All r,f the bribery cinvicts except Kemble appeared In Hnrrlsburg last Monday, and entered new bail for their appearance at the next kca.'ion of the court for senteucc. Tho unanimous verdict of the pre I lh.it Judge Patterson, of Lancaster county, in hit action in dismnjlng from tho bar Mrsars Stctnman & Henel, (or certain pub llcatloil made at editors of tho lutttligeneer, has made a ridiculous mtiis of It. The su premo court will undoubtedly sustain tli" decision of tho press. ClilCAOOjMnrch 23. A special to the Timet fmui Oconomoevoe, Wis., reports that lt.i- mus Larker, of Waukesha county, was tar red and feathered there last night by n mo' if masked citizens. Larker had becu th' loverotaMis I'orre of that coiintv until she married Albert Stlelow, of Milwaukee It i.s aliened, for his money. After her innr- riage she kept up her intimacy with Larker and finally tlcerteil Stielnw and wet t t livo with Larker. This aroured the wrath of tho citizetn.which culminated in tho tarrintr and feathering last night. We clip the above item from a dispatch to the Associated Press. Larker's crime is not a raro or peculiar one. It is ofdaiL occurrence, and it is fair to presume that where one comes to light, hundreds are sup pressed. As a rule we are opposed to Lynch law, certainly in all cases where justice can be meted out out through tho forms of law. But this cannot always be done, ami tho people, in self defence, must then ta! the law into their own hands. This is par ticularly tho case on our western frontiers, and among newly discovered gold or silier regions. Desperadoes of all classes flock thither. Courts, if established, are some times too weak to executo the law, and some times judges, juries and jailors aro easily tampered with. The Vigilantes of Calilor nia did moro to purify that State than the courts, and to day the secret citizens' com mittee does moro to suppress violence than courts or the ballot box. True, Judf,e Lypch may not always bo unerring, Neith er are the courts.- I!ut the way to suppress crime is not only to have the laws strictly enforced, but they should bo severe enough to deter tho crimi nal. Now there are a certain class of crimes for which the law does not prescribe adequate punishment, and the i'uet is a disgrace to our civilizition. Foi instance, parents rear ten-, derly and carefully a daughter. She is their pride and hope. Hut iu an evil hour the tempter comes in human guise, lie maybe handsome, of pleasing address, well connect ed, and she listens to his honied words aud sworn protestations. Either through devot ed love, faith in his pledges, or hopes of es caping the common drudgeriescf lifefor the ease and comforts promised her, tho girl yields, and is ruined for life. The hearts of her parents are broken. She is an outca-t from society; sneered at by those of her sex who have been more rigid, or if not, have concealed it better. Sometimes the outraged woman, or infuri ated father or brother, despairing of justice by legal methods, takes the law into his own hands and another crime is added to the calendar. Sometimes the victim Is driven to suicide, often to infanticide, and in many instances to a lift) of prostitution, and an in nocent child, if it survives, has an iuheri tanre of shame, which a noble life can hard ly eirace. The man, on the contrary, is the hero of his envious set, plans new conquests, ami peihaps marries into some renpeclnlle fainilj , which calls his crime "sowing a little wild oats." Hut what ishts punishment? A mild law permits him, if impecunious, to become a "gentleman" boarder at the county jail, for three months where he is lionized by vi-lts and presents Irom relatives and admirers from both sexes. He then goes scot free. Or, wishing to travel, he goes amoug distant friends aud awaits events perhaps settles dowu, or compromises his crime. Another young man with means of his own, or with well-to do and adoriog parents, who of course blamo the girl, pays a nominal One, and a few dollars a month for a limited time. Of course the case is worse when the tempter enters the family circle; when the most sacred ties are broken, and wife, per baps children, are left alone iu the world, and sometimes destitute, Men may laugh and women smile at the ruin mad", but. they cannot know the evil wrought. The guilty are seldom punished as the records of the courts show, and no wonder an out raged community sometimes resort to the mild punishment of a coat of tar and feathers. If