U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA) recently conducted two meetings with Pennsylvania dairy farmers to discuss the senator’s proposed dairy legislation, The Na tional Dairy Equity Act. For many of the farm ers, this trip was their first to the nation’s capital and the first time they were asked to give input on legislation affecting their industry. Twenty four dairy farmers attended the meetings on Tuesday and Thursday in the Senator’s Wash ington office. Senator Specter’s proposed legislation would help stabilize the price of milk and support the income of dairy farmers through an over-order price system, which would require a minimum price to be paid to eligible producers. The legis lation would also include provisions that take into consideration of the cost of production, in cluding the price of feed, and cost of labor, ma chinery expenses, and other cash expenses such as hauling and veterinary services. In addition to this legislation, Senator Specter was also original co-sponsor of 5.154, the Emer gency Agricultural Disaster Assistance Act of 2003, which would require that the same tariff rate quotas currently assessed on related dairy products Jcheeses and skim milk powder) be ap plied to Milk Protein Concentrates (MPC) and casein used in the food and animal feed indus tries. In 2003, Senator Specter authored several letters urging USDA to reconsider their deci sions on the sale of butter, purchase prices for dairy products, and the consideration of the re gional costs of feed, feed availability, or other re gion-specific economic factors. Specter plans to use the input from these meetings in the final drafting of the bil. “Having the support of Pennsylvania dairy farmers is very important to this legislation,” said Senator specter after the meeting. “It is im perative to the state’s economy and the liveli hood of Pennsylvania farmers that we correct the disparities over milk pricing while taking into consideration factors like the cost of pro duction. Agriculture is a major industry in Pennsylvania and I will continue my fight to im prove the lives of farmers across the state.” Aqua-Therm Outside Wood Burning Furnace - Clean f - Easy - Safe - Efficient Buy the top of the line!
