(From our Regular Correspondent.) Washington, Feb. 17th, 190<>. Editor Pre** The of business stopped in Washington to-day while the •laughter of the President was led to the altar. Miss Alice Roosevelt was married to Representative Nic holas liOngwi rth at noon by Bishop Satterlee and all of Washington not bidden to the White House for the ceremony watched and waited while the nuptials were performed. It was the most notable wedding that the capital lias ever known. Miss Roosevelt was the twelfth White House bride. This initself was a distinction. But never be fore has a White House wedding attracted such attention. Never before has there been such a gath ering of society people in the man sion and certainly never before has there been such an array of wed ding gifts. Every country in th« civilized world, even if China is included in that category, was rep resented in the tributes that were showered on the bride. Represen tative Long worth too was remem bered in a way. But it was not his day. The young Ohio mem ber, who has already won for him self a very fair reputation as anew Congressman was distinctly not in the running. He was an adjunct to the ceremony, but that was all, and that was as it should be. Miss Alice was the object of interest of the day and continued to be till the couple quietly stole away to ward evening in an electric broug ham for the honeymoon, which it is understood will be spent in a country homstead just outside of Waskington. The Executive offices at the White House were closed all day. There was no business transacted for the first time perhaps since Mr. Roosevelt has been President. Promptly at 10 a. in., the gates of the White House were closed and thereafter there was 110 entrance without one of the magic admis sion cards. There were a little short of a thousand guests present, a gathering that crowded to the utmost the East Room where the ceremony was performed. Only ten representatives of the press were present, the three members of the local papers, the three press associations and four personal newspaper friends of Representa tive Longworth and the President. But society was represented from all quarters of the country. There were the members of the two famil ies, the justices of the Supreme Court and members of the Cabinet, the members of the Senate Who had formerly held cabinet posi tions, and the general run of in vited guests who included most of the people of prominence whose names usually appear inthesociety volumns of the New York papers. The service was brief but im pressive as the words and the oc casion warranted. The party moved almost immediately after ward to the breakfast room where there was a buffet luncheon for the most of the guests in the Blue Room. The newly married couple, President and Mrs. Roosevelt and about sixty of the guests sat down to the wedding breakfast in the Green Room. The breakfast last ed well into the afternoon. Then came the most interesting and least advertised part of the perfor mance. Mr. Longworth and his bride quietly effaced themselves and left the house in an electric brougham, one of a dozen precise ly alike, that were parked back of the White House. In it they drove away to the country house where they will spend the honey moon. __ F. h. Pcarsoll Practical Painter. Painting ia practical woik. Skill wins. It's the same with paint making. Dear Sir: When you see a well-dressed man, you like to say: ''There's a sample of my clothes. That man is worth two of himslf as he was when he came feme." We have the same feeling. Our paint on a house is worth twice as much as old fashion painter's paint, lead-and-oil. It looks the same when first put on Iu three months it don't. In three years it decidedly don't. Lead-and-oil chalks off in three years: it is considered a first-rate job that lasts three years. Devoe lead-and zinz is about as good in three years as it was the day the painter left it. Zinc is the secret of it; no secret at al'. A good many painters know zinc; some mix it in with their lead. We grind it in; not a little, good deal. It's the zinc and the grinding that does it. You can't mix zinc by hand. We grind it in by machinery. Painters are finding us out, though some painters are slow. You know that it pays a good man to wear good clothes. How many customers have you that know it. Yours truly F. W. DEVOE & Co., New York. P. S. Murry & Coppersmith sell our paint. DON T DOSE THE""ITOMACH. In the March number The Delineator has fallen under the spell of romance which the forthcoming marriage of the President's daughter has evoked, and presents as its leading feature an article on"The Brides of the White House," illustrated with a handsome portrait of Miss Roosevelt never before published. The fiction of the number includes a short story by Mary Stewart Cutting, a clever study of child life by Virginia Woodward Cloud, and the continua tion of"The President of Quex," Helen M. Viola Allen, the popular young actress, who recently married a south ern millionaire, writes of Shakespeare's heroines from the point of view of one who has personated many of them with great success.