our Chriiliani would be half as vigor ous In trying to get severer laws enacted and In seeing them executed as they are in sup pressing intemperance, It would speak bet ter for them, and go far to suppress the evils complained of, Hut then, in too many In -stances; they would have to begin at home There is quite a buzz In Franklin county over tne alleged miracle con cerning a sixteen-year-old lad who was par aletic. About a year ago he became deeply religious, and prayed long and fervently, his supplications frequently being heard all over tho lioure. Lately the family were sum mooed and the lad said : "God, through the mercy of Christ, has not ouly blessed my soul, but has healed my body. Then, making an effort lo rise, ho said: "I must get u"p,"aud in a moment the poor bedrid den loy was tilting upright in their midst, whatever the came, a great and sudden physical improvement in the boy's caso la veil vouched for, WASHINGTON" I,K1 ll'.lt. Wnshliiston,. II C. April Clh, ISSO Two Interesting subjects were dlposed of in the Heme yistetday, and the final settle ment of one of theiu will ilu much to facili tate tl o tratisactinu of public business. I refer to the celebrated transaction of Mr. Weaver, which has stand at the Speaker on every occasion for months, whether resolu tions we.ro in order or not, Until yesterday the Speaker has refused to face the resolu tion, When Mr. Weaver was pointing the rrsolutloii at the Speaker, the Speaker was looking earnestly in some other direction, The anxious Mr, Weaver and his resolution becahio a joke for tho gallery Gods, Yester day the Speaker "saw" Mr. Weaver, aud the ri solution was voted down by ll" nays to So jess. The resolution declares In sub stance that alt money shall be issued by the Government, not by banking institutions, and should be a lull legal lender for all debts; and that tho U.S. bonds becoming due next year should not bo refunded, but be paid ns fast as possible, and that to ena ble the government to meet these obligations tho mints of the country should bo operated to their full capacity In tho coinage of the Standard sliver dollar. The other affair which is, I trust final'y settled, is the Manning-Springer difficulty, growing out of the latter's refusal lo vote to seat Donnelly in place of W'a9hburue, from tho thltd Minnesota District. The trouble was wholly unnecessary, not a member of the Houo believed that Con' grestman Springer was corruptly inllueti' ced. An attempt was mado yesterday to sus pend the rules of the Ilouxe and pass a bill removing duties from certain articles, a two two thirds vote was required, and was not secured. This is considered, I find, a test vote, and thoso who favor leduction aro without hope of success during this session. The nrtlcles Included In the bill were salt, I rintiug paper,&c, and on these, if on any, the necessary votes could have been secured. The moro Influential Senators, are, as is well known, Grant men, just why men like Elmunds, Carpenter and Conkling, should be lor Grmt is not plain. Perhaps they tate to mm as n choice ol evils, prolernug nun to lllaine or Shermau. Tho result is the same. With these men opposed to him Blaine will not bulldoze his way along in the Senate, this year as he did years ago. Hilton. There is a reported conniracy at Enhra ta on the part of somo well known parlies to wnscs themselves ot the title anil property, real ami personal belonging tc the society il Hunkers, whose in-titulinn is located there. So far tho attempt has been defeated by the com t, the members hiving appealed to it lor protection. Hubert Homier has Riven $10,000 to Princeton College, to aid in purchasing h telescope, the instrument, which will cost 2',000,has just been ordered. Mr. John Ii. June 27 1-y No longer can tho marvels of science be woudered at, and the announcement that Dr. Siemens, the celebrated Anew-German man of science, has discovered that the flectric Unlit has power to produce vegetiv tion must be received at least without a laugh. He thinks that be has proved that electric light will promoto tho ripening ot fruit and grain in tho open air: in other words that t he vegetable products ot the eartli need no rest, as man does, but they can work away at growing without cessation contrary to the generally received opinion. It should be the aim of every owner of Horses,Cows,&c.,to make them as handsome and useful as possible. The German Horse and Cow Powder helps to develop all the powers of the animal.
