A moat etroclous murder was perpetrated in the ulty Park (which la bounded by Flmhlng overate, Pirk avenue, Canton and Navy etreets) Brooklin, on Wednesday night. The name of the yietim IS Jose Garcia Otero, a Cuban, the Proprietor of a theatreln Havana, and the sop rd PerPetnitode trained Joee Gonzalas..who represented as about 40 years of age, five feet eight Inches in bight, dark complexion, black hair and thin black mustache. Last Bummer Jose Garcia Ortega, keeper of a public bonze and, billiard saloon In Cardenas, Cuba, drew -a capital prize of 810.000 In the Royal Lottery of - Havana. He resolved to Invest thia money la a new theatre In Cardenas, and In pursuance of Ibis resolve sailed for New York to purchase paraphernalia therefor. It may or may not be tree that any person, with murder. one Intent, clot: passage from Havana in the steamer that bore Otega hither; but certain It -a that when he arrived mad took apartments at the Hotel de Barcelona, in Great Jones qtreet, on the 16th Inst., he was accompanied by a per. son who acted as interpreter. The body of deceased was discovered by some citizens who Informed the officers of the fact. On making a auperficial examination, it at • once became apparent that the man had been murdered. In-searching his pockets a receipt was found, fronitylitch it appears that the deceased stopped at-the _Barcelona Hotel In Great Jones-st.,New York. Detective Wondelly was at once nest to the hotel (It was now near morning)ould there aacer talnedxhat the deceased hapt boarded there for several dais; that he warthe proprietor of a theater In Hayana, and had come to New York for the purpose of purchasing machinery, Ac., to fit up his place of anittiementi that he had a large amount of money with him, which he car ried at out his person: The detective was fur ther Informed that the deceased had been called npori the evening previous by an acquaintance named Jose Gonzales, and that- they took tee together at about 1 o'clock. Alter tea, Gan mks proposed to take a walk. Otero assented, end having no ready change except gold, got the clerk to change a $lOO bill. He put the change carelessly in hie pantaloons pocket. The clerk told Mr. Otero substantially : "Yon are a stranger here, and as you carry a good deal of money about yen, vou had better leave It here and it will be safe." The friend of Gen e.t.a spoke up and said they were only go lag out for a short walk, and would rather advise Otero:to keep witanwer money he had about him; levres as - Ufa about his portion, and perhaps more en than here (at the hotel). Tfr. Otero took his friend's advice, and they left. Ho wars ermdacterlabout mile from the Fulton Fall, through the darkest streets In the city, and through a park which was not lighted. In the centre Of this pork; equidistant between the corner of Parlrave. and Canton-at. and Navy et. and filnatung-ave., the murder was cam. matted, and although llte park Is amere agitate, small In extent, nearly surrounded by Warded dwellings, not a human being beard theertes or the groans of the dying man. The body -was accidentally discovered. As soon as the police ascertained that It was a murder, they took-lanterns and searched the neighborhood where the tragedy took place. A duk tavola. Several strokes were dealt with the dag ger after that. but did not penetrate far. The razor was then doubtless brought Into requisi tion, and the unfortunate man was cot and has ked until life was extinct. The razor need is a peculiar one. The back is so formed that the blade is fastened by means of a screw, and when one blade becomes dull another can be enbstituted with very little trouble. A razor case was also discovered; it Is of yellowish leather and it contained two blades. One blade was found is the grass. It had beeline detatehed from the handle in the murderous work. The other razor had a trans parent yellow bundle and Is rather an ordinary affair. The deceased was a man about 5 feet 7 inches in height, of powerful frame, and It is supposed by some that more than one man was engaged in the bloody work, as from his ap pearance he was doubtless able to make strong resistance. It la eupposed that he had shoat his person, some SNOW or 810.000 in gold and bills. Two hundred dollars in gold, wrapped up in paper (like a bunch of 25 rent pieces) woe found in his rest pocket, and 016 in bills—all American money. None of the change he re , ceived at the hotel was found, nor was anything else discovered besides his pocket book, contain ing his hotel receipt and some other papers. •liis clothing was all new, haricot. been purchas ed within a few days, and was of good quality. Ronndstrien Smith, of the Forty-fourth Pre ciect, who had been detailed at Pier No, 4, North River, to watch the passengers embark. leg on the anteater Eagle, bound for Havana (other Mikan being detailed at the piers where steamers were expected to leave) at length saw a yotteg man whose permed appearance was totally unlike the person (Joao Gonzales) of whom be was le search. He was ordered to remove them by thaolloar, and on doing so several mots were visible 03 the bark of his hands, corresponding with the cuts en the gloves found In the Park near the murdered man, and which are supposed to have been worn by one of the murderers, and may have been torn off in the struggle. By permission and the re ' Quest of the owners of the Line, he Inserted a Lumber of thermometers, In the port boiler, (the one which exploded), for the purpose of ascertaining the different temperatures in the Interior of the same. The following shows the temperature at stated points : Below the water line, 216 degrees; In the steam, from 395 to 500 degrees; 13 inches above the rupture of the 39th of October, 500 degrees; 12 Inches below the 39th of October, 269 degrees. The surface of the water In the boiler oscilla ted up and down six inches. alternately heating the plate by exposure to the hot-steam of 500 degrees, and cooling It by contact with the water at 269 degrees. It is (carted to contem plate when we now know that a 'ridden change of 251 degrees is constantly occurring In these bolters; and the certain effect intuit be, with such entutuslon and °ants/salon to permanent ly weaken the plates of the boiler. These ex periments have already created a great salsa- Hon among boiler makers and engineers. Be fore the St. John left on her ling trip a lame number of well-known mechanics examined the experiment for themselves and expressed great surprise at the new and practical dbinovery. Mr. nod elaims that he hes ffnmilthe simple safe and sure remedy to equalize the tempera ture In the boilers, and ell those who have wit nessed the &Octant experiments believe It can be done. If this he so, then the puille should demand that every boiler should thus be guard. ed against the frequent and generally unaccount able exPlesions. The Jury In the cuss of the St. John could find noperson guilty, but then they failed to give seance why that boiler, eel. deuUy of good material, should give way with ordinary end lawful pressure. If all boilers have so much oecilliatlon, and consequently so wide a ranges( expansion and contraction, then the problem of - 'unaceruntabie , boiler exPloslotta is solved.—N. P, Tratune.
