The Rochester frcmocrtl gives the following endorsement to tUe local newspaper: We know of 110 im propriety les3 justifiable thau the ceaseless limjijig fault with oue's local paper." There are many thousand "newspapers in the land, but by no means as many as Unue "be htcj* hciifc- The press Is a rccognlzevl necessity. The damp, fresh sheet laid daily or weekly at your doors, gives-yon the world in miniature. You lead its comely "column, and feel the pulsa tions of ibo mighty ms§ of human ity, and become enrajtj'ort with all its movements. Some people are all too proue to depreciate limit own local uewspapers and magnify the r merits of ouf-of-towu newspapers." As a rule the local newspaiKT is as good a paper as the couiniuuity in which it u published will support. Occasionally we find cities and vil lages which are not properly taken care of Ly their papers, but in this day cLuerce competition, there are always those standing ready with the requisite biuins and capital to (ill "wants long felt," and if people will subscribe and pay for a good paper, they can always be accommo dated with a prime article. We do not respect a person who either him self speaks or permits others to speak slightingly of a local newspaper. Citizens have a certain obligation In tbi!? matter as well as publishers. It is their duty to be loyal to the prow. and to sustain it in all that it does which Is not prejudicial to the best interests of the community. There is scarcely a city in New York State that has not excellent newspapers, and those communities which best sustain a local newspa per by advertising and subscriptions, as a rule, have the most enterprising and reliable papers. Perhaps there is no part of the" continent better provided with newspapers tba! Western New York. Besides the dailies of Rochester, Buffalo, Lock port Elmira, Bingham ton and Au burn, —all of them of more than or dinary mcfcjLL and some of them without superiors any where— what bettef toirW. ef-'Hlted," better patronized weeklies can anywhere be fondd than are published in the State in general and iis western wing in particular ? .Our people read much, tiiey Irave excellent dis crimination ; their standard of a good newspaper is high and all things considered thev have no suf ficient cause of complaint that their desires are not faithfully responded to by publishers. "The survival of the iitfesv' obtains in newspapei s as in the development of species, and evry town end city will have just such papers as it is willing and given un opportunity to pay for. Kocorruge publishers by your pat ronage—not as a charity, dear sir, fur you always get more thau you give,—always speak a good word for your pipers, and you wilt riever have yourselves to blame if the local press dors not meet yonr expecta tions and desires. U££ LY KiUZib. Those who sigh for a ljdge in Brazil shoull read what Mr. Bigg Withers writes cf the beauties of that country : "The mosquito makes his home in these wilds. A tiny fly, called polvora, from being so small and multitudious as atoms of dust, passes through the meshes oj tire tiuest not, their penetrates hair and beard, and sticks its venom ous probofis into the skin. The loath some tick named ca rapetto, when disturbed on the cones and twigs by the foot of the passer-by, swarms up the trowscrs* legs and fastens upon the flesh. It is so ttrtn a bite that if it is plucked off its head is Lft hur led deep in the fl:sh, diffusing a virulent poison of its own. Those parents who believe that they have done all they can for their sons by giving them a libiral school education, makd one of the most distressing mistakes tb'kt af tiicts modern .society and business cTrc??§. No class cf young men in city or country is so deserving of plft as those who have a good edu cation, good morals, but. no pradt i cal knowledge of the solid business affairs of life. They arc deserving uf pity Wcause th v are really de serving of a bettrer posULoii in life than their capabilities wtll warrant, and because they nre not to blame for leing unfitted for responsible positions. Thousands of well edu cated young men walk the streets of the cities, even in the flush of pros perous times, who do not earn their livelihood, and go seeking tiny after day such positions as they belfexe their taionts demand, and meet with disappointment at every turn. It is a noteworthy fact that nearly, if not quite, all of the great, good and substantial business men of our country havo come up from boy hood familiar with the use of the axe, plow, forge or plane ; and they are not now, nor have they ever been ashamed to own that their hands have been hardened witli toil. Labor is a great gift; it is a promot er of health, and hence of happiness and ©i osperity. No young man is without the means of success who is j willing to work. Let him secure an education adapted to the practic al affairs of life and with his habits of industry and perseverance, suc cess will be certain, no matter b >\v many obstacles uaay have beset his early career. " ■ i BOYS RVX HAD. That in a single month at least fif teen boys have run away from com fortable homes in dill-rent parts of the country to seek adventures is a pretty serious fact, says an exchange, i That nearly all these boys have pre faced their flight by robbing their parents is a very serious fact. Yet these are only the first fruits from the evil seed that is being scattered daily and weekly all over the coun try iu flashy dime novels and fl ish ier illustrated story pipe s The three Brooklyn lads who ran away a while ago, one of them stealing $12") from his father, had bad their heads turned by these publications. So had the four Illinois lads, the oldest not 17, who, in a letter left for their parents, announced I that they had gone to Kansas to "scalp Indians so had the two lowa boys who stole away down the river, in a skiff, per haps with the purpose of rivaling or surpassing the exploits of the "B >y Pirat);" so had the interesting Oconoinowoc youth, aged 14, wl o stole enough money to buy four re volveis, and then left liis pleasant "Wisconsin home to become u "Tex as xanger." These are only average sample cases, not the worst by any ] means. In several recent instances, ! pricked on by ambition to equal the j brilliant feats of the "Boy Burglar," i school children hardly in their teens ■ have set up as housebreakers ; iu at least one instance, at St. Louis, they have turned their attention to highway robbery. We repeat, this i is a serious couditiou of thiugs ; and | it is becoming more serious all the 1 while, because the infection of these poisonous publications is steadily ' spreading. It is high time for par ents to be inquiring whether there is not some effectual means of Checking it. ASH in TO ASHES.
