TITK DAILY EVENING TELEGRA PI I PiriLADELPIItA, TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, KS7I 5 M I HI CAI, Aft l B U lHl r 1 U. " The Wife" nt t1i Che.nnt. There Is not one of James Sheridan KnoAlcs' dramas tbat docs tot bear the Impress of ponlus, and his best works litre very few superior among the plays that keep possession of the tage. Amonir the bef-t Is the very bountiful drama of The Wife, which was played last cUht, amid much applause, nt the Choanal; for, although it Is not equal to The Hunchback, It possesses remarkable merits and belongs to a elans of works the writing of which almost ap pear to be a lost aft. Knowles' admiration for the El eabcthan dramatists often led him into tbo error of attempting au Imitation of their lite rary styla. Imitations by an immutable law of art are invariably inferior to tholr originals, and the language of Knowles' plays is frequently forced aud marked by such violent Involuton as to make' them exceedingly diffi cult for the actors to s'udy, while sorao of his scenes, particularly his comic ones, are scarcely more than burlesques of Shakespeare's 6tylo. Knowles, however, was a man of real ability, and he was, moreover, a thoroughly conscien tious worker. Ills very faults grow out of an (' earnest desire to produce really good work, aud his plays, with all their faults, are indisputably the best that have been produced during the present century by any English wrltor. The plot of The Wife Is sufficiently removed from the probabilities of every-day llfo to lift It into the region of romance, and as it is poetical in its couceptlon so U it admirable in dramatic treatment. Although not acted as frequently as some other plays, it is deservedly a favorite both with the actors and the public, and when It is well acted it Is most excellent entertain ment. We are pleased at being able to bestow very hearty praise upon the performance of this iilay llat the Chennt last evening. All the leading I characters were well representor!, and the occa sion was made additionally interesting by the appearance of Mrs. E. L. Davenport iu the role of "Mariana." This lady has not played in this city for a numbor of years, but she is well re membered by many of our citizens as an actress of great merit, and she proved conclusively last ' evening that she has during her retirement lost I none of her powers. Her "Marlauv was a 1 chaste, beautiful, and most affecting perform ance. It commenced upon a low key and in creased in intoiislty and force as the drama pro gressed, every scene and every point being ela borated with a fine art that could only proceed from thorough culture as well as great natural abilities. It was imp) essi ye without boiuirdU- figured by aBy straining for mere etlcct, the I ! actress beinff so sure of her Dowers, and her mrtiatt mpHind est trim flint elm wb4 oIiIa in give an air of vivid reality to the different scenes without the apparent consciousness of an effort. Mr. Davenport's personation of "Julian St. Pierre" was also a most admirable plcec of act ing. It was traa to nature and to poetry, aud Ait realized the true eud and aim of high dramatic 1 1 art by making the audience forget the actor in Uthe part he is representing. Mr. Davenport Hand his wife are artists of the same school, and U we say unhesitatingly that It is the best school I with which the public of the present day are VI acquainted, and our play-goers may expect to ee a series of entertainments at the Caesnut I daring the present soasou, with Mr. al Mrs. I Davenport at the head of a company that con C Uins some fine talent, that will most certainly be enjoyed and remembered with pica sure. The other parts in tbi play last evening were for the most part well repre sented, Mr. JThorne giving an earnest and spi rited personation of "Leonards Gonzales," and Mr. Nagle an effective but somewhat exagge rated filling out of the character of "Forrardo Gonzales." This last-named gentleman has flno talents, und he will make a first-rate "heavy" man when he gets rid of a disposition for mere melodramatic acting and acquires a refinement of style' that he does not now possess, and which he cannot acquire better or quicker thuu by taking a few lessons of his manager, than whom no actor upon the stage understands bet ter the distinction between exaggeration and real force. On Friday last a resolu. tioii was introduced in the lower house of the Legislature by Major Pope, of 8t. IaiuIs, en dorsing the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth aiuendnicnls to the Federal Constitution and the policy of the Geueral Government, and favoilng tbe payment of the State and National indebtedness according to several contracts upon which the Indebtedness is basod. Tbe resolution was debated during the morning hour on Friday and tiaturd iy und continued yesterday. It bad' been stated that the resolution was In troduced to force General ltlnlr if posi'ilo to sutuln bis position taken in his ftmoiu Inter to Cclonel Broehtad, in 1803, and upon wb cli he was nominated in the Natioual Democrat J Con vention or to recede from it. Yesterday Gen. Blair, on amotion to refe Major l'opo'e resolution to tbe Committee on Federal delations, of which Blair is chairman, 81ko to the question, stating that be was lu favor of tbe fifteenth amendmeut aud believed the Buth trencrally assented to It, but the reconstruction acts lie declared unconstitutional, and referred to tbe declblou.of tbe Supremo Court in the e.no of Ctimmlngs liealntt tho State of Missouri; aNo to tbe case of Milligan and Bowles, who word tried by a military couimiosiou in Indiana during the war. Referring to his letter to Colonel Brodhcad, he need tbe following language: "Had elr, my letter which has been reforred to tbe contents that the military should be matte to undo their uusrpatious at the South, I say so still, and you have only to withdraw them from tbe South, and their work will be undone. (Applause.) Thut carrion ere of corpct-bnpgers, who are gorged upon the plun der and druBk with the blood of the vanquished people of ll.e South, will disperse themselves in an Instant if rot sustained by the bayonets of the Federal Government. There is no item iu tbat letter that I take buck. I stand by it. "I believe in the construction given to the Con stitution of tbe United States by the Supreme Court, tbat this reconstruction was unconstitu tional. My Lope in going to Congress, if I should attain that high position, is tbat I may aid in withdrawing the troops from those South ern tUates, which are held there to saddle upon the backs of that people a parcel of carpet baggers and scalawags, followed by an igno rant mass of negroes, and if the people ot the South, who have shown a disposition to abide in good faith by the arbitrament of arms, renew their allegiance to the Government, they will be allowed to resume Eelf-srovernmcnt among themselves, as we have done in Missouri, and whilst I may not expect to carry with me the gentleman from St. Louis. I believe that we can surely and certainly count upon tho co operation of tbe large body of liboral men who assisted us in relieving ourselves from a similar tyranny in the State of Missouri." Tbe speech concluded with a rather savage assault npon John B. Ilenderson, a portion of whose career during the early part of tho war is not very delicately handled, lie forgives all past misdeeds of the gentleman, however, for tbo position he took in the impeachment trial of Andy Johnson. err niins. 5tT tub Uknuinr Aktici.k.
