8112-iancaster Farming, Saturday, August 11, 2001 Lancaster 4-H Competition Kicks Off County Fairs LOU ANN GOOD Food And Family Features Editor QUARRYVILLE (Uncaster Co.) Almost 200 4-H’ers en tered projects in the Uncaster County 4-H Fair, which kicked off the fair season in Uncaster County last week. The 3-day show included live stock, general projects, exhibits, and numerous entertainment ac tivities for visitors, 4-H members, and their families. In the livestock barns, breeding sheep included entries in the Cheviot, Corriedale, Dorset, Hampshire, Oxford, Shropshire, Southdown, Suffolk, Texel, and Natural Colored breeds. Kelsey Binkley’s Dorset ewe captured grand champion honors overall breeds. Katrina Frey, Quarryville, showed the grand champion Suffolk and claimed the best bred and owned champi on. Katrina, 11, said the champion was bred from a ewe that has been twice named Suffolk cham pion in the junior show at the state farm show. Named Valen tine, the ram lamb is part of Ka trina’s grandmother’s show string for Breezeview Farm, Atg len. In market lamb competition, Tiffany Dean, Strasburg, and her lamb Sweet Pea captured the top spot. Making it even a sweeter victory was the fact that Sweet Pea was bred and owned and was the half brother of the champion market lamb at last year’s Lam peter Fair. Tiffany said she races Sweet Pea daily to condition her. This was the third time Tiffany claimed a championship at the Lancaster County 4-H Fair. Running a close second to Sweet Pea and attaining reserve champion market lamb status was Stealth, a Suffolk-cross showned by Ryan Donough, Manheim. The Donoughs have about 25 market lambs and com pete in about seven shows annu ally. John Eaton, judge for the event, said length and muscle were the determining factor for his choice. “You start with good genetics but you must work with it,” Eaton said of attaining a trim, firm champion. As a former 4-H’er, Fuller said the money he made selling champions enabled him as a 16-year-old to buy an acre of land. Now a Quarryville dairy farmer, Fuller takes a spe cial interest in helping young members get a start by buy ing a sale animal and donating it back to a 4-H’er. Fuller said, “Somebody has to help. Kids today can’t do it (buy a farm) on their own.” Tiffany Dean’s Sweet Pea captures champion market lamb at the Lancaster County 4-H Fair and Ryan Do nough’s Stealth was selected reserve champion market lamb by John Eaton, judge, center.
