THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 1871. LITERATUIII. JtEVlSW OF NSW BOOKS. The following new publications from the press of J. B. Lippinoott Jb Oj. have been received: "Horace," by Theodore Martin, is the iith volume of "Ancient Classics for Euglish Headers," which aim to give those who have not the time or inclination to p' ndy the works of the classio authors a satisfactory account of, them. Mr. Theodore Martin, who is favor ably known as a translator of "Ilorace," has in the little volume before us presented a succinct and critical analysis of hla writings, with translations of some of his raost cele brated verses, and to the majority of readers it will convey a better idea of the style of the Roman poet than could probably be obtained from a perusal of his complete writings. This and the others of the same series are useful little books that deserve permanent places in every library, and that may be read with plea sure and profit even by those who plume them selves upon an acquaintance with the classics. "Sergeant Atkins" is a stirring tale of adventure during the Seminole war in Flo rida, from the pen of an officer of the United States army. The author is evidently thoroughly familiar with the characteristics of the swamps and hummocks of Florida, where the soene of the story is laid, and the book, independently of its merits as a narra tive of adventure, contains much interesting information about a portion of the State of Florida that is rarely visited and is but little known. "Steps Upward," by Mrs. Franoes Dana Gage, is a temperance story that obtained much popularity when it was published in the Temperance Patriot, and as the object it has in view is an exoellect one, we hope that it will receive the appreciation it de serves from the publio in its present shape. From J. B. Lippinoott & Co. we have re ceived the following new issues of other pub lishers: "A Second French Reader," compiled by L. Tylodet, and "The Progressive French Reader," by Frederick Bocher, published by Leypoldt & Holt, are selections of prose and verse, with suitable notes and reefrenoes, arranged to introduce the scholar gradually to the more difficult forms of the Frenoh lan guage by easy progression. Both of these books are well adapted for the purpose in tended, the first-named being especially in tended for beginners. "The Young Pioneers of the Northwest," by Dr. C. II. Pearson, is a story for boys of adventure in the Indian country, which forms the fifth volume of "The Pioneer" se ries. Published by Lee & Shepard. Claxton, Remsen & Haffelfinger send us the following new publications of Harper & Brothers: The Merchant of Venice, edited with notes by William J. Rolfe, A. M., is an attempt to introduce the study of the English classics into our schools by furnishing pupils with correct texts, illustrated by such philological, historical, and antiquarian notes as are neces sary to make clear the meaning of the author. In the play before us the objectionable pas sages have been expunged, but nothing has been added, and the text has been carefully edited from the best modern editions. The notes are sufficiently full and are judicious, giving the pupil all necessary information without obviating for him every difficulty. The illustrations are for the most part worth less for a work of this charaoter, and instead of filling the pages of the book with indiffe rent cuts from some illustrated "Shake speare," it would have been much better if a few accurate illustrations of Venetian anti quities, that would have a positive relation to the text, had been introduced. "The nistoryof Louis XIV," by John S. O. Abbott, is an interesting addition to the popular historical series by the Brothers Abbott. It gives a brief but comprehensive sketch of one of the most remarkable reigns in history a reign that was praotically the prologue to the terrible drama of the French Revolution. "A German Reader," by George F. Com fort, A. M., is designed to saoceed the "Ger man Course" of the Bame author. It is a aeries of selections in prose and verse by the best German writers, arranged progressively, and it 1b designed not only to furnish exer cises for the student, but also to furnish him with an introduction to German literature. "A Syren," by T. Adolphua Trollope, is an interesting novel by a popular writer that will repay perusal. T. B. Peterson &. Brothers send us the following of their recent publications: "Frank Forrester's Sporting Boenes and Characters," two volumes, is a collection of stories and sketches that have had great popularity in times past. The author (the late Henry W. Herbert) was a thorough sportsman and a gruphio writer, and the con tents of the volumes before us will doubtless find a multitude of appreciative readers even at this day. "Doesticks' Letters" is the title of a volume of rough-and-ready humor that found many admirers when it originally appeared Borne fifteen years ago. The quality of Doesticks wit is somewhat strained, but he has his ad mirers, and to such the republication of his book will be welcome. "Hide and Seek" is a new edition of one of the earlier works of Wilkie Collins, which is not so well known as seme of his later writings, but which is marked by other char, acteristios of his style. "Philadelphia Illustrated," puMiahed by L. n. Hamersley & Co., is an excellent de scription of Philadelphia, its numerous points of interest, its great manufacturing establishments, its publio buldings, its schools and colleges, its churches, its bospi- tals, its great park, and the thousand and one items tha. contribute to the greatness of the city. The work is well written, and it gives a great amount of information in a comparatively small spt. v Tbn illustrations sure nuuiervutf unci good, all of tne iuvm pro minent buildings in the city being repre sented. We particularly admire the admi rable view of The Evening- Telegraph office that appears upon page 7, and bear willing testimony to the accuracy with which the artist has represented the architectural adorn ments of this great news centre. The American Exchange and Review for January contains a number of interesting articles on a variety of subjects. DIVIDENDS, ETO. gy- OFFICE!
