Hy kingdom for a horse'!'? cried Kicbard IIL en, the bloody' Held of Boawertb, four hundred years age. Had Kicbard of Yerk li red 'in our lime. and Visited Lancaster, ' Pennsylvania,- he Wanted either te hire or te buy, without Haerttiiciujr his kingdom. Iu' twelve livery stables of thin' city there are about 150 horses of all sertB and size, from the pony te the Fercheren, from the ambling pal frey te the 2:20 trotter, from which the hump-backed king might have taken his pick and choice terms c?sb. Or, if he preferred te buy aherse, or a whole drove of horses,' be could have been accommoda ted at a moment' b net;ce by G. Gressman, Cy. Celvin, Dan Legan, Fiss & Deerr, or anyone et a dozen ether reliable dealers, and he' would have been given a warranty and sixty days credit if his paper was well endorsed. Fer be it, knew a te all men by these presents that Lancaster city has become one of the greatest horse markets in the country, and that our county takes rank with the famous blue grass reeien of Ken. tuiky, in the feediug if net in the breeding efpbrses. J 50,000 la tne County JVe have net the effimal statistics of the rent year at hand, but the report, made by! the assessors for last year attews that there were then 24,417 herr38, mares and guldings in the county ever four years old. There were probably as many under four yekrs old, and when we remember hew reluctant farmers (as well as ether people) are td make a full return of their taxable property, it is fair te presume," that the number returned by the assessors is far below the real number. Think of the farci cal returns of geld watches made 'by the lessors ! They can't find in the who!e cehnty as many as are carried in a single township. A moderate estimate, there fore, of the number of horses, 'mares, geld ings and colts, would be 50,000. As the assessors put the value "of the 24,417 horses at 1,427,305 less than 59 per head the 50,000 at the same rate would be worth nearly $3,000,d00, which is preb ably below rather than above 'the true valne. Bnt even this large Bum only partly rep resents the value of the horses in Lancaster county. Large numbers of them are brought from ether counties, ether spates and Canada, aud placed by. the drovers and dealers in the hands of the farmers, te be fattened aud put into condition for the Philadelphia, New Yerk and Bosten markets. These are net included in the assessors' return, nor would it be fair te include them, because they may have been assessed in the districts in- which they were purchased. ' Fattened by tbe Farmers. Most of these hordes are frqm four te seven years old, well boned, but generally out of condition. They are brought here by Geerge Gressman, Daniel Lejju, Mr. Baily, of Keutucky, James H. Stockman, Bltzer&Keppcrliug aud a dozen ether drevers'aud dealers.. Many of them are sold directlv te the farmers and liverymen for their own use. A larce portieu of them are bent te the country te beard with the farmers, who leceive en an aver ace 10 per mouth for their keep. They are stabled from two te hve months, are bountifully bnpplied with the best of feed, carefully groomed, aud aie net allowed te de any hard work some of them de no work,at all. In fact, they are fattened just as steers are fattened for slaughter. After a few mouths of this kind of geed living they come out of the stables as round and sleek as moles, and as frisky and playful as COltS BUWU WUIgulU mime uuuuii;uu vr. peuuds mere than when it went into the feeding stall. Then they are ready for the market They are taken from the country Btables add gathered together in this city. Some times they are shipped by. rail directly te the eastern markets. These shipments are made almost every week, aid it is no uncommon thing for a single firm te send thirty, forty, or fifty at asingle shipment. Ah average of 100 per week, or ever 5,000 per year, would net be an extravagant estimate of the number shipped from this city. The horsemen new say there are mera shipped than brought in and, that consequently the number in the county is steadily decreasing and the price .advauc inkr. They cemplaiu thateur.farmers de net breed and raise enough 'horses, owing te. the lack of pasture lands and' the ab sorption of the soil for tobaceoculture. It is quite inspiriting te ""sea drove of fine horses leaving the stables preparatory te being placeu en tne cirs. vJney come upon the street four abreast a stabjeman riding ene and leading three. If he sells ten. horses a week and makes 50 en reach of them, he makes $500 per week, or 26,000 per year! if Frem the reports made of the shipment of horses from this city it would appear that some of- tuem average censiaejaDiy mbre than ten head pur week and ought, therefore, te have larger profits.
