No reporters were admitted. Writs of Habeas Oorpaa. At 10 o'clock this morning John Drach bar, who was committed to prison for SO days, by Alderman Samson, for being drunk and disorderly on Saturday night, as noted elsewhere, was taken belore Judge Patterson, on a writ of habeas cor pus, and his dischargo was asked for. It was shown that he had been held to an swer at court on two charges of assault and battery, and bad also been committed for being drunk and disorderly. It was claimed that the lesser offense was merg ed in the greater, all of them having taken place at one ono time, and tho defendant should be discharged. The committing alderman was present, and he testified that the offenses all occurred at the same timo. The man was discharged. John Brimmer, who was committed for 20 days, will bo heard on a writ at a lato hour this afternoon. Thanks from Oscar Wilde. Owing to a dispute betwoen the tsuperiu ftondent of the water works and tho county commissioners, relative to tho water rent, the superintendent yesterday shut off tho water from the pipes that supply tho court house, causing constcrnatiou and in convenience to the county officers' and employees. It appears that this year the superintendent taxed the county $130 for the use of tho water while only from $90 to 110 had been paid in former years. The commissioners refused to pay the in crease but paid $109.25 on account. Hav ing failed to pay the balauoo after dnc notice given tbe superintendent shut off the water. A consultation was had this morn ing and tho matter was adjusted, the superintendent making a deduction of $5 and tho commissioners paying tho balance after which tho water was turned on. - galea or Real JSstato. Something of a panic was created last evening by a report that one of the walls of tbe east reservoir had given way. The report proved to be unfounded and grow out of tho fact that forsomo timo past the basin has been leaking a good deal near the southeast corner, and fears have been entertained that tho wall might give way. The superintendent reports that the leak is not much, if any larger than it has been heretofore. A break in tbo east basin at this timo would be very disastrous, as tho west basin has been emptied for tbo pur poso of having it cleaned. Died or Uls Injuries. Benjamin Engroft, who had his skull fractured on Saturday evening by falling through tho trestle work on tbe north side of the railroad bridge at Graeff's Landing, died yesterday afternoon. Mr. Engrofi was about 35 yeara of ago, and was an industrious, hard-working man and faithful officer. He leaves a wife and two children. Philadelphia Sept. 23 Abont half-past four o'clock this morning the dwelling house, No. 923 Wallace street, fell, bury ing several of tho inmates in the ruins. All have been rescued alive except one woman who is still buried. Her voice can be heard, however, and it is supposed that she is not badly hurt. The police and firemen aro working hard to reach her. Later. The woman, Mrs. Roach, was released unhurt after being for three hours in the debris. There wcro seven men in the house when it fell, and it appears now that three of them were quite seriously injared. The building was undermined by tbe recent rains. Since Mrs. Koaoh was taken from the ruins she has been seized with spasms, and it is feared that her injuries, which appeared slight, are fatal. In her fall the bed in which she was lying turned completely over, and when she reached the cellar tho bed clothes wero un der her and the mattress on top. thns shielding her from the avalanche of brick and timber that followed. Harry Roach, a boy, was precipitated from the third-story to the cellar, and was severely injured. Othors of the boarders have broken limbs and are otherwise seriously hurt. Tho board of freeholders of Union county have made a tour of the connty for the purpose of as certaining the amount of damage done by the freshet. Thoy estimate tbe expense to tho county for replacing the twenty seven bridges, which wore washed away, at $100,000. This is exclusive of culverts and damages to roads. An affray oc curred in " Italy," a suburb of this city, last night, whieh resulted fatally to Robert Steward, colored, aged 23 years. Steward was attacked with a knife and pistol by an Italian named Charles Oardella, aged 50, and received a bullet in the back from the effects of which he died this morning. The murder was incited by jealousy of Steward's attention to a colored woman. Diamonds Stolen at an Exposition. Cincinnati, Sept. 28 Twelve thousand dollars worth of diamonds and valuable jewelry were stolen at tho exposition building shortly after the doors were open ed this morning. They were stolen from the exhibit of C Oscamp, who kept them in a show case. Two men walked up to the stand, opened tho caso, selected what thoy wanted out of tho valuable stock aud cooly walked off.
