XANCASim DAILY nCTEJLUeENCEB, WEDNESDAY, MAY 16. 1883. Ir' Xanrastrr fnteUfgjjtttr. WEDNESDAY EVENING, MAY 16, 1883. THE APPLE TREE. That old apple-trcc there standla' Like a sent'nel by my deer, With Its wind-wooed leaves an' branches Makln' shadows en my fleer, la a part e that old homestead la a mem'ry e' the place. Cnt It down, sir ? Ah, I'd miss It As a long familiar lace ! Net for a'l the golden eagles Ten could count me In a da y. Would I lese that boyhood treasure. Should you take that tree away. Queer talk, mister, for a Urine r, Telllu' en irem year te year ; But who'll put a price en heart-throbs. Tell the worth e stnlle or tear ? Bound that tree I played In childhood, On them branches climbed an' swung. Eat 1U apples green an ripened, Found the best were highest bung ; Saw the robin build there yearly, Werkln' hard, net huntln' eas3, " Saw them rear their little, nestlings, Cradled by the summer breeze. De you knew I loved them robins. Watched them as their wings grewed strong, Felt that they went en a mission, With their wondrous tale e' aeng ? An' no song can miss its mission, Be It sung by bard or bird, Fer some heart some time will hear it, An' be blessed because It heard. An' It's net just such a trifle Te have given life a song, Te have given Time a flower. As he sternly gees along ; Be I'm kind e' proud-like, stranger, O' the robins hatched out theie, Fer I knew they're missionaries, Tcllln' glad news well, semcwhei e ! An' right there beside the trunk, sir. Mether used te set an' lead, Teachln' me life's dearest lesion. Simply Christ without a creed ! Touched me lessens that your HJLwet, sir. Couldn't vvci comprehend. Leve the teacher, love the pupil, Leve the lessen, heaven tbe end : An' she used tosingtheie ter me, With her volce divinely sweet, If the world could but have hcaid it, It would knelt, tee, at her leet. I could hear Us Scottish murmur. As of Alten mother sung. See It glide in crystal beauty Braes an' valleys green among. Highland Mary always brought the Tears e Berrow te my eye, An' my young heart burned with Uruce's, Longed villi him te " de or die !" Se 1 guess that tree may stay there, Share the storms an'sun with me. Fer I'll always have a friend left While I have that apple-tree. 8ee it new, se full e' blossoms. Brightest smilu en summer's cheuk ; Hear the beesa-hummln' through it, See, the birds a rest there seek ; An' I've thought It's but a iancy That perhaps it's Aaren's red. Bloemln' there beside my doorstep, As a token Irem my Ued ! De you see that ether blossom, Stranger, standln' in the deer. With the shadows restlu' en her, In their journey te the fleer ? That's the blossom that lias grewed, sir. On the branches e' my life. Where's the king with such a kingdom As my apple-tree au' wile ? Will F. McSparran in "Saturday Fight." The Print of the eleu's Iland . Denten American Union. On the side of the public read between this place and Harris' cbapel, Tuckahoe Neck, Nd., stands a large sized poplar tree, perhaps three feet in diameter at the ground, and en the bark, some ten feet from the base, is the mark of a human hand, which it has born for about twenty years past. It was produced in the fel lowing manner : In 1802, James Wilsen, a bright mulatto, about twenty-three years of age, committed a terrible crime upon a little child. He was hunted down, owned the crime, and was ledged in our jail. A few nights afterward he was forcibly taken from the jail ant? hung and shot in the rear of that building by the infuriated populace of the neighborhood in which the crime was per petrated. After he was dead his body was cut in pieces and burned en the outskirts of the town. But one of the hands, cut off at the wrist, was taken in charge by some one, and with a geed sized nail was spiked te this poplar tree. It remained there until it decayed, aud new the hand print, full size, may be seen en the bark of the tree, the nail which held it in position still fast in the tree. We visited the spot last week and can vouch for the correctness of the above statement. Tonic, alterative and cathartic; read adver tisement et Simmons Liver Uegulater. Give Jlllui a Kest.
