THE WiSIJVK SOON. BY W. C. BBYANS?. I’ve watched too late; the morn Is near! One look at God’s broad silent sky! : • O hopes and wishes vainly dear, How in your very.strength-yedie! Even while your glow Is on the cheek, And scarCuthe high pursuit begUnj. The heart grows faint, the hand grows weak; The task pf life is left undone. See where Upon the horizon’s brim, Lies the still' cloud in gloomy bars; The waning moon, all pale and dim, Goes up amid the eternal stars. T,nt« in a flood of tender light, She floated through the etherial blue, - A softer sun, that shone all night, Upon the gathering beads of dew. And still thou wanest, pallid moon ! The encroaching shadow grows apaoe; Heaven's everlasting watchers soon Shall see thee blotted from thy place. O. Night’s dethroned and crownless, queen! Well may thy sad, expiring ray Be shed oil those whose eyes'have sSeh Hope’s glorious visions fade away. Shine thou for forms that once were bright, For sages in the mind’s eclipse; For those whose words were spells of might, But falter now on: stammering lips! In tby decaying beam there lies Full 1 many a grave on bill and plain, Of those who closed their dying eyes In grief that they have lived in vain. Another night, and-thonsmong The spheres of Heaven shall cease to'Bhine, All ray less in the glittering throng Whose lustre late was quenched in thine. Tet soon n new and tender light From out thy darkened orb Shall beam, And broaden till it shines all night On glistening dew and glimmering stream. A Story of Cairngorm. .The London Court Journal prints the following as from its Paris correspond ent. The nobleman referred to seems to be the late Duke of Hamilton: Some years ago a Scotch nobleman of high name and lineage, having learned that the Emperor was adorning the great gallery of Compeigne with the trophies of arms of all nations, begged to offer his contribution in the shape of a Scotch trophy, which all the visitors to the chateau are wont to remark as being the most beautiful weapons gathered there. There were but few—the clay more of highly tempered steel, which put to shame the Damascus blade hanging on the neighboring panel: the small round shield and the Highland dirk seeming to the eye as if pf dazzling whiteness from excess of polish, when the light of day shoneupon them, but perfectly blinding and impos sible to be looked upon if by chance the rays of the sun happened to strike in their direction. The claymore and shield were unadorned, but the dirk had once belonged to the great represen tative of the mighty house to which the donor belonged. It had been worn by him during his whole career, and had been preserved amongst the priceless souvenirs of his clan and family. In the handle glittered a magnificent cairn gorm, bright and yet full of shadow, like liquid fire. This weapon, as we all know, was considered the greatest curi osity in the whole collection of arms, and has been pronounced by connoisseurs unique in the whole world. A year or two after the conmletion of the collection the Scotch nobleman hap pened to be amongst the visitors at the chateau, and on returning late one even ing, chanced to pass through the gallery on his way to his room to dress for din ner. The light of the taper he carried fell full upon the panel where hung the dagger carried with such glory by his ancestors, and above all, seemed to settle, as it were, upon the cairngorm, which actually appeared ready to start from its socket-like angry eye as it glared upon him. The effect was so startling that the Scot could scarcely reach his room without yielding to the temptation of calling for assistance. All the superstition of the Highlands, deadened, but not destroyed, by com munion with the gay world of the Con tinent, the study of modern philosophy, and a foreign marriage, burst upon his mind more vigorously than ever from the long campression. and the dinner bell found him still musing in his arm chair, siill trembling from head to foot, and totally unable to appear at table. What right had he to dispose of the goodly weapon which many a time and oft had served to defend the honor of the noblest house in Scotland? What light to give away the jewel, above all, which had been claimed with tears and supplications by one who had once been dearer to his boyish heart than all the world beside? He had committed a double crime in bestowing on another what he should not have considered as hiß own to give. The fair claimanthad attached her superstitious belief to the legend which insures protection from the demon to those who possess a jewel which had passed the night in St. Andrew’s shrine; and she knew the tradition (in verse moreover) which told that this very stone had been taken in great pomp by one of their, mutual ancestors to pass the night by the side of St. Anthony’s tooth, kept in a casket of pure gold at the mo nastery close by Castle. She was no longer young, althoughstill beautiful. She was the wife of another, and the mother of many children, but her sweet reproof on bidding him adieu only a few weeks before, conveyed in the clear, fresh, breezy Highland accent, still rang in his mind. To ask for a return of the gift was im possible; to remain where he would be liable to have his feelings continually excited at beholding it, now that re morse and memory had been aroused concerning it, would be too trying, and so he told his story amid all the naif embarrassment of a school-boy laughing at his own emotion, yet scarcely ashamed of it nevertheless, so powerful are early impressions and the respect of tradition. Some time passedaway; the nobleman returned to Paris, and to the gay life he had been wont to lead. One night hews was brought to those who loved him well ®t the Tuileries that he had been struck w j d®?