Western 4-H Dairy Club The Western 4-H Dairy Club from Franklin County took third place honors in the 4-H Club Di vision in the 71st annual Hoard’s Dairyman Cow Judging Contest. A total of 660 4-H clubs from across the U.S. and from several other countries competed in the contest. Volunteer adult leaders of the club, which is located in the Mercersburg area, are Robert Eckstine, Jamie Hartman and Maryanne Bohn. Receiving honorable mention in the junior division were Tobin and Emily Stuff, Mercersburg. There were 25, 416 entries in the junior competition. In the Fashion Revue, there were six senior participants and 11 junior participants. These youth modeled the outfits that they had worked on throughout the year for their parents and the judges. The results of the fashion con test were: Senior blue ribbon win ners Melissa Becker, Maria Bodenschatz, Brittany Sossong, Tisha Stefanik, and Malena Yab linsky; Senior red ribbon winner Sarah Henson; Junior blue rib bon winners Emma Bard, Kaitlyn Bartek, Marah Christina, Britney Fogle, Laura Kirby, Erin Knarr, Josh Makin, Rosalie Sos song, Alison Temdrup, Wendy Wall, and Katie White. Theresa Penatzer served as emcee. The senior participants receiving blue ribbons were given the chance to compete at the re gional level. In the county 4-H foods con test, there were five senior and 10 junior participants. The partici pants were evaluated on their skills in spice identification, safe ty, and cleanliness. After the contest, there was a candy demonstration by Mid’s Candy, and Bridget Farabaugh served ice cream for dairy promotion. York County 4-H Fair The 2001 York County 4-H Fair, sponsored by the York County cooperative extension of fice, will be conducted Friday, Aug. 10, and Saturday, Aug. 11, at the 4-H Center near Bair Sta tion. York County 4-H members have been busy completing the more than 800 projects that will be entered into the fair. Friday will feature the 4-H Olympic competition with teams competing in various events such as relays, balloon toss, obstacle course, spider web, and brain games. You can also watch the model horse show, check out the goats at the goat show, or see if you are up to some “Country Challenges.” In addition, there will be cake and watermelon walks and a Tug of War. Saturday features the beef, rabbit, and lamb shows; more cake and watermelon walks, more “Country Challenges,” and a pet parade. Take time to blow bubbles, have your face painted or visit with the clowns. The 4-H poultry club will showcase the huge variety of poultry they raise everything from emus to peacocks. The last meeting of the Cum berland County 4-H Dairy Club took place July 9. Under old business, any mem ber that participated in Speak Out Night told what type of pre sentation they gave. Under new business, the club is having a food stand at the South Central Championship Show at the Ship pensburg Fairgrounds on Aug. 11. As a reminder, the Showman ship Contest is Sept. 23 and Sept. 24 is the State Junior Dairy Show with the Judging Forum Sept. 25. Members were reminded that all books must be completed to show at the Roundup and Mrs. Kathy Walton gave the club a checklist of things needed for a show. Demonstrations followed by Brian Nailor, a life cycle of a fly; Michael Woods, round bale safe ty; Amy Kulick, how a cow di gests food; and Michelle Ocker, what it takes to get a cow ready for a show; and Kristen MCauley told about osteoporosis. The program, “Goats Are Dairy Too!” featured Zach Tra vis and his parents speaking about their goats. The next meeting will be con ducted on Sept. 9 at Mr. and Mrs. Yorlet’s farm.
