I'AYINO UBB MITIS TO CVOP-R. hcdnn at the Headquarter When Girl Came Wltta Two Dollars. Philadelphia Times. At the liagular Republican headquar ters yesterday afternoon, while Secretary Taggert and half a scoro of clerks were busy at desks and tables in the main room, a young girl, about eighteen years of age, of prepossessing appearance and plainly but neatly dressed, came in. Hes iutingas she entered the room, in evident embarrassment sho asked : " Is Senator Thomas V. Cooper in ?" " Ho is not," said Secretary Taggert, rising and walking forward. " Can I do anything for you ?" 1 ve brought my money, saici me girl, drawing out a well-worn old pocket book and taking out two one-dollar bills. Secretary Taggart was at once himself again. Jumping into his chair at the table again, he asked the girl to sit down, while he opened a drawer and took out a book. In Senator Cooper's private room at the , same time loud voices and boisterous laughter were heard, and there came out and filled the main room a thick cloud of smoke from fragrant Havana cigars. The pmokers were Senator Cameron, who a few days ago, according to an enthusiastic and admiring Washington letter-writer, sat before a safe of the Guarantee Life and Trust company and clipped coupons for four hours, Secretary Quay and a few boon companions. They woro tolling funny stories and laughing over them. Secretary Taggart, having opened his book, looked across the table at the young woman, who sat abashed, evidently unus ed at such scenes. " How much is it ?" asked the secre tary. "Two dollars," said the girl, tremu lously. She handed the monoy over, the secre tary dropped it into a drawer, turned the key, entered tho sum on a book and began to make out a receipt. " What's your first name ?" he asked. " Emma," said tho girl, timidly. Mr. Taggart wrote it out and hauded her the receipt. "I suppose," said tho girl, rising as she folded the rpceipt, every little Oh, yes," said Mr. Taggart, median i sally. " And it doesn't make any difference my giving it to you instead of Mr. Coooer, does it ?" "Oh.no." said tho amiable secretary. "Good-bye," said the girl, bowing as she withdrew. " Gd-bye," said Mr. Taggart, turn ing to his work. m & Making Wine From Grapes. The grapes should be picked when per feetly ripe, on a dry day, all tho unripe, decayed and imperfect berries being dis carded. Crush them in a small press, (not too severely,) if one ia at hand, or it cau.be dono by the baud iu a largo tub ; let the mass remain in this state for forty-eight hours ; then strain off carefully ; add two quarts of sol t water to oua of juice and one pound oi best yeliow sugar or rocK candy ;" put in a thoroughly-cleansed keg or barrel, so that the vessel is full, leaving off the bung in order that fennontation may have vent and throw out tho impu rities ; fill up with reserved juico to keep the vessel always full. At tho end of two or three weeks, when, the first fermenta tion is over, rack off, drawing the liquor carefully off by keeping it constantly run ning, and removing it into a scaldcd-out tub ; then scaldout the vessel again and return the liquor, leaving tho bung rather loosely in its place, for the second for mentation. When that is over hung up tightly and let it remain for at least six months, or altogether, using as it may be wanted. It is better if racked off at the end of six months or longer and put into from two to fivo gallon demijohns, though the usual bottles will answer well. Unless you want excellent vinegar, be sure too add tho sugar or rock candy. " Do boldly what yon do at all."
