JOHN DREW SPEAKS Dlitlngulthed Acter In "The Circle'-' Talk en Stage .fehn Drew, 6ne el the deans of American actors and co-star in W. Somerset MnuKhan's comedy, "The Circle," which comes te the Lyric The atre next Monday, is frank In speaking of the stage and Uh peeple, "The stage," he says, "seems gen erally te reach its pinnacle when, it produces great tragic actors. There are no great pluscm qf tragedy today be cause no one has produced a great tragedy. That doesn't say there isn't material among the actors for tra gedians. I consider Mrs. Fiskc and Ethel Barrymeru the two leading actresses of today, and they are both capable of deep emotiennl feeling. Mar garet Anglin is also looked upon as an actress of fine qualifications in this line, though I never saw her in a serious play. I saw her as a comedienne and she was delightful. "Comedy Seems te be mere prevalent today than ever, and we certainly ap pear te be developing u large breed of very finished comedians, though that does net mean we arc mere superficial. Comedy is in bemc respects much mere difficult an art than tragedy, though net be striking in its moving effects. We have some very fine comedians in such men as Frank Craven. And, of course, there is Maude Adams. I sin cerely hope she will come back te the stage." t Mias Jarderi'a Operatic Career The nppcarance of Dorethy .Turden en the bill at U. F, Keith's here next week recalls the fact that It was the death of Slgner Campnnlnl, director of the Chicago Opera Cempapy, that pre vented Miss Jarden from realizing the greatest ambition of her operatic career and resulted lti her retirement from the grand opera stage. Cnmpnninl gave Miss Jarden her lirst opportunity, and for hi m she nng-the title rele in "Fe "Fe eora." She was te play "Zaza" with Tltta HufFe, but en Campanini's death she left the company believing she euld have had no chance there. Had Camp-Meeting Debut j.
