Sumatra, Seed Leaf nd Havana ler the Week Knalng Saturday, April 28. 10 a. in U. 3. Tobacco Journal. Sumatra Sales 300 bales. Out of town jobbers and local manufacturers were the main takers. Transactions will net be very extensive in tbe next few days, as buyers are awaiting samples of tbe new, which, it is expected, will arrive bere next week. Seed Leaf While the week just passed bas-again been marked by a spirit of do de do jectien aud general apathy, it can reason ably be expected that tbe next ana some of the follewingjwcoks will be character ized by an improvement, at least as far as the number of buyers and tbe number or transactions arc concerned. The great ac cumulation of cigars ready for shipment will leave tbe factories early next week, allowing manufacturers thereafter te in spect the leaf market at the necessary leisure. We advise holders te unload at the lowest price possible, new that an op portunity of, at least, making sales will be offered. It is our most positive conviction thai the market throughout the summer will be languid and inactive. The new tobacco will be fit for manipulation in fac tories unusually early this year, and there fore prospective buyers will bridge ever till then, unless they can buy the old stoekB at very low figures. Connecticut seconds were most sought after this week, and several hundred cases were sold at from 10$ te 11 cents. TheHe figures are se much out of proportion te theso the sanguine packers expected te realize that once mere our predictions, made early iu the packiug season, have proved true. Most of the investments in '82 Connecticut were made with a view of obtaining 15 te 10 cents, or even mere, for the seconds. We warned investors against following theories like this. The result is the realization of figures tlrat can can net be called paying ones, unless the wrap pere bring a hi;h figure. Such an event appears exceedingly remote. The sales of the week were : Connecticut Crep '82 : 00 cabea, 10 te 11 cents. Ohie Crep '81 : 400 cases, low grades, at 5 te C cents. Pennsylvania Crep 'SO : 200 cases, 7 te 13 cents. Crep '81 : 100 cases, reported sit, 14 cents. Havana Market very active. Sales 750 bales. Prices from 90 cents te $1.30. Sixty bates of wrappeis were sold at $2.40. UniiH- Repert. Seed Leaf Dealers and packers are very quiet, "especially in the handling of old leal; in fact, for the present the bulk of the time of backers is taken up iu 1882 crop, of which a large quantity of various kinds have been packed by our city deal ers ; nevertheless, a liner line of goods of all grades would be hard te find than that new held by dealers. Prices are moderate he that we leek very shortly for " better times." Sumatra finds favor in a small way, while Havana coutiuuer. te gradually im prove iu all grades which deserve attention at full figures. There has been great activity among buyers during the past week, but it is im possible te find out the extent of their operations. Wherever they hear of an unsold crop they pest off aud leek at it, sometimes driving many miles for the purpose. They generally buy, but seldom tell what they pay ; and latterly the farm ers have become almost as close mouthed as the buyers, and it is with difficulty the terms of sales can be obtained. It is gen erally conceded, however, that net ono eno one cighih of the crop remains iu the hands of the growers; that a large proportion of it is low grade goods, and the bulk of the geed goods remaining unsold will be pack ed by the grewers and held for a rise. A woek'er two mere will probably wind up the season for the purchase of new to bacco. There was a geed deal of activity in the old tobacco market also last wcek, aud the crop of 1S31 is growing in favor. Helders ' are firm, and even theso who bought at high figures, and were willing a few weeks age te sell at a sacrifice, are new mere hopeful and demand a margin of profit. New that the revenue tax en tobacco aud cigars has taken effect it is hoped and believed that both dealers in and man ufacturers of tobacco and cigars will be benefitted, aud that thcre will be mere stability in the trade than has existed for many months past. The farmers are doing very little yet towards getting in the crop of 18S3. The unusually backward spring, the succes sion of late snow storms with frequeut heavy frosts, have tended te deter opera tiens. Frem Various sections et the coun ty reports come that that the farmers will cultivate less tobacco this year than they have been in the habit of cultivating. The reasons given are that the crop at all times is an uncertain ene, subject te ruin by draught, bail, ilea-bite and ether causes, and that the prices received for the past year's crop were net remunerative, and that larger and surer returns from the outlay of labor and capital may be made by cultivating ether crops. Then the scare started that the importation of Sumatra tobacco wenld drive Pennsylvania leaf out of the market has had something te de in determining our farmers te devote less time and space te the weed. Our Bart correspondent says : A few lets of tobacco have been sold in the two past weeks amounting te about 5 aeres; we have been unable te get the prices. Ken dig was the purchaser. Buyers occasion ally pass through, but de net step longer than time enough te " wet up " at Fritz's, and tell Mm the market has gene te the dogs. Helders don't appear te ' scare worth a cent."
