GROWMG OLD. JHm Multhcw Amahrs new volume of Poems in prf m 6.1 Ticknor A l-vUU. ' What is it to grow oll ? Is it to lose the glory of the form, The lustre of the eye T la it for beauty to forego her wreath? Yen, but not this alone. Is it to feel our strength Wot oar bloom only, but onr strength decay f Is it to feel each limb ; Grow Btiffer, every function less exact, Each nerve more weakly strung f Yes, this, and more I but not, Ah, 'tis not what in youth we dreamed 'twould be ! 'Tis not to have our life Mellowed and Boftened as with sunset glow, A golden day's decline I 'Tis not to see the world As from a height, with rapt prophetic eyes, And heart profoundly stirred: And weep, and feel the fulness of the past, The years that are no more f It is to spend long days . And not once feel that we were ever young. It is to add, immured In the hot prison of the present, month To month with weary pain. It is to suffer this, And feel but half, and feebly, what we feel. Deep in our hidden heart Festers the dull remembrance of a change, But no emotion none. It is last stage of ail When we are frozen up within and quite The phantom of ourselves, To hear the world applaud the hollow ghost Which blamed the living man. CITY INTELLIGENCE. ' The Eastbubn Mariners' Church. A meet ing of the members of the congregation of the Eastbnrn Mariners' Chorea was held last even ing in the hall ot the Hope Hose Compuny, Pine street, above Second, for the purpose ot consi dering the practicability of immediately com mencing to build their new church edidce. The meetfuK was called to order at 8 o'clock, when a statement wus made by lie chairman respect ing the object of the call. It appears that the old church property on Water street, below Chesnut, was sold for $20,000, and that the Trustees, by order of the congregation, pur chased a property at the S. W. corner of Union and Front streets, for which they paid $13,600. At the meeting last night tbev were instructed to proceed with the new building, on the site purchased by them, and to collect such funds as may be necessary to enable thera to finish the structure. Itistbeir intention to erect a neat biick church edifice, and to huve it surmounted with a cupola. The buililinp will be so ar ranged as to give accommodation to about seven hundred itersons, and will have lecture and Sunday school rooms. The cost of the new church will be about $18.01)0. Tbe congrega tion now numbers about three hundred persons, under the pastoral eare of tne Kev. Charles II. Ewing. Br.oAD Steeet. An Injunction has been ap plied tor by Mr. M. Bouvier and other property owrers r n Broad street, to retrain tbe city of Philadelphia from continuing the work of lay ing the Nicholson pavement and charging the cost to the property owners. The bill charges that Councils had no authority to pass the oidi nance, as the street was already paved, and the cot once assessed against the property ownerf; that a second paving of the street is unnecessary and illegal.
