahgiaise. Petits pots verts. His excellency, Mr. Wright, the United States Minister at Berlin, pro posed the first toast: “The President of the United States.” Having apolo igzed for his health not permitting him to make a speech, Governor Wright briefly alluded to the success of the Ad ministration in diminishing the national debt, the" restoration of friendly rela tion with all civilized.people; referring more particularly to the cordial relations with Great Britain, and to Maximilian’s abandonment of Mexico, adding that he could dssure the friends of republican ism in Europe that no monarchial go vernment would ever be established on the Continent ofJNorth America. The ambassador took his seat in the midst of l«oUjQ.pjUiuiaA In responding to the toast "me nay We Celebrate,” Dr. Thompson made the speech of the evening. Perhaps most of the Germans present would have been convinced of the capacity of Ameri cans to enjoy themselves, if the doctor had not defended the Englisn language from the libelous imputation, that “Gemuetlichket” cannot be translated into English; and that the English and Americans have not the idea, and do not need the expression: but beginning with the Puritans, he so fully accounted for the whole misapprehension, historically, logically, arid artistically, taking his ; laughingly hearers with him into Eug lanu—Old and New—to see the people and into the picture galleries of Holland to see the contemporary portraits, that. there can be no error in the future on that score. Mr. Kreismann, the affable United States Consul, paid a handsome tribute to the steadfastness and the virtue of the King of Prussia. It 'was a real ringing speech, and such a one as I have no doubt the Germans in Dong John Wen tworth’s district have ; many a time cheered to the echo. Professor Pieper, of the University, re plied briefly, in German, to “Deutsch land und America,” making a graceful acknowledgment of the reeeDtion given to Germans in the United 'States, and expressing the hearty good wishes of Prussians for the great American Union. Several other short speeches were made by Prof. Bennett, of Rochester; General Dodge, U. S. Consul at Bremen; Baron von Hoffman, Messrs. Pay, Knox, Phil. Ipps and others. Nearly one hundred and fifty sat down to dinner, and every one seemed merry. As all the Americans were distin- : guished, each being as the son of a king, it is of course unnecessary to mention! names. The sprinkling of American ladies, like roses in a hedge, enlivened! the scene and the conversation. Among; the German guests present were Pro-1 lessor Zumpt, who promises soon to add “The Criminal Law of the Romans” to bis list of books,-Herr Jagor, the trav-! «ler, and Dr. Abel, the philolog.