** 1 suddenly without warning ana nothing remained of all the wit and talent and generous liberality which had endeared him to all who knew him, save tue memory of the possessor of all noble qualities and sorrow for his loss. But while all his friends were still under the 'influence of the dreadful tidings there came a message from Compeigne, stating that during the course of that same night the cairngorm had disap peared from the handle of the Highland TEE DAILY EVENING tUESPAYy DECEMBER 18.1866.-TRIPLE SHEET dirk in the . long gallery, and that no indication appeared of the.manner in which it had been abstracted, nor could the slightest clue be obtained as to the way in which the thief had obtained admittance to the gallery. Amid thegreater grief inspired by the loss of a dear friend, the-lesser sorrow’for that of the privation of a jewel, however precious, is scarcely heeded. No. ; notice of the event’was'taken at the moment, and, indeed, the dagger was suffered to remain'deprived of : ; its jeweled orna ment for more than . two seasons, the idea of replacing it having been forgot ten amid more serious pre-occupations, when, to the astonishment of the whole chateau during one of the most stormy nights of last winter, the gentleman ranger, who lives in the apartment be neath., the gallery, having been disturbed about midnight " by the bursting open of a door, as he thought, by the wind, which was blowings perfect hurricane, ascen ded to the gallery in order to close it. He declares, and everybody is free to ques tion him upon the subject, that as he en tered the gallery the .cold current of air which blew in, fromthe casement, which had b'een carelessly fastened, and was swinging to and fro, nearly blew out the light which he carried, and yet, for all that, he was conscious of some one be side himself in the gallery, and as he ad vanced, he became distinctly impressed that'some one else was retreating from the side of the gallery where hung the trophies towards the open window. The official is a bold man and a great philosopher. He rushed to. the window and closed It hastily. Nothing was to be seen without, and holding the light above his head, hegazed down the whole length of the gallery, which was empty likewise, but, as he turned, he started with amazement,' fer the light fell upon the Scottish dirk, and the cairngorm, bright, fiejy, and dazzling as ever, seemed to dart living rays upon him as he gazed! No single incident has ever been made known by which the mysterious disappearance and still more mysterious re appearance, of the jewel. can even be guessed at. The iair relative of the princely donor oL the dagger, who had evinced the most poignant regret at the loss of the cairngorm, was immediatel y written to at her castle in the Highlands with the announcement of the restora tion of the lost jewel. But here agaiu ai ose another romantic circumstance of this mystery—the answer brought back information of her death, which had taken place on the very night of the dis turbance at the chateau Compeigne, and the replacing of the cairngorm in the dagger! The guide-books to Compeigne bear testimony to the absence of the jewel during the last two seasons. The reprint of this year will tell of its restoration. The story is given here as told by the Emperor to his circle of visitors, and as certified by the inhabitants of the cha teau. The Sunday crowd of visitors to Compeigne during the summer have been bidden to notice the cairngorm, as a series of curious coincidences were attached to it, but until his Majesty related them clearly and neatly they had hot been told in their complete form as above. Log; Rolling. An Englishman who was traveling on the Mississippi river, told some rather tough stories about theliondon thieves. A Cincinnati chap named Chase heard the narratives with a silent but expres sive “humph,” and then remarked that he though the Western thieves beat the London operators all hollow. “Why so,” inquired the Englishman with surprise; “pray have you lived much in the West?” “Not a great deal; I undertook to set up business at Des Moines Eapids, a while ago, but the rascally people stole nearly everything I had.” “Just to give you an idea of how they can steal out there,” continued Chase; sending a sly wink to the listening com pany, “just to give you an idea—did you ever work in a sawmill?’ ’ “Never.” “Well, my brother one day bought an all-fired black walnut log—four feet three at the butt, and not a knot in it. He was determined to keep that log, so he hired two Scotchmen to watch it all night. Well,.they took a small demi john of whisky with them, snaked the log up the side of a hill, and then sat down on sideof the log to play cards and drink whisky all night—and as it began to grow light they went asleep astrad dle of the log. About a minute after daylight my brother went out to see how they got on, and the log was gone!’’ “And they sitting on it? ” “Sitting on the bark. The thieves had drove an iron wedge into the butt end, which pointed down hill, hitched a yoke of oxen on,And pulled it right out, leaving the shell and the Scotch men sitting astraddle of it, fast asleep.” The Englishman here arose, dropped his cigar stump into the spittoon, and looking at his watch, said he thought he would go on deck and see how far we would be down the river by the morning.
