EVENING BULL ETIN. TUESDAY, APRIL 17. 1866 McDOIIGALL. If James A. McDougall,. of California, should be expelled from the Senate of the United States, it.would probably be denounced by the copperheads as "an other outrage of the Radicals." If Sen ator Saulsbury were treated in the same way, the .same comment would probably be made. For these two common drunkards are ardent supporters of Presi dent Johnson's policy, and to expel them would be considered a kindred offence to the ousting of Mr. Stockton. Yesterday McDougall, being in his usual beastly state of intoxication, in dulged in a tirade of vile, pro fane, obscene and generally disgust-. ing abuse of his colleague, Senator Con ness, which exceeded anything ever be fore heard in either house of Congress. A low ,groggery or brothel could hardly ever have echoed fouler language. The Senate bore it with a. patience that is almost incomprehensible; but if it should not resent and condemn the out sage upon its own dignity and the de cency of the country at largc., by the' prompt expulsion of the offender, then we shall be disappointed. It is intol erable that the nation should be dis graced by the continued presence of this brawling sot in the Senate chamber. It is mortifying that he should be sup posed to represent, in any way, a great, prosperous, intelligent State like Cali fornia. OER NORTHERN FRONTIER. Lieutenant-General Grant aarived in Philadelphia yesterday. Major-General Meade and his staff left Philadelphia last evening for Eastport, Maine. The coincidence is noteworthy, and it is a Blot unnatural inference that the Com nianderof the Department of the Atlan tic goes, by order of the Commander-1u- Chief, to preserve order and enforce the neutrality laws on our border, where the Fenians- are organizing for the invasion of the British provinces. The Govern znent, for the first time, is dispose' to regard the Fenian movement as likely to *Manger our friendly relations with Great Britain. Naval vessels have ar rived in Eastport harbor, off which lies the island of Campo-hello, and others are ordered thither. The sudden depar ture of Major-General Meade and his staff, in the same direction, indicates that the state of affairs on the frpntier is /regarded as quite critical. • THE DEERIING 'ln our local columns will be found a full report of the testimony taken by the Coro ner's inquest last evening, in the case of this dread tragedy. The detectiies, with moat commendable skill and industry, have worked up an array of evidence against the accused which leaves no loom for doubt as to his guilt, and even discarding in toto his own partial confession, there is vastly more clear and undeniable testimony than -would be needed to consign him to the .gal lows. The sum and substahee of the evi deuce elicited yesterday may be briefly summed up. We pass over the circumstance of the finding of the bodies of the murdered fam ily as too familiar to every reader to need repetition, and we can only judge of the condition of the homestead, on the Saturday morning of the terrible tragedy, by the state in which it was found when the deed of blood was brought to light on the following Wednesday. Of Mr. Deering's movements we have more certain knowledge. We first find him in a light wagon, at a market wagon, at Eighteenth and South sheets, where he buys a piece of beef for the Sunday dinner of his family. This is between eight and nine o'clock. He told the butcher that he was in a hurry, as he had to go to Mr. Mitchell's at Sixteth and Arch streets, and then drive from there to the boat to meet a cousin (Miss Dolan) who was to come down the river from Burlington. At the house of Mr. Mitchell (who was his principal in business), he made a payment of cash, remarking that he was short of money, ten dollars in small Greenbacks were refunded to him. He is presumed to have driven to the Nutt and then towards his home, for at twenty minutes of ten o'clock we find him chatting with an old lady with whom he was acquainted at the extreme lower part of Second street, and expressing to her his regret that he had missed his cousin. While he and the old lady were chatting, the missing cousin came insight, on foot, and Mr. Deering, driving over to where she was, he took her up, and 'together they drove towards his home. He must have reached there before ten o'clock, and his murder must have taken place al most on the moment of his arrival, as his gloves were still on when his body was dis covered on Wednesday. The murder of Miss Dolan must have followed hard upon that of Mr. Deering, not .more than a few minutes at most elapsing. This was at ten o'clock, and the murderer had the day before him. How did he spend it? We do not believe he remained at the place any longer than was necessary to secure the plunder, which was doubtless the principal object of his horrid crimes; still the first seen of him was in Front street, near Coates, at eight o'clock in the evening of Saturday. He spent the night there in debauchery, and was seen about in various places in the same neighborhood until Thursday. Early in the evening of that day the left a boon com panion at Lakefeld's tavern in New Mar ket street, telling him that he was going to Germany the next morning. -About an hour after he was accosted and arrested as he was about to cross the Market street bridge to_ West Philadelphia. Daring his drunken carouse from Saturday nightuntil Thursday evening almost every cent which he spent can.be traced. The sum "total was about fourteen or fifteen dollars. Ten dol lars he took from the pocket-book of Mr. Deering, together with the pocket-book it self; four more he realized from the sale of the watch of the murdered man. It is in' evidence that he had no more money with him and that the satchel with its terrible tell-tale contents, was left as a ,pledge for a debt incurred in small gam bling and drinking. Where then were the two fifty-dollar notes and the twenty dollar note which were known to have been in the possession of Miss Dolan? 5 00 4 00 2 50 In 50 Woo Our theory is that, leaving the house of the Deerings during the day of the murders he struck for the westward and crossed over into the Twenty-fourth Ward either by the Gray's Ferry bndge or the Penrose Ferry bridge, and setting apart the ten dollars of Mr. Deering and the supposed gold watch for a debauch of a few days, he secreted the one hundred and twenty dollars to pay his expenses to Europe, and then came to the city for "a spree." Every soul of the Deer ing family wai . tdead and the convenient hay would cover up the dread secret for a time; there would not even be the cry of a littlein fant to create suspicion, for all Are dead; and he would have time for a safe debauch. On Thursday he learned that the crime had been discovered, for Iv heard the officers of the law inquiring for him, and it was then time for him to look out for his own safety, and telling his old crony that he was going toGermany the day following, he lets cum at tea time and at eight d'olock he was stopped as he was about to cross the Market Street bridge. Take this view of the case, and his strangely careless and aimless wan derings were not without pianand purpose. We believe the one hundred and twonty dollars taken from the murdered girl are now secreted in West Philadelphia, and that this sum was set apart for the ftnalescapetto Europe. The story of an accomplice we do not consider worthy of a moment's con.. sideration. 'GOVERNOR CUR rm. The Legislature, just before its adjourn ment, passed unanimously a vow of thanks to Governor Curtin. This, we think, is without a precedent at the end of a second term of office, and as, several times during the war, similar votes were passed, His Excellency must feel highly gratified, especially as on each occasion the honor was wholly unexpected. The Governor's health has been seri ously impaired by the excessive fatigues and anxieties he went through during the war. He will leave his office poor in health and in fortune, but with the proud conciousness that he di i his duty faithfully, and that the people, as well as their representatives, are grateful to him.
