this picture Moran is at home; for ne living artist can

'about a year ago. Noe. 63 and 65 are beautiful
peclmous of landscape art. Of the two, we prefer
he latter "Sporting on the Dargle" i Ireland). The
coloring of these two pictures is very pure and ex
cessively brilliant, and every tonch of the brush
Indioates the hand of a mattor. They exhibit no
Weakness, no trace of indecision, uo groping aronnd
for chance effect, but a clear perception of what was
desirable andintended, from the first rub in to the
finishing touohes. As intimated, we pre lor that hang.
ing by the door, it being more replete with pictorial
beauty, the foreground painting ot which will chal
lenge the admiration ot the most. exacting connois.
Bear. Mr. Falkner being still a young man, we
prefi'-t for him a bright future, his works embrac
ing thoe rare qualities that will surely commend
them to posterity. No. 66, ' Glen Achlagh" in tbo
(large room is by the samo artist, and is equally
Veil handled. It has all the stillness and solemnity
fepch localities inspire; great breadth of light and
shade, with elaborate drawing and detail. It is m
picture of fueling rather than of color or speolal at
mospheric effect. To this end, nothing could be
more folioitous than the introduction of tho bumble
cottage on the right, as in contract with the majestic
rural licat'.icr-clad mountains on the left of the pio-
"tare, where we are also dollghted with a reflective
St i earn meandoring amid Inimitable rocks and boul
ders, amid which docks and brackens are struggling
for existence ; the whole being a beautiful piece ot
realization, In perfect harmony with the genoral
sentiment.
Ho. 9, "On the Allegheny with Oil Boats," by W.
II. Willcox. is well painted. The water in the fore
ground is especially pleasing. No. 81, by the same
artfct, Is also good.
No. 68, "Family Cares," and No. 60, "Apple Wo
man," by D. E. Knight, are very clever pictures,
well painted, and pleasing in color.
No. 59, "In the Woods," by P. Moran, is a fine
specimen of animal painting, good in both drawing
and color, and the surrounding vegetation well do
fined The "Morning Call," in tho same room, and
No. 86, ''Noonday Kest," in the second room, both
contain passages of ooloring we have seldom soon
surpassed, tne latter or which is a little gem, the
Jhindqunrtcrs of the l'ony being especially truthfu
ana iuii ot vitality, jvo. 71, third room, several
studjos of "Sheep," by the samo artist, exhibit both
fine talent and fooling, and a trait of charaoW pecu
liar to himself, that needs but a little time to mature
and develop it.
Nos. 68 and 19, "Fruit Pieces," by Milno Bamsay,
in which both iruit and wino appear to.be of good
quality and excel lout flavor.
No. 19, "The Barnyard Family," and No. 21,
"Babbits at Lunch," by L. Julliard; excellent pic
tures, well painted, and beautiiul in color.
No. 22, "Tho Slave" (see cata'ogne), by James
Ftrris: good in light and (hade, will drawn, and
pleasing iu color.
No. 63, "Autumn," by F. DeB. Richards; pleasing
ln color.
I No. 60, "Winter," by W.T. Richards; a very good
No. 67. "Mountain Stream," by G. B. Wood, Jr.;
well painted, but not as pleasing as others we have
seen by this artist.

no doubt attract attention, and speak for them
