0 MM Artiste Fund Society Tbe A nasal Hi bibitlon ot fainting, lite It ll With pleasure we refer to the works or art on exhibition at the Ga.lery of the Society, No. Chesnnt street, opposite the Mint. A meritorious work of art is always an object of t teres t to the cultivated mind, but snore especially to ns when produced b our own towntmon t and &at Philadelphia has cause to be proud ol her natire lent U demonstrated Ly the pictures sow on cx bition. On coloring the Callory, tho eye la attraoted by a Fre marine painting No. 62. 'The Eqnloootlai" 7 James Hamilton. The sk Is both mawlve and rand In effect, lull ot atmoBphore and truth. It la lu'.lfully handlod and one of the finest examples tgrej coloring whoroby Mr. Hamilton has won so noh renown. In a proper light tho effect is truly wonderful. There are threo other large pictures by Mr. Hamilton in the second caliory, ono of whloh yMo. S, "'Shipping on tho rbamos" i also romarka- 1) for ita flue tone and atmosphorio effect. It is trong and rigorous, and in every way worthy of la famo. "Whilst conttmplatlne; Hamilton's first-named loture, a small, unpretending work, tanging IbOitin line, exercises oonsideiable magnetic power vi" mctiaiur, iiv, xi, --onrimpcrs. ii is a beach sc ne at sunset, a small group of figures in the foreground. This little (rem is painted with the tull and flowing pencil of E Moran: and, while It is full ot feeling, and beautiful in color, happily demon strate how little material is requirod to make a plo ore wbon the artist is skilled in nmtnriai hpni phu an eye lor color, and a heart full of foollnir. flnrnlng around, we are aialu conironted with Koran's large picture, Ho. M, "Windmill on Lake Xrte." This picture is remarkable for its breadth ltd rigor, Its delicacy and harmony of color. It is roll Of pictorial beauty, abounding in tender sontt. Kent and loeling. while the cottage and dilapidated mill are inimitable Moran, liko Hamilton, Is repre I On ted in erory room, but his best picture Is in the Second gallery, No 61, "launching tho Lifoboat." In this picture Moran is at home; for ne living artist can tetter depict an angry wave breaking on the boaoh with all the maddening fury of resistless eloments. In the drawing ot water be Is always happy giving to it whatever ol motion, depth, or transparency Is necessary but seldom so happy as on this occa sion. Xhj composition is.as grand as it is original. hi'.e the sentiment it conveys touches the most tender chords of human sympathy; and although, In our Judgment, the group of figures in the loft. And middle distance might poasibly 0 bo Improved by closer realization, tho other parts are so beauti fully rendered that we aro inclined to doubt whether ny other artist would have given us more of per fection, and left ns less to sigh for. 1 On each tide of Moran'a "Windmill," No. El, lhangs a gem, by Falkner, who, weary of the lUmeraid lslo, transplanted himself in our midst 'about a year ago. Noe. 63 and 65 are beautiful peclmous of landscape art. Of the two, we prefer he latter "Sporting on the Dargle" i Ireland). The coloring of these two pictures is very pure and ex cessively brilliant, and every tonch of the brush Indioates the hand of a mattor. They exhibit no Weakness, no trace of indecision, uo groping aronnd for chance effect, but a clear perception of what was desirable andintended, from the first rub in to the finishing touohes. As intimated, we pre lor that hang. ing by the door, it being more replete with pictorial beauty, the foreground painting ot which will chal lenge the admiration ot the most. exacting connois. Bear. Mr. Falkner being still a young man, we prefi'-t for him a bright future, his works embrac ing thoe rare qualities that will surely commend them to posterity. No. 66, ' Glen Achlagh" in tbo (large room is by the samo artist, and is equally Veil handled. It has all the stillness and solemnity fepch localities inspire; great breadth of light and shade, with elaborate drawing and detail. It is m picture of fueling rather than of color or speolal at mospheric effect. To this end, nothing could be more folioitous than the introduction of tho bumble cottage on the right, as in contract with the majestic rural licat'.icr-clad mountains on the left of the pio- "tare, where we are also dollghted with a reflective St i earn meandoring amid Inimitable rocks and boul ders, amid which docks and brackens are struggling for existence ; the whole being a beautiful piece ot realization, In perfect harmony with the genoral sentiment. Ho. 9, "On the Allegheny with Oil Boats," by W. II. Willcox. is well painted. The water in the fore ground is especially pleasing. No. 81, by the same artfct, Is also good. No. 68, "Family Cares," and No. 60, "Apple Wo man," by D. E. Knight, are very clever pictures, well painted, and pleasing in color. No. 59, "In the Woods," by P. Moran, is a fine specimen of animal painting, good in both drawing and color, and the surrounding vegetation well do fined The "Morning Call," in tho same room, and No. 86, ''Noonday Kest," in the second room, both contain passages of ooloring we have seldom soon surpassed, tne latter or which is a little gem, the Jhindqunrtcrs of the l'ony being especially truthfu ana iuii ot vitality, jvo. 71, third room, several studjos of "Sheep," by the samo artist, exhibit both fine talent and fooling, and a trait of charaoW pecu liar to himself, that needs but a little time to mature and develop it. Nos. 68 and 19, "Fruit Pieces," by Milno Bamsay, in which both iruit and wino appear to.be of good quality and excel lout flavor. No. 19, "The Barnyard Family," and No. 21, "Babbits at Lunch," by L. Julliard; excellent pic tures, well painted, and beautiiul in color. No. 22, "Tho Slave" (see cata'ogne), by James Ftrris: good in light and (hade, will drawn, and pleasing iu color. No. 63, "Autumn," by F. DeB. Richards; pleasing ln color. I No. 60, "Winter," by W.T. Richards; a very good No. 67. "Mountain Stream," by G. B. Wood, Jr.; well painted, but not as pleasing as others we have seen by this artist. Nos. 67 and 66, W. E. Winner. Pictures that will no doubt attract attention, and speak for them selves. . Nos. 20 and 87. Portraits by J. B. Waugb, In bis usual st) le of excellence. No. 6. "The Morning Lesson," G. C. Lambdcn. Good iu effect, pleasing in co'or.. and delioatoly bandied. No. 20, "Iho New Kuife," by the same artist, Is par txcel ence, Tainted Ttith a pleasing vein of humor, and true to the life. - No. 7. "Autumn on the Schuylkill," J.L. Wil liams. Well painted, but not very attractive. No. 88. Large mezzotint, by J. Bartaln. A well executed plate. ...... Nos. 89, 40, and 41. Uozzotints, by J, 8artalo. AU Well executed and interesting, .
